I'm celebrating Tom Baker's 50-year Golden Anniversary as the iconic Time Lord of Gallifrey, Doctor Who. Widely regarded as the best and most famous Doctor, Tom Baker assumed the role from 1974-1981, making him the character's longest-portraying actor!

A Follow-up on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds S2|E8 - "Under the Cloak of War"

Some further considerations on "Under the Cloak of War," Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' second season eighth episode. This was a good offering by the SNW writers and will be one I rewatch again in the future because of its efforts at subtlety and nuance concerning war and PTSD.

For the first time in two seasons of this program, I am actually reasonably impressed with an episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Season two, episode eight, "Under the Cloak of War," tries to tackle the lingering effects of the Klingon War on Starfleet combat veterans. Let's delve into why I found this one of the better episodes of SNW with this video.

The young lady that passed will surely be missed. I wish I knew more about her and I will. But Mr Todd, I’ve always been a huge fan especially his portrayal of Kern. His intensity and fine details made that character truly an intimidating and fiercely loyal and passionate Klingon. As much as I love Worf and his dedication to his captain and crew, I think if I had the chance in the trek universe or in real life, I would want Kern as a brother, a comrade, or even a friend. He was the type of man that had your back always. Even if he knew you were wrong and he faced terrible consequences, Kern would fight for you to the death! Tony Todd, you will be truly missed. I feel and did grow up watching him and despite the fact that it was fictional, he really had an impact on my life and his Kern character helped shape the way that I view family and friends. So, I religiously watched this as a kid recording every episode on VHS except two because of power outages erasing all the recorder time settings. My jaw absolutely dropped seeing this one. It's too five for me at worst. I've seen it so many times I can almost remember all the dialogue. I love it when Sisko hits someone too. And Garak, if you read the books about the post Dominion Cardassia, he is such a dynamic character. Like all of them, but he's the MOST dynamic hands down. From the illegitimate son of a spy and his maid. Protege spy licensed to kill, exiled (possibly for being bisexual in a very strict dystopian family centric empire in denial) Al the way to being Castellan of a free Cardassia and signer of Federation Membership Accords. Take a look, it's in a book......... There were some interesting war parallels that really hit home. Bajor was similar to one of the former Soviet states, the Dominion was like an antifederation like us, but not like us. And the daily death reports were really high. The US hadn't seen those kinds of numbers since the Civil war. There were a total of 250 Allied losses in Operation Desert Storm. This is the first war depicted in Trek. And connections in it to other episodes become vast. From all the Cardassian, Sisko, and Dominion episodes to ones close by it like in the cards and the Romulan ally ones that start here.

"Prime" as a concept was only really something being bandied about because of "Old Man Spock" in Star Trek 2009. But since the license that was granted back then and that is more or less what we still have now all be with a name change on who is willing to own up to it. So I would suggest that Old Man Spock is from the same Universe as Star Trek Picard (or one close to it) but that Universe IS MOST ASSUREDLY not the same one as TNG. Now when it comes to Prodigy I might accept an argument for that being so close to the source material as for any difference to be as inconsequential as the fact that Harry Kim dies and got replaced by a duplicate. But the difference between Source and TNG was as painfully Obvious as the visual differences are in Strange New Worlds. Heck if I was being mischievous I might suggest Star New World's "source Material isn't Star Trek as much as it is Galaxy Quest and The Orville - but they play it for laughs rather a lot even by TOS standards.

Keep in mind the episode, _Bread and Circuses._ That episode, written by Gene Roddenberry, directly and unequivocally promotes conservative values. When Spock, Kirk, and McCoy were confused by how culturally evolved and downright the sun worshippers were on the planet below them, Uhura speaks up: *Uhura:* _"I'm afraid you have it all wrong Mr. Spock, all of you. I've been listening to some of their old-style radio waves. The Empire's spokesman trying to ridicule their religion... but he couldn't. Don't you understand? An example of the balance (and tolerance) I've discussed, even when Roddenberry himself was an atheist who cared nothing for organized religion. Time has muddied the argument about it I think.

I am not a Christian either, by the way: but the universe is too _structured_ to be the result of happenstance. I agree, seeing this as "not prime" makes it easier to have it. I don't like any of these as it lack what i like in Star Trek but it's fine to have the "modern man kind greedy timeline". It bugs me that they push it as connected to the prime continuity when they haven't even made an effort to continue the old trek story and tech. I kind of see all shows as it own universe (even TOS and TNG aren't really connected) if it has a different show runner. Sure, it can have similarities (like Khan) but TOS Khan for me isn't the same as ST II.. hence why he remember Pavel. At first I was opposed to the remake, years ago. But now I'm okay with it after rewatching it recently. Why create a great story if nobody has watched it? As long as he does it justice, I think we then can move on to the future afterwards.

Removing Sinclair entirely - is going to create some whopping problems, and heck I can think of a long list of things it will have to change completely or flat out remove. The whole Mimbari/Human hybrid thing for a start hinges on Valen - and it's not like Sheridan can be Valen unless you write Daleen and Sheridan out completely before the end - so preventing him from having his original end game - or moving it all back in time several thousand years to the past (which might work I guess) as at least then they can establish some thing in the past instead of the future.. But changing the start of your journey can only make the end very different too.

He's gotta change a lot, *a lot*, and that's gonna unravel another thread every time he pulls on one, especially several of the primary ones you mentioned. I dunno, JMS is a solid writer and maybe he can pull this off, but I'm concerned.

You can have still have his character, even if you don't start with him I suppose. Remember what happened with the first Psycore lady? She got given amazing powers by that dude on the run and then leaves the show. They then had to adapt to get the next lady amazing powers. 😅

@@_nom_ That was partly to allow her to block Bester I suspect. Her original story was kinda interesting - that Cyborg friend of Kosh's supposedly copied her "tells" to be able to incapacitate her but also made a copy of the Talia personality and so when she wa activated and her Talia self was over-written they would be able to restore her mostly to how Talia was but with her free will intact. I think her EXboyfriend's power transferred to her would be both what allowed that and also made her so dangerous. I a way it is sad that Lita was abandoned by almost everyone but Zack - who she never really gave a chance to in any real sense. But they were really crappy to her making her move quarters never trusting her and the like. If you put all that on Talia instead you come up against a problem which is her rival Love interests of Garibaldi and Ivanova - they'd be less likely to abandon her - unless of course Garibaldi was in a funk over best "getting to him". But ironically if he'd been able to tell her she'd likely have been able to fix it (either storyline version). What I realised last night is that Minbari were originally going to be very different in gender terms to humans - and so when Deleen turns into a Hybrid they become a she as well as half human - prior to that they were something else. I wouldn't be surprised if they bring that back - even if it is a bit to Earth Final Conflict like perhaps.

There is only one way to beat them, follow the rules they set down, and make over 25 percent changes to your designs. For example, there must be 100's of cop shows, one cop show can't suit a fan production for making a cop movie/show unless there is proof of copy infringement. Soooo instead of using the title Star Trek, just do what The Orville or Galaxy Quest did. Take the spirit and nature of Star Trek, and make enough changes visually, that fans get what they want. A fan show/movie about a star fleet from a federation of planets, that use star ships, whose population is mostly humans, with alien allies that are long haired warriors and/or trimmed haired intelligent and logical aliens. As well as human looking enemies with some biological/physical differences. The point is, follow Gene's vision, don't use ST names, use same episode style of the series, use the same spirit and nature of ST, and stick to ST canon. If you make too many changes, your fan movie will fail, just like the fake star trek they're making. I love Star Trek. I remember reading a couple of books from writers of the original Star Trek. One book was called The Star Wolf, which was the name of the ship. And the other was a book of short stories that read like episodes of Star Trek but not.
