A brilliant review Jamie, I've used Derwent pencils and everything you say in the review is bang on. I've now switched over to the same brand as yourself now. I'm much happier using them in conjunction with charcoal pencils with no issues at all. All the best mate. : )
Thanks Lynton. Yes, they are definitely the worst pencils I have used so far and it made me realise why I switched all those years ago. I cannot belive they haven't fixed these issues by now. Great to hear that the Grafwood's mix with charcoal. I have only tried it on a piece of scrap paper but the CARAN d'ACHE charcoal pencil has a similar waxy feel to the grahite. Take care mate.
The Derwent pencils are the worst I have ever used so I would suggest avoiding them. The Faber castell 9000 are a good pencil as are the Staedtler Mars Lumagraph graphitr.
@@Nekomi_18 The pencils are full of grit and they are very inconsistent in tone. I used them when I first started but it wasn't until I tried a different make that I realized how bad they where. The set I used for the the review was brand new but still had the same issues as the ones I used over 20 years ago.
I stopped using Derwent graphite pencils years ago. I found them too gritty and the values too inconsistent. It's a shame because i prefer to buy British whenever possible. The Faber Castell, Caran Dache and even Lyra Rembrandt are much better options.
Currently I have a set of derwent pencils which were my first set of high quality pencils I did notice compared to my pentel orenz mechanical pencil was a bit lower quality. Wondering what set of graphite pencils I should buy next. (I would rank myself as a intermediate / kind of beginner in drawing)
I would say that I have found makes such as Staedtler, Faber Castell and CANAN d'ACHE have all been good to use. You certainly don't need the full rang for example the CARAN d'ACHE pencils that I use have 15 in the set but I probably only use about six of them covering darkest to lightest. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment.
I don’t like the derwent graphite pencils mainly as there always seems to be a harsh bit going through the core and ends up scratching the paper. Not good
The Kneadable eraser that I am using is made by CARAN d'ACHE but the one I would recommend is a FAKTI K20 This is absolutely identical to the CATAN d'ACHE but is easier to find and half the price , both are quite firm and hold shape well. Another option is the Faber Castle Kneadable but it is softer so does not hold shape as well as the other two. Hope this was of help and thanks for watching.
I bought a set of Derwent pencils. I HATED them. Same as you said...though at the time I was so new to drawing I couldn't express why I hated them so much. They just didn't "work". As a side note, I got so annoyed with pencils I liked that just weren't marked well enough to quickly see the grade that I came up with my own solution. I color coded 'em. Cheap kids acrylic paint, dip the ends. Once they dried, I dipped them again in clear nail polish because my cheap paint...well, acted like cheap paint. Only took a couple of minutes, and now I know if that pencil has a pink end...it's an HB. Mechanical pencils got the same treatment with small rubber bands. I suppose when a pencil gets short enough to need an extender I'll have to paint those too!
the truth is that those pencils are real crap with pratically no difference from 2b to 9b. My greatest disappointment in art furniture since years and years.
Thanks for a reviewing this set. Your comments were very informative.
Really glad it was useful.
very well done and detailed video! i’m getting these by sunday, excited after this review!
@akil.2839 Thank you for the comment. Just remember as I said in the video they can be quite gritty and a bit inconsistent in tone.
i would recommend fabercastell, staedtler graphite pencils and conte de paris charcoal any given day if you want to go pro
Thank you so much for your review. Your opinion, & comments, on your reviews helps so much. Thank you.

Amazing Artwork, a serious inspiration. Glad I found your channel.
That's so nice to hear, Thank you.
Thanks for givimg an honest review! The inconsistency in quality is concerning.. think im happy to stick with faber castell graphite 👌
Thank you so much for tacking the time to watch and comment.
Great review as usual, love your work ❤
Thank you
I wish I had watched this a few days ago before I bought these :( I'm a complete beginner though, so they will do for now.
@MichelleHughesMoo I used them for 5 years when I started and I think they are most people's first set.
Should i order the derwnt pencil or fabercastel 9000?
The Derwent pencils are the worst I have ever used so I would suggest avoiding them. The Faber castell 9000 are a good pencil as are the Staedtler Mars Lumagraph graphitr.
@JamieBoots but I've seen other youtubers say Derwent is the best in the market??? What should I do then
I just want to invest in a good pencil...

Thank you for watching and I was surprised to see they were just as bad as when I originally used them years ago.

@@JamieBoots Well thank you for taking the time to reply! Looking into steadler and graft wood pencils currently!

Thank you for the comment and yes the quality is very poor.
I love Derwent, but their graphite line was a big disappointment for me... I'll stick with my Tombow mono 100
Thanks for the comment and yes, there graphite line is disappointing.
