I know this is a longer video than usual, let me know in the comments if you like the longer format.
Thanks for watching! As always, stay tuned for more boatbuilding content!

Hey thanks a lot to post your videos, really enjoyed it Any chance to try it on the water again Solve the no plane issue? 8:17
Thanks for watching! I'm working on replacing the floor in this boat now. We'll have it on the water again!
@@bensboats I’ll follow for sure 😎

What fiberglass/resin did you use? And where did you get it
For the transom, I primarily used 1708 bi-axial mat and West Systems hardener and resin. Where strength was of a lesser concern (bilge floors, etc) chopped strand mat was used.
I would Suggest Getting A Compression Gauge And Check Each Cylinder I Think It Should Be Over 150 Psi On Each Cylinder
Thanks for the tip!
Came across you channel, tip never run the motor without the water attached to the unit….. you might wanna order replacement parts for the lower end propeller, etc., etc. change all the oils and before you tried to crank it you should’ve pulled the spark plugs and put oil down all the cylinders excellent way to bend that to the cylinder wall, looking forward to the videos.
If it's an aq270 out drive the gasket in the stern drive is probably dried out
Great swap.
Beautiful boat and finding a deal like this is great. Subscribed
For $500. I would have bought that boat all day long. Nice BOAT...😊
We run 30wt non detergent oil in the trim pumps rather than Trans fluid. Purge the system and take the time to get the old stuff out. Good luck. They don't like sitting for 1 there are other issues that occur once the change was done it's had zero issues I picked mine up after it had sat for 15 years. That was 3 years ago and has worked flawlessly since changing to old school Dino oil. Good luck!
Thanks for sharing!
Dude! Get a break bar on that crank bolt! You’re only using a 3/8 rachet!
Don't want to break that bolt! Makes for a real bad day....
@@bensboats I get that, but you can also break the starter bolts out of the bolt using the starter to crank a locked up engine
I bought a boat one time had the same problem. Do you know what it turned out to be the outdrive was locked up which ties in with a couple ties in with the motor and will not allow the motor to turn over
That can happen! Luckily this drive seems ok
I worked for Mercruiser in Stillwater, love seeing an engine and drive that came out of the plant! I always wonder when I see a boat in the year range I worked there if I had my hands on that motor at one point. In the cafeteria we had the engine covers from over the years on the walls being used at light shades, it was pretty cool.
That's awesome! Thanks for sharing
Ben, you’re one of my favorite creators. Looks like a solid build there. Don’t forget to scope the manifolds!
Thank you! Its a good boat that for sure. Lake test coming soon!
16:09 why not use a router if you dont have a jig?
are you gonna put a wake tower on it?
Nope! It has a fly High bar, close enough
been longing to work on my boat for almost 2 months now but cant since the vehicle i use for towing is needs a bunch of work done.. this video helps me cope a bit better with these boat withdrawals im facing! thanks for this video (and the previous one!)
Glad you enjoy the content!
Cool video. Keep up the great work. Much love to ya from Maryland❤❤❤
Might check the exhaust manifolds as well, they will sometimes crack internally and allow water into the exhaust and cylinders. Just a thought.
Thanks for the tip!
Who cracked it ? I bought a 2004 boat where PO had cracked the 4.3 , only 37 hrs on engine ruined it.
Improper winterization caused the cracking. Always a sad way to go
Its appreciated! Please keep up the good work and excellent production.
Thanks!
Great video, keep up the good work
Thats some good work 👍🏻 Make me miss my old Nautique seeing your boat.
Looks like a good start! Hope it comes together for you. I tend to run the engine on blocks before I install. Much easier to fix small leaks or alignment things outside the boat than inside.
Good point! I think it should be ok. Lake test coming soon!
This is impressive. So are you a mechanic full time?
Thanks! I'm not a mechanic full time, hopefully one day I'll spend more time fixing boats and making videos. For now it's just a hobby alongside my day job!
Every time he starts these boats not hooked to water; I die a little inside 😢
Great video, Ben. That is a nice boat. I have been looking for a Cobalt boat like yours. Do you still have the boat?
Thanks! I still have this boat, working on the floor replacement now. Other projects took priority but I'm working on it!
@@bensboats That’s cool. I am looking for a good bow rider boat for my family to use. I have about a 2K budget.
did you turn it over to fill the oil filter before you checked the dipstick?
It needs carb work!!
If the block has JB in it, really doesn’t matter if the engine spins. Good content, enjoying it 👍🏼
Ben, great video. Question for you on fiberglassing the hole in transom. Why did you not overlap the fiberglass onto the hull, instead just did circle patches? I would think the patches would be stronger with overlap, although certainly less pretty.
Yes, REALLY need to overlap fiberglass repairs.
problem with all bayliners is they used green wood when they were built. the stringers are probably dryrotted. seen more than one over the years spin the engine over and go thru the bottom of the hull. sink pretty fast , the green wood drys out and there is a separation of the fiberglass they put over the engine mounts. wish you luck with it
Caleld quadra junks for a reason... REgardless, there is a tension screw in the underside of the shaft for the secondary, how you slow down the opening of the second butterflies. They get wear and loosen up, and create the quadrajunk bog....
great video! cant wait to see the rest of your videos on this boat.
Just sold my 1982 CS7 and thus is making me miss it already! I’ve got a 19BR cobalt you need to fix up like this one
Hey man not sure if it’s you or affiliated but there’s a TikTok account speeding up your vids and reposting them with some slight editing monetized too just a heads up love the content figured I’d find the source lol
Thanks for sharing! I'm not on TikTok.... could you possibly send the link and I'll check it out?
Pull the pump out of the hold and dump out all of the old fluid. When it sits the fluid can turn to thick snot like clumps and the pump can't move thru the system. Hopefully it didn't get in the rams or you have to pull them apart.
That's a good tip. I'll try this out, thanks!
Great Video ! I just bought a 1982 Bayliner 2270 Explorer because it was all I could afford and I liked the way it looks . You got a great boat ! The last year of the Orin Edson Bayliners . The history of Bayliner is very interesting with it's beginnings in hydroplanes . They knew how to make a great hull and had all the fiberglass delivered right to the factories by railroad cars so they had all they wanted . When Orin Edson sold the company in 1986 Bayliner was the worlds largest recreational boat manufactuer . Can't wait to see you open that up on the water . Looks like a very fast skater . The Bayliner Capri was the first boat sold as a boat , motor & trailer package . It was also the National Marine Manufactuers Association BOAT OF THE YEAR the year it came out as a complete package . Just like the Bass Pro Bass Tracker , boat motor trailer package . Have you noticed how they say CLASSIC right on the sides of those ? yeah, I like my Bayliner ! Great Video I'll watch more .
Thanks for the history! That's very neat to hear
Just did this on a 1998 Maxum. Got a great deal, great interior, scuff from docks on the gel coat, frozen motor. Built another 350 for it and got it on the water. Looking forward to see how you tackle this.
Parts are ordered!
wow, the interrior is perfect for its age!
It's in great shape!
Nice work!
You are a great teacher. Enjoying these vids greatly for the learning.
Thanks!
That sound is more than likely the pds bearings. You have to pull the motor to replace them. One comes out the back and one out the front. I always replace with sealed bearings.
Great find. Should keep you on the water for quite a while.
that is one good lookin boat would love to see this done on a budget!
Long block going in soon!
Really nice boat !!
Sure is! Looking forward to getting her back on the water
Great video! Can’t wait to see it on the water !
Coming soon!
In the first video, you showed of the trim in operation, It looked like they were operating against each other. I suspect one side of the hydrolic lines are put on backwards.
A question not related to this project - why use petrol karcher? In a mobile cleaning that makes sense, but since you are washing in your driveway and using the hose from the water supply, why not to use electric one? Maybe the video didn't catch it right but the spray seems weaker than from an electric k5-k7 models.
Yeahhhhh its not a great pressure washer, but it gets the job done!
