At the end I wasn't actually expecting the sound to play until I logged in...
This one took me a lot longer than it probably should have. Mostly because I just wasn't in any sort of mood to create things, but I also had to learn new video editing software (again). I meant for this to be a quick little idea but it got kind of out of hand.

Making More Videos
Переглядів 1,4 тис.6 років тому
Hi I'll be making more videos if you couldn't already tell from the title somehow. Hopefully at least 1 a week. I didn't include this in the video, but another reason I'm trying the video route is because it's more of a series of short projects rather than one long-term project. Hopefully that will help with motivation in the long term. Also I like the response I get from making videos. Mostly ...

My adventure with 3D perlin noise. I'll go back to working on my game now... Revised and commented script: drive.google.com/open?id=1lGjJvXvfuJHM2sV99gcQqcvCbzBhPjnm Directions: - Create new GameObject and apply script (set block prefab to unity's cube and material to a new material). - Start game and press "G" to generate. Notes: - The terrain is actually mirrored on all axes. Pick a point far...

Download Link: drive.google.com/open?id=1B_IwrJKX9sQishwyrUbmWYCZrmhUwJTb The project is using Unity 2017.3.0. Just FYI. Update: Unity 2017.2.0 introduced the Vector2Int class. It doesn't make a difference, but it makes more sense to use it to keep track of tiles. It didn't exist when I originally made it. is there a way to make the floor mesh thicker? im having clipping issues wit h the player i believe are caused by the thinness of the floor

    • @renegadeloser777
      @renegadeloser777 9 місяців тому

      Not really. You will need to adjust your controller. If you are using physics it is generally better to move with transforms instead of rigidbodies. By nature, meshes are thin like that, and you can't adjust a mesh colliders "thickness" like you can another collider.

    The marching cubes algorithm really isn't that difficult to get working. Basically it's just batching vertices into groups of 8, each vertex represents one bit in an 8-bit integer depending on if its solid or air. This spits out a value ranging to 0-256 which is used as the index to fetch the correct triangles from a lookup table, and then you can just add those to your mesh. Hit me up if you need any help.

    What if you mapped some 2d perlin noise to the surface of that sphere, then lowered the threshold of the 3d perlin noise as it got closer to the surface? This way you'd have a planet with a solid surface and caves inside.

    "If I hadn't went down this rabbit hole, then I would have spent these last few days wondering what would've happened if I had." I wish I could have come to this realization sooner, I usually phrase it along the lines of "what's stopping you?" I have a bad habit of NOT writing things down, and future me frequently suffers for it when trying to recollect those ideas.

    So, uh, did you ever go back to marching cubes/voxel terrain? There's a lot more resources and tutorials out there these days. There's also Dual Marching Cubes, which is supposed to generate cleaner meshes with no degenerate triangles, which MC can sometimes do due to how it lerps vertices. I used that in my final year project. Dual Contouring can also be used, in its many varied algorithms, which is what No Man's Sky uses for their terrain. Both have their own strengths.
