Epic 2-Day Road Trip on Argentina's Route 40: Bariloche to San Martín
A road trip on Argentina’s Route 40 (RN40) should be on everyone’s bucket list. Spanning the long country from north to south along the western border, no matter how long you have this road will deliver incredible views, amazing hikes, and charming towns. Essentially, its Argentina’s road trip version of the USA’s Route 66.
While enjoying our extended stay in Bariloche, our friend Shelby joined us for a week of adventure. Part of this adventure included this 2 day trip up Route 40 and Back. Shelby is an adventure seeker, mountain climber, and incredible chef. He also brought his drone, so this video will include some beautiful drone footage of the Andes mountains.
Today’s story takes us from our home in Bariloche, to Villa la Angostura, and finally to San Martin de los Andes. This village is nestled in between two national parks, and is home to unmatched natural adventures.

A story about walking across the unusual border between chile and argentina. A story about walking across the border of Chile and Argentina, from Chile Chico to Los Antiguos. Separating these frontier towns is 14k of no man's land, and a lack of information on the internet on how to do it. These two countries share one of the longest borders in the world, and as such, there are many crossing po...

Argentina looks beautiful 🏔️🗻
It really is!!
less beautiful views more of that american driving stickshift please
Hahaha 😂
12:21 that's not the colosseum its an amphitheatre just like the colosseum, but its a French/Gaulish style roman one as France was in the roman empire and the amphitheatre built were like this one, the show isn't representing the Roman history in Italy but generic Roman provincial city in roman Gaul (France) roman empire was massive part of French history founding many cities like Paris, loved the video though
Cest fini ca a cause des migrants
Also my favorite quote “We start running at the stick”…glad to know amazing runners sometimes have to hype themselves up the same way I do when attempting a neighborhood jog
Right?!? We all need our little pep talks sometimes! 😉
6000 feet of elevation change in a 25k 😳😳 but I love that you just went for the race with minimal training ! People after my own heart!
Sometimes the lack of training makes it more fun 😅😂
Those views from the top! WOW !
Thanks so much David! The views were amazing. Just wait for our next few videos in this town…the views kept getting better and better! 😁
I would like to add that Bariloche and all of Patagonia are very expensive compared to the rest of the country, I think it's the same in Chile, is just that very few people live there and everything needs to be shipped from a 1000 miles away
100%! Significantly more expensive than the populated parts of the country. Groceries especially. We just consider it part of the “beauty tax” for how magical the location is
So awesome
@@dbstanczyk thanks Dusty!!
And yea you have to buy all your produce from the markets like or it’s way more so you gota ask the locals where to eat and stuff and get used to empanadad
@@AndrueSOCAL yes definitely!! We figured it out eventually 😅😂
That’s actually fine if your staying in hostels
Loving your videos! Thank you. 😊👍👍
Thank you for watching! We’re glad you’re enjoying the series!!
I'm french and I think I have to go there someday,I love medieval times and pirates ❤.
@@HPGot21oh you would love it!!! I wish we spoke French so we could appreciate it even more!
I have been there many times. It has become overdeveloped and the lake is polluted.
Thank you for watching! We can only imagine how magical it was back when you first visited!
@@collinandmeredith It was. I almost felt like I was in Europe, LOL. The local flora and fauna were not the same of course. I also returned in a different year to ski there in July. It is not very cold there in winter, but the heating indoors is inadequate. It feels like just before or just after the Canadian winter, ie. late fall or early spring, LOL. There is enough snow in Canada for skiing during those periods, but it is not a minus 20'C to minus 30'C deep freeze in Bariloche. Cheers!
Having spend enough time in the northern parts of the US, I do not envy the deep freezes in Canada! Great to hear Bariloche is more manageable. We hope to return there again, and with your description might make it a ski trip next time. 😁 Thank you!
@@collinandmeredith Enjoy! All the best for you! I do not like my former bad habit of being a chronic pessimist. It might be a better place than it was the last time I was there. These things go up and down. Cheers!
Honestly, I am failing to get the entire logic of describing Bariloche as an overdeveloped place with a polluted lake. Of course, it can be true. And of course, it can also be true for almost every 150k population city worldwide. If someone visiting Bariloche in the last 70 years expected to see an untouched Eden of nature, I think Bariloche is not the correct exotic place to include in the agenda. On a two hours trip from Bariloche, you can find a place like that. Well, maybe not with the biggest ski centre in all SA. I grew up going to Bariloche with my parents every summer and winter. Now I live 100 miles away and go there five to ten times a year. Do I like it more now than before? No, I do not. I like less crowded places. But I think it is right to say at least at some point, that the place is overall, beautiful
I wanted to go to Bariloche since I was a kid but never been to Argentina. Glad to see you discovering this gem. Mendoza next?
@@casper_z1259 ah I hope you get to go! No we actually just stuck around here for this trip. Hoping to go to Mendoza one day 🤞
Hopefully you guys go went a little north to the 9th region. It's very green, lots of rural areas with some bigish cities in the mix.
Ah next time!!! We did make it up to Puerto Monte, but that was the furthest north for this trip!
You need to go to Villa La Angostura next ! It´s just around the lake, so close...
Yes!!!! One of our next video is our road trip there 😂 you are on it lol
I can’t believe the bus pass was so affordable!! Was it convenient/reliable to get you where you wanted to go?
@@heatherroka5536 yes!!! So easy 😁 we we're impressed
So awesome. Fav travel duo
We are so honored 🥰
I feel like I want to go here even if it’s just for that coffee shop and cinnamon bun!
It was soooo good. Collin's been dreaming over it ever since :)
The shoes thing was fucking stupid. So sad you didn't get to enter, im sorry for that. It was ridiculous. Glad to know you could enter through a different entrance!
There was a rule for no food?!?? I’ve heard of no fruits, vegetables, and meat but not no food. Was there any particular reason?? I think I would have been pretty hangry by the time I reached my hotel 😂 Glad it ended up being a good adventure!
Haha no I think you can have most foods, but Collin panicked and made us finish the jar of peanut butter just in case. Because on our flight home from England they made him throw it away and he was super upset 😂😂
really cool video guys !!! cheers from chile
Thank you so much for watching! We loved our time in Chile so much, what a special place!
Which dates were you in patagonia chilena? And how cold would you say it was?
@@marionasalipdecendra5014 We were there late january to March! It was chilly at night like 40-50 f and during the day it could get up to 80f. I'd say pack lots of layers and be prepared for it all 😂
More cute dogs! This place looks magical
This place was so cool! The dogs were everywhere 😂 and they were so friendly (except the one…). You would love Chile Chico, the “Windy City”!
lol the ending is amazing with the bumps. Those views are so pretty!! Reminds me ever so slightly of twin lakes in Colorado :)
It does look like twin lakes! Just slightly harder to get to 😅😂
Qué buena experiencia!! Saludos desde Santiago de Chile!

That dog was a ton of fun!! We hope all our horse adventures include dogs with this much energy. 😍
Loved watching this and to see how a couple less than half our age was 10X less prepared and aware than we were when we did our first Camino. Thanks for the laughs!
haha so glad you enjoyed our under preparedness...I promise if you watch the rest of the series we eventually figure it out ;) Buen Camino!!
Beautiful job, nice edition and Coyhaique looks awesome under your shots Congrats

I’m not sure how or where you learned about DNT and the concept of hut-to-hut hiking, but this is meant to be a secret. It’s the crème de la crème of experiencing Norwegian nature. You’re welcome to participate now that you know, but please keep it to yourself. Don't tell where you are - to anybody.
Thank you so much for sharing this with us. With the trail being developed with the intent to encourage tourism, we had no idea it was such a secret. It’s undoubtedly a special experience, and one that should be cherished. We hope you enjoy your time hiking out there!

@@NormandieDiexAie De quoi tu parles ?
Shows are amazing but never forget it is christian oriented park mentioning in every show that christianism wins against other religions or invaders. They try to send political messages in their show.
Thank you so much for watching! We agree, those themes are apparent …but the shows are so intense
The norwegian "Allemannsrett" you are talking about...the right to "freely roam the land" , has a few limitations. You are not allowed to, withour permission, enter someones garden, land that is farmed for crops (pastures are OK, as long as there are no animals there) or any military, government or business areas clearly marked "no entry". When camping on someones land you are expected to stay out of sight, and not be heard. Other that that, you can go anywhereyou want to.
Thanks for the extra clarifying! Its so crazy to us as Americans that you have the right to "freely roam the land" - and the limitations you have make so much sense. I wish we did the same.
