12-27-2024
We head to the the west end of the Ouachita Mountains in search of some new campsites along a stream. Heavy rains ahead of our arrival and during make for some interesting camping and wonderful creek side camping sounds. I visit a fire cabin atop Bee Mountain.

8-21-24 I spent about 3 weeks off and on trying to get this fixed. After 2 shops looked at it one said I needed a new upper control arm, wrong. The other one said that the shock needed to be replaced, wrong. Then I finally found someone that isolated it to the spherical bearing at the base of the passenger side front shock. Then spent several days and many many many telephone calls and finally ...

5/24/2024 It seems to be quickly getting to the point where you can't really go camping on a holiday weekend unless you get there a day or two in advance and secure a spot. Camping is getting super popular. It seems being in Texas. Our camping season is somewhat limited as well as the places to go are. Arkansas is just as close as any other, reasonable dispersed camping area I prefer not camp a...

1/28/2024 I was getting the itch to visit Big Bend and thought I would try the ranch since the year before I did Big Bend National Park. Big Bend Ranch is quite a bit more rugged than it's big brother but an awesome place nonetheless. You will need four-wheel-drive and a little bit of clearance to do some of the more backcountry sites. On my journey, I stop in Marathon, Texas both coming and go...

    Really want one, but I am reevaluating that. Just the difficulty of putting it on the roof and taking it down maybe a showstopper for me. The thought was to be able to pull my boat into a campsite pop it up fast and then in the morning, be able to close it in seconds and head out fishing. Seems it’s not that easy. I would not want to leave it on all summer. Building a contraption to ease the installation and taking it off seems a showstopper to me.

      I thought so. You would like to think that with the $460 that they are going to get from the both of us they could afford to put up sings that you can actually see.

  • @OutdoorNomad

    I use a heated metal plate to eat from. Have to use a glove to hold it but it works. The vehicle restriction is because of those that don't think and go down there the day after the water goes down and its still muddy and leave huge tire ruts everywhere which would make it a bad place to camp. That is what I found out after going to the ranger station and asking. 🤠

    • @HoustonBrownPhotography
      @HoustonBrownPhotography Місяць тому

      Good to know. The reason the ranger told me was. I can understand the reasoning, but since it was not wet and we were not tearing up the ground I think it would have been more appropriate to give us a warning instead of $460 in fines.

    Excellent! You answered one major question on how to tighten the front. Do you also have the 1” foot that the tent sets on.? Or is this why you have to use the pads?

    • @HoustonBrownPhotography

      I have to use those little square furniture pads so that the tent braces do not reach the roof of the vehicle. They act as a spacer.

    Man, I knew that was Mosquero as soon as I saw the first building. I'm in Amarillo and I ride my KLR between Logan and Mosquero a lot. There's a 60-mile dirt road that's fun to ride and goes down into a canyon with a couple water crossings. There's no camping since it's all ranch land, but it's fun to ride.

    Guale 2 is something - the view is amazing and I think it's the most isolated campsite at BBRSP. Since we're no longer in TX, I don't think I'll have another chance to visit the park or the camp site anymore, but your video did the site a lot of justice. A lot of great memories - and I really enjoy the hike from the site to Javelin Road. One of the only places I have 2 full size spares, 20 gallons of extra fuel and water, recovery gear, a GPS with inreach and still feel unprepared, but totally worth it.

      According to the website they are both walk in but 002 is definitely a walk-in where as 001 you can pull your car right up to the bench if you like. Yes, the site says 75 foot walk-in but there is nothing there to prevent you from pulling in. As you can see in the video, my truck is parked right past the picnic bench. A great isolated spot.

    I grew up in El Paso. Back in the '60s and '70s, we had some property about 5 miles east of Cloudcroft, where we would go to beat the heat. I lived there and in Cloudcroft for about three years. I love that area. The afternoon rains would drop the temperature from 15 to 20 degrees. I now live in the northern NM mountains near Santa Fe. It is beautiful here in the mountains of New Mexico.
