Drawing a Baby Rhino: A Step-By-Step Guide Course Preview
I wish I had watched this a few days ago before I bought these :( I'm a complete beginner though, so they will do for now.
@MichelleHughesMoo I used them for 5 years when I started and I think they are most people's first set.
I love these pencils! I think they're great quality. I've tried other pencils and they don't have the smoothness and veritility as these. Most pencils I have come across are hard and gritty all through the shades. But these are excellent. I got the 24 pack and it was worth it.
Thank you for the comment. I think Derwent are the worst for grit I have found. I would be happy to use the Steadtler pencil's as they are very smooth and quite similar in feel to the CARAN a'ACHE Grafwoods that I use.
How can I put another mono zero if the previous one has finished? I’ve been trying it for like a day now but I did not get it
@Fasasiridwanullahi On the one I had you held the button in to remove the old one and then do the same to insert a new one. Hope this helps
Amazing! Which brand of pencil and powder do you use? I think that graphite is interesting like main medium because you need to get a deep understanding about values and medium itself. Your 3b background is so dark!
@antonioblanco3086 Thank you for watching. The pencils I use are the CARAN d'ACHE Grafwood graphite pencils and the 3B powder was made from a 3B Grafcube of the same make. I prefer to make the powder myself as it then matches with the pencils I use. I do also have an older video on how to make this. One thing also to consider is paper as this does make a difference when trying to achieve dark tones. The two papers I use are StCuthberts Saunders Waterford but mainly nowadays I use Arches Aquerelle.
@JamieBoots thank you so much. Hot pressed right? An artwork like this, how much is it?
@antonioblanco3086 yes hot press 300gram. A picture like that in a gallery or exhibition is about £10.000
@@JamieBoots thank you sir! All of the best
Perfect video to help me decide my next electrical eraser, thank you!
@mitchellbratton6617 Thank you. I have been using the Artecho for 3 years now and it still works perfectly. I did find that it is actually made by tenwin and then re branded under many brands such as Tihoo and Afmat. The Afmat comes with 140 eraser refills so is a good one to get.
@JamieBoots that's the one I had and wanted to replace but I reached out to costumer support and they just straight up sent me a new one for free
i would recommend fabercastell, staedtler graphite pencils and conte de paris charcoal any given day if you want to go pro
Cool jamie
@@jacintahunt9888 Thank you
I use coloured pencil, but want to get back to doing some graphite. I have mainly used FC 9000, but have just bought some individual Pitt Graphite to see how I get on. The drawing I have in mind has a lot of dark in the background, so we shall see ! Interesting that you found you didn’t need anything darker than 8B. Also useful to know which paper you use. For coloured pencil I am currently using Fabriano Artistico as I don’t care for the texture of Arches for coloured pencil, but have yet to try it with graphite. Haven’t tried St Cuthbert’s paper at all, although it is on my radar…
Thank you for the comment. The StCuthberts takes dark tone very well so does the Aches but it does take an extra layer to build the same depth.
Btw what's the pencil that you're using
I use the CARAN d'ACHE Grafwood pencils. The ones I use are 4H,H,2B,4B and 9b I will also use a 9H but that is a Creacolor as CARAN d'ACHE don't make one.
Should i order the derwnt pencil or fabercastel 9000?
The Derwent pencils are the worst I have ever used so I would suggest avoiding them. The Faber castell 9000 are a good pencil as are the Staedtler Mars Lumagraph graphitr.
@JamieBoots but I've seen other youtubers say Derwent is the best in the market??? What should I do then I just want to invest in a good pencil...
@@Nekomi_18 The pencils are full of grit and they are very inconsistent in tone. I used them when I first started but it wasn't until I tried a different make that I realized how bad they where. The set I used for the the review was brand new but still had the same issues as the ones I used over 20 years ago.

very well done and detailed video! i’m getting these by sunday, excited after this review!
@akil.2839 Thank you for the comment. Just remember as I said in the video they can be quite gritty and a bit inconsistent in tone.
Me too. I really like your skillshare classes, wish you would do more. Love that tiger in the background, hint, hint. Will try this over the weekend.

Thank you so much, that's great to hear and have a happy holiday aswell.
Hi Jamie nice to have you back Liz
Thanks Liz
Great review, what paper do you use?
@heikization Thank you. I use two papers St Cuthberts Saunders Waterford 300gsm hot pres and Arches Aquerelle 356gsm hot press. The one used in the video was the St Cuthberts. Both take dark tone very well. For my more detailed works I use the arches, both papers can be used with the indentation technique but the arches is much tougher the downside being it is harder to work
I love your teaching style! I know you are on Skillshare, (and will be joining for your lessons) but are you, or have plans to be on Patreon? There are lots of artists on there, but not many graphite doing wildlife. Just wondering.
@NH-cc8il Thank you so much. Yes, I will be starting a Patrion channel in the future. I just need to make some content.
Thanks Jamie! I noticed in your videos your pencil often is quite blunt when adding tone. I looked but didn't see one: do you have a video on how you get that bluntness and generally how you sharpen/blunt your pencils? Thanks!
@NH-cc8il thank you for watching. I always use the B Range of pencils blunt and just let them wear down naturally. When it gets to blunt I will give it one turn in a sharpener so it is not fully sharpened. I use 4 and 9H pencils sharp again using a regular sharpener and then finish the tip with a small fille, but they are mainly used to indent texture.
@@JamieBoots Thank you for the great reply!

Beautiful review. Thank you
Does anyone have a comparison on the Faber Castell Matt 1111 series and these?
Thank you for the question. I have never tried these so don't know what they are like, I did have a look but again could not find any comparison reviews. This would make a good review but don't seem to be available in the UK.
@JamieBoots May just do my first review ...

@@rebeccaw_artist4127 Thank you so much.
Magnificent cats! Still experimenting with embossing tools. Haven't acquired the knack with them yet. I have craft ball end tool but the contrast between white and black still missing. Wondering if I really need embossing tool or not. The dart seems like it would be well balanced and comfy. Thanks for idea.
Thank you so much for the comment. I find the dart works really well, much better than the embossing tools and you can shape the tip to what you want. You may need to use more pressure if your not getting the contrast also make sure to use a blunt pencil over the top.
Which one did you advise to buy first for beginners
@excellentholuwasheyi2754 If you are just starting I would say go for the Tombow as it is the cheapest option. You can always add the electric later as you gain experience.
I love homemade artist tools! Very good video. I also use old Micron pens for embossing, so don't throw them out when the ink is spent.
Thank you so much. Home made tools are great and glad you liked the video.
That looks so good. Will try it wwhen I have a suitable project. Subbed to ya.
Thank you so much. It is certainly a very effective technique.
So when the animal is completed the entire area is embossed , or are some of the shadow areas simply coloured dark with no embossing? You are a true master sir!
Thank you for sharing your review! I have been looking at many reviews before making any purchases, and it didn't even dawn on me that the sticky tack in my desk drawer could be put to a better use. I know you mentioned that you may get about 3 years use out of your kneaded eraser, and that the sticky tack would need to be replaced "regularly"; how long do you think it might last in comparison?
@monoymono9 This would depend on use but I would say about a month but this could last a bit longer. As soon as you notice a change in the way it feels or in how effective it is then it needs to be replaced. Thank you for watching.
Where are you getting the graphite blocks from?
@@RahsaanKnight The block I use is a 3B CARAN d'ACHE Grafcube and can be purchased in the UK from Jacksons Art Supplies. Thank you for watching.
Thank you.
How you did white Mustache?
Hi Ingrid, All the fur texture was first indented into the paper using a dart then when a blunt pencil is used over the top it leaves white lines creating the appearance of fur. For the whiskers a 9H pencil is used to indent two lines either side of the whisker to create it. The 9H is used for this because it leaves a feint mark which is easier to see when working around the whisker.
I have a question. Can't I just use the electric eraser without pressing the button and still perform the same function as a tombow monozero? I've used pencil erasers in the past, not tombows, but from this video they both seem like they're essentially the same. And honestly, I prefer working with the electric eraser rather than the eraser pencil.
@pranavageeth9871 I personally prefer the electric as well. Yes you could use the electric the same way as the Tombo but the tip could rotate as you use it depending on how tight the motor is. I used the tombo to test it and for the video but after that it went back in the draw. Thank you for watching.
Hi Jamie. How long did this picture take to complete and how often did you work on it?
It was a lot of work and it took about 9 months to complete. I worked on it most days. In terms of how long each day, it's difficult to say as some days were longer than others depending on how it was going. Thank you for watching.
@@JamieBoots ok thank you. I'm just starting my journey in drawing and it's good for me to get perspective on how long they take. Thanks! I'm really enjoying your channel!
@@jonathandockney Thank you so much
Very informative, thanks! I was considering the Tombow eraser vs the Derwent or Cretacolor electric erasers, but that Tenwin has caught my eye. Finer erasers and recharging are big advantages in my eyes.
Yes, the Tewnwin is great. It is also re-branded under many other names. The Affmat version comes with a lot of extra re-fills. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment
Autocorrect messed my word up pastelmat
I have never used Pastelmat so I don't know. I would say try it on a piece of scrap first to see if it works. I always use 300gram Hot Press watercolor papers as I need a smooth tough surface when I start indenting texture. Thank you for the question.
Can you use pastel at paper with this technique
Thank you for making this video, I want to experiment with graphite powder on my gel plate but have found that it is pretty expensive. I have the graphite stick so I will attempt to make some powder! Worth a try!🇨🇦
Thank you so much. The pepper corn grinder is ideal as you can just grind out the amount you need at any one time.
@@JamieBoots it’s brilliant, especially for small amounts!
Graphite shine?
Thanks for the question. As with most graphite pencils you do get a degree of shine particularly as you get to the darker grades but this can be mitigated by building the tone in layers but you will always have some shine. Graphite is a crystal and as such it will reflect light to some degree depending on crystal shape. If shine is a concern I would suggest using the Faber Castell Graphite Matt pencils in conjunction with the Faber Castell 9000 series for example the 9000 series for the H range have lighter tones and the Graphite Matt for the darker B tones. I would say that when I tested those that I could not see any benefit going past the 8B as I could get a very dark tone with this. Personally, shine doesn't bother me because when a picture is framed behind glass, hung and lit correctly I don't find this a problem. Paper will also make a difference to amount of shine but mainly to depth of tone. A bit of a long reply but hope this helps and thank-you for watching.
Great review thanks
Simply beautiful
Jamie, your explanation of your tech is excellent. It makes me feel that i can do it too. Maybe one day 😂. Thanks for you kind teaching.
Which one is more coarse: this or Faber Castell Pitt Matte Graphite? And which one is darker?
The Faber Castell does have a Corser feel particularly as you get to the darker grades. I would say I could achieve the same level of darkness with both. Paper does make a difference when it comes to achieving dark tones and with the Graphite Matt pencils I didn't see any benefit of using past the 8B. Thank you for watching.
Wonderful , i just want to thankyou for revealing some of your methods. Amateurs like me need mentors like you to enjoy the hobby. Thanks always!
Hi sir, ur agreat artist and i want to know that u noticed that softer grade of these pencils like 8b does not shine like others and in my opinion it's a plus point ❤
Thank you so much. Some makes of pencil do definitely shine more than others and these are pretty good compared to some others. Thanks for watching and sorry for not getting back to you sooner.

Hi, Jamie. Your videos are always so informative and a wonderful reminder at the lengths you go to during your creative process. In the days of UA-cam that we live in with many videos being fast tracked, we often forget (or don't realize) that creating detailed masterpieces such as your work takes many (MANY!) hours to achieve. I can tell how much you love the process and it is evident in the time and care you spend on each element. Thank you as always for sharing your process with us. Much appreciation.
That's so nice to hear thank you. I think the picture has taken about 4 months to get to this point but a lot more still to be done.
@@JamieBoots May I ask a question? I hope it isn't being impertinent. Is this your full-time work? I ask because I have been doing art for a living for over 30 years and I find it difficult to have time to do personal art sometimes. I realize that these beautiful drawings are mostly commissions, but I was wondering if this was your main living. I am so slow creating my detailed artwork that I am not able to do that for income. @SheilaLandry I have been full time for about twenty years but it is a hard business as pictures take so long to do. I do run classes as this provides more stability as we'll as prints of my and have an agent/publisher who deals with that side of the business.
