Wyrd or Weard (weird) is cognate to dutch Waard (wierd) what means something like side or flank. For example 'uiter-waarden' is the outer-banks of a river at both sides ; the low land that drowns when the water-level is high. Waard also means polder and inn-keeper ; the person that is standby (aside) and keeps an eye , a warden or guard. Boomgaard is tree-garden what is aside or flanks a building. Vergaren is to collect or gather, for instance some watchmen (a posse or guard). Waarde is the worth of something compared (side by side) with a standard value. A sword is litterally something to carry at your side. Wierd is also a frisian first name meaning compagnion , friend, someone to trust. The shield at each side of a sail-boat is also called 'zwaard' = sword. zwaar = heavy/weary, waar = true, waren = wares, commodities. Merkwaardiig = mark-worthy/notable/aware-able . word = note/name . weird is something additional, shit what comes along. worden = to become, to generate, to create/shape the main thing. Woerd is the male-duck additional/siding with the hen. Zwoerd = the rind of a piece of bacon. wearing clothes = been added/provided with clothes. Waardering = valuation, appreciation.

Yes our ancestors practiced it, but it ultimately serves nobody. Paganism in general seems to be an aesthetic choice for people who want a spiritual life but hate Christianity. Christianity, which, by the way, the Angleseaxebearn converted to upon realizing its superiority. The namesake of my hometown, St. Albans, perfectly demonstrates this.

Very interesting video. My only criticism is that the phrase "in spite of all evidence to the contrary" regarding belief in the existence of the spirit beyond death implies a materialistic bias that suggests that there actually is evidence to the contrary, which there is not. It's a physically untestable hypothesis with plenty of phenomenological evidence.

Any thoughts? The Old Norse word "wyrd" is indeed feminine, and its concept shares similarities with the Holy Spirit, Brahman, and Tao. Wyrd represents fate, destiny, or the web of life, often personified as a goddess. Similarities with other concepts: 1. Holy Spirit (Christianity): Like Wyrd, the Holy Spirit is often depicted as a feminine, nurturing force, guiding and connecting all things. 2. Brahman (Hinduism): Brahman, the ultimate reality, is sometimes represented as a feminine, all-encompassing essence, similar to Wyrd's web of life. 3. Tao (Taoism): The Tao, the fundamental principle of the universe, is often described as a feminine, receptive, and nurturing force, akin to Wyrd's concept. Common themes among these concepts: 1. Interconnectedness: All things are connected and part of a larger whole. 2. Feminine principle: Emphasis on receptive, nurturing, and guiding qualities. 3. Transcendence: Beyond human comprehension, yet immanent in the world. 4. Holism: Encompassing all aspects of existence, from fate to the cosmos. The Norse people may have seen Wyrd as a powerful, feminine force, shaping destiny and connecting all things. This perspective resonates with the ideas of the Holy Spirit, Brahman, and Tao, highlighting the common human quest to understand the mysteries of existence and our place within the larger web of life.

Weird enough a dutch woerd is an english drake (masculine duck), the dragon/bull (horn-bearer), twin-horned snake (Ullr /eel) is to compare with hebrew/greek EL/chronos. When Chronos was castrated and became revived He was feminized as Living Earth (Gea). Odin cuts the primordial snake into pieces and shapes the universe. Similar Michael wages war on the old Dragon.

Ƿes hal. Loved the vid, mate! As the camera panned across that ancient landscape, I could not but help wonder about the countless stories that have unfolded there, the battles, the love affairs, the celebrations, the births, the deaths, the unconsolable grief, the tired, prickly, skin scratching satisfaction that comes with the knowledge that the last of the thatching to the new hus has been completed, that quiet moment when the herder stands in awe of the dying rays of Sunne lighting up the distant jagged ridgeline, as though a gold crown, against the heavy grey clouds an approaching mid summer's storm. We may have forgotten, but the land and the Gods remember still. Be well.

I’m Germanic. Purebred Anglo Saxon. But there is a lot of historical misinformation that springs many neo-pagan assumptions such as Christianity was spread through oppression and bloodshed, or Christians stole the temples and taxed the pagans and many more modern biases which frequently pop up. The truth is, our Anglo Saxon ancestors were wise people, they didn’t get fooled into anything, there wasn’t any hidden conspiracy between Christianity and Roman Imperial domination. Many, if not most, of our Anglo Saxon ancestors were proud of their Roman cultural past. We adored it so much, we tried to restart the Roman Empire as holy. Also, missionaries didn’t just show up and tell them what to believe, the pagans realized that this Christ figure was a lot more powerful than their pagan gods. And it would not be fair to say ‘their’ gods. It was more like the gods and ‘their’ people. And it often was not a happy marriage. The gods were often abusive and cruel. And they weren’t trustworthy. And the new God Jesus showed up and the ole pagan gods went missing in action. Whether binded by missionaries and their prayers or the people outgrew their ancient superstitutions.

The "conversion" to Christianity started as a bid to increase trading and bartering campaigns in the southeast. You say bloodshed was seldom used yet there were the Baltic Crusades and Donnars Oak, or the Saxon genocide sponsored by Boniface. The HRE and Charlemagne murdered thousands of their European brothers in the name of a foreign magic-man. The Jerusalem Crusades wasted many more European lives over a worthless plot of sand.

I highly like this film, and thank you for coming back to us, it is truly great. My only gripe with this is some the latter-day English wendings from the old English words. I know not all of them have not all been kept up until now, but I can see a few words that I think should be sundry to how they were wended. As a forebizen, within Ùr rune poem, at the bottom anyway, it reads modiġ wuht, and although I can understand brave creature being wielded as the wending of those words, it should rather be moody wight. Anyway, I am sorry to bring the mood down, I do love this film, believe me, and thank you for coming back, please keep making great things like this.
