inked happiness
India
Приєднався 3 сер 2020
I have always rued the lack of a forum for us aficionados. A place where we can exchange notes,
share stories about the all-consuming love affair of our lives, discuss our penchant for pens, our
inklings and more. This is just the first faltering step towards that inking.
Even without restricting our choice, putting on blinders of Nationality as it were, I would like to put
stress on India crafted fountain pens - just a shade and no more. We do have a rich legacy to live up
to and I feel, our pens will not write about us kindly if we fail to tell their tales to the children of
tomorrow.
And accessories - the papers to write on, the inks in all the shades of sin, the little notebooks that
hold our deepest secrets and are such a pleasure to behold, the pen cases, the pillows for our
companions to rest - wont it be a great idea to bring the best from around the world to give the
flesh of my flesh, the blood of my blood all the little comforts that money can buy?

A day in the life of a fountain pen collector
No, it is not easy being a collector of fountain pens. Sooner or later, one outgrows the fascination of walking into a brick-and-mortar store, or going online to buy the shiny new pens and then the travails begin. Even if one were to discount the mental exertion of living and breathing pens, the act of scouting for, acquiring, identifying, and maintaining these works of art that are a throwback on times past, is, shall we say pen-staking?
I don’t know about the others, but this is what a typical day in my life looks like.
Pick up the pen and chart the day
The first thing that I do in the morning is pick up a fountain pen to write down the things that is propose to accomplish during the day. Not that I end up achieving all that I write, with most of the tasks getting carried over to the next day, but the very pleasure of beginning the lost in thought with a pen in hand, is pleasure incarnate.
Check out the latest acquisition
I also reserve the early morning to go through my latest acquisitions. I somehow believe that a fresh mind is most receptive to enjoying the craftsmanship and elan of the old pens that I crave. The cool morning, before the rat race engulfs the world around me helps me concentrate better. They also allow me to take a step back in time, to try and relive the times that the pen in the hand is representative of.
Travel plans for the next pen show
Pen shows are undoubtedly a big thing in the life of any serious collector and I am no exception. And believe you me, the argument that we constantly have with ourselves is whether to scratch the bottom of the barrel (no pun intended) to visit a show, or use the money to acquire another pen. But planning to visit one takes time, and networking and full dedication. Let us not even get into the travails of organising one.
Answer queries / talk to new converts
When one has spent a few decades nurturing the hobby, one must also bear the responsibility of being a guide to young converts. Eager as they are, they have ink-well full of questions and one must answer them to the best of one’s knowledge and abilities. It takes time, but it is a sheer delight. For one, the enthusiasm that is displayed is infectious, and two, because so often, these conversations end up enlightening one. And fountain pen trivia is what we thrive on.
Visit the friendly, neighborhood pen shop
We all have the friendly neighborhood fountain pen shop, don’t we? The one place where we can spend hours at an end rummaging through everything? Who knows, the grail pen may just be bundled carelessly in some unforgotten cupboard? Besides, we are all crestfallen by the thought of the one that got away, perhaps picked up by a fellow collector before we could make the pilgrimage. And yes, this also includes clicking through the websites of our choice, looking for gems.
The joy of finding a rare pen
And then there is the joy of finding a rare pen. One that warms the cockles of one’s heart. I am listing this one separately as many in our circle of family and friends have been the hapless targets who have been bored silly as we have recounted our adventures leading to these acquisitions.
Clean old pens
The afternoons are mostly spent mending, cleaning, and polishing old pens. The hobby is not merely about hoarding. In fact, it is more about caring and therefore needs a huge amount of time and attention to maintain the collection in a pristine condition, enough to fill the heart with pride. And no. My collection is not meant to induce envy in others. They are mine and mine alone to swoon over.
Doodle / jot down stray thoughts
And this I do throughout the day. I doodle and sketch and write down the stray thoughts that cross my mind. And of, yes. I always carry a fountain pen and a notebook. No, I do not scroll through my phone. I write instead. And often, when my mind goes totally blank, I revisit my Notebook for inspiration. Sometimes they throw up real gems. At the least, they bring the smiles back.
Meeting with Dealers and fellow pilgrims
Meeting fellow collectors is another important part of the journey called collecting. They are often an invaluable source of information, apart from being like-minded individuals who mostly help overcome the ennui, leading one to of good times well spent. I will also include the dealers in this segment as oftentimes these wise men come bearing gifts - treasures from the past that go to enrich the collection and the sense of accomplishment.
More Meetings
I am associated with various initiatives to popularise the fountain pen and inks. I visit educational institutions regularly and give talks that introduce the art of handwriting to the young. I also have to talk to the media to answer their queries about the advantages of using fountain pens and how they offer the most sustainable writing option. Often, manufacturers 0 both from India and abroad want my opinion about new launches, which too takes some time.

Lusting after Lamy?
Переглядів 3,7 тис.День тому
Lusting for Lamy? LAMY. The very name evokes emotions that are extreme to put things mildly. The LAMY Safari, on the one extreme of their repertoire, is among the most copied designs in the world of fountain pens. On the other is the defining LAMY 2k, an ode of the Bau Haus, a serious contender for the GOAT title among fountain pens. Lamy pens, embodying everything that German engineering is ce...

Today we talk about a Benu Pen. An eye candy, that is intoxicating to boot, Now Benu, as we all know, is a hyper-creative brand that is now based out of Armenia. Collecting ink bottles?
Переглядів 586Місяць тому
How about ink bottles for a change? wanted to share with you pictures of some Sulekha ink bottles that were literally dug up from the backyard of a gentleman's house, who knowing my interest in all things fountain pen and ink was kind enough to hand them over to me. Yeah, i know that some of you think it to be junk shards of glass, but then again... think about it this way. Sulekha was locked o...
Gama - big things come in small packages!

The Gama Mini is a pocket Hercules. It has all the characters of typical Gama superstars like the Gama Jumbo and the Gama Masterpiece for example, at a fraction of their size without compromising the ability to write miles without even the hint of a murmur. I got the pen when I last went to Chennai to pay my respects to Pratap Kumar, the ever affable and undisputed Mutalāḷi (boss) of the founta...
How do you like these Bamboo pens?
Переглядів 851Місяць тому
There is a Kolkata based company, specialising in Bamboo and other plant-based products that is pestering me to find out if there will be a market for the fountain pen and pencils that they propose to produce using bamboo as the primary raw material. To cap it, such pens will also create job opportunities for marginal craft persons. Now on paper, it all sounds very good as such pens will be sus...

The ink was writ...
Sacrilege

We spend lifetimes painstakingly creating our pens, inks, and accessories collection. And then we pass on, leaving our life’s work to be preyed upon by vultures. Some surmise that it is inevitable - that it is nature’s way of telling us that life must go on. That, from such chaos, after all, the cosmos is created, and our pens finally make way to loving, caring hands. That raddiwallas, and deal...

Sulekha turns 90 On November 5th, Sulekha turned 90. However, as the Sulekha family was still in grief, mourning the passing of one of the ablest sons of the land - scholar and fountain pen aficionado extraordinaire Dr Bibek Debroy, official celebrations were done away with. Instead, a small get-together was held in the factory premises, where a handful of collectors: members of the Sulekha fam...

Goldleaf Jinhao 992 & Crewtone 20634 for Suman Suman has been writing to me for a long time now with a list of pens that she wants to acquire, wishing that I feature the same here so that she may decide which ones to pick up. Paying heed to her desire, I have featured two pens here that I specifically bought for shooting this video from Amazon. But before I ramble off, a rider. No two fountain ...

Sailor Tuzu Check out this fountain pen, for I believe its introduction marks another defining moment in the history of pen-making. But before I get into the specifics, to get the context, let us talk about Sailor of Japan. Two brothers started “Sakata-Manufactory” in 1911 to produce solid gold nibs. In 1917 the factory relocated to Hamadacho and the Company changed the name to “Sailor Pen Saka...
