Cruising Onward
United States
Приєднався 4 вер 2013
We're Vickie and Guy, sweethearts from way back in the last century who married just a few months after we graduated from high school. Within weeks of our wedding, we moved to Japan and we've been traveling for work and play ever since.
Currently, we're living and cruising aboard ONWARD, our 42-foot Kadey-Krogen trawler along with our first mate, Sailor, who is an Irish Terrier dog. Before this boat we lived for six years aboard another trawler, a Nordhavn 40, also named ONWARD.
We love our liveaboard lifestyle for many reasons, not the least of which is that it gives us front row seats to enjoy God's amazing creation. Sunrises and sunsets, dolphins and pelicans, bright sunny days and starlit nights, all testify to the glory of the Creator.
We're glad you're here and hope that you'll hit that SUBSCRIBE button so you get all of our updates.
Welcome aboard...and ONWARD!

Episode 21: Beautiful Beaufort, NC
In a word, Beaufort, North Carolina is a wonderful place to visit. We enjoyed it so much that we stayed a few days longer than we expected to. I think most boaters understand that we have ideas more than we have plans.
Thank you for watching! We really do appreciate you taking the time to drop by.

We dropped our anchor on Mile Hammock Bay, which is located at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. It was a nice anchorage and Guy had a heavy load of grading to finish so we stayed three nights. We woke before the sunrise one morning and saw dozens of Marines swimming around the anchorage. We aren't sure but it seems that they had been dropped into the water at about 10:00 PM the night before beca...

After a peaceful night at anchor on Thoroughfare Creek, South Carolina we embarked on a 60-mile trip to Holden Beach, North Carolina, where we docked at the Holden Beach Transient Dock. Cruising through South Carolina was a beautiful trip for the ONWARD crew. We spent a couple extra nights and days on the anchor as we waited for a storm with gale force winds to calm down. We made good use of the time doing work for our contract jobs, baking fresh bread, eating satisfying home-cooked meals, and enjoying the sounds of the wind, rain, and waves that were hitting ONWARD. Episode 16: Skinny Water and a Fat Barge

Cruising on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (AICW) comes with some challenges, particularly when it comes to narrow channels and skinny depths. South Carolina can be tough, given its diurnal - i.e., twice daily - tides, which run from two to four feet on an average day. On this trip we met a tow with a barge on a channel that was so narrow and shallow that the tow captain kindly drove his ba...

I love this town. And that food!!! Wow. It’s 7:00am my time and I was salivating for Mexican food! Beautiful!
It was amazing! There was another Mexican Restaurant in town and it was good too. Perhaps that one will show up in the next video 🙂
Had a dog years ago running on Drift Wood. There are holes were the water has washed sand away around the trees. Ran through one of those and disappeared for a second, came out on his back. Gave trees wide berth after that
That place really is remarkable. We hope to return someday and take Sailor there so she can run around too. I think she would be just as fascinated as we were. Cheers!
Guy and Vicky! I'm happy to have fou d your channel. We met in Chesapeake City, and our dogs had a little play. I'll enjoy getting caught up with all your episodes!
So nice to hear from you, Patrick! We enjoyed meeting you and Rosy (I hope she'll forgive me if I misspelled her name 😎). We wish you and your family the best cruising! We hope to see you on the water again someday.
I always enjoy when you talk to coast guard or bridge men etc. Idk why, but it’s so cool. 🏄♀️
We enjoy talking with the bridge and lock tenders, as well as the professional captains on barges and ships. Literally every one we've ever spoken with has been wonderfully kind and patient and helpful, with only one exception (a surly bridge tender near New Orleans a few years ago).
@@CruisingOnward I can see that. Their job is literally on the water, checking out tides and sea life… yada yada. They likely had lunch at a seaside cafe. They probably live just up the street. Why wouldn’t they be a wonderful bunch? As for the other guy… he probably lives inland. 🤭
Your anchor line must have been laying in the mud. That was a LOT of mud! Wow.
It was very muddy and the mud was very sticky. I don't think we mentioned it, but our washdown pump gave up the ghost while washing off the chain that morning. We had about 20 feet of chain left to wash and were unable to, so we had to just send it into the chain locker with all that mud. The decks were a mess! I had a replacement pump in our spares, but man, it was a pain to swap out because the pump is tucked away in a small space behind a small door in the head. I had to take a couple things apart to get to it and then work one-handed and nearly upside down to get the job done. Such is life on a boat.
@@CruisingOnward 😂🤣😂. Guy was remiss if he didn’t get that for YT.
Or… was it Guy hanging upside down? Then Vickie was remiss. All I know is that if I tried to film Larry doing that job, I might be thrown overboard!!! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
@@mallariculp3551 It was Guy who was upside down. We have a lot of unused video of Guy doing awkward jobs in awkward positions and awkward places. 😎
@@CruisingOnward you should piece them together and title it “so, you want to own a boat?” 😂🤣😂 I’d so watch that! Hee hee
Guy looks very officerish up there! I’d make a still of that one!
I don’t think Sailor ever appeared in this one, but I heard her growl. That was funny.
LOL! Sailor's always there somewhere behind the scenes.
@@CruisingOnward whew. I was hoping she hadn’t fallen off the stern during that big wake!! That was cool to watch your big boat take a wake.
What are those birds? Eagles? Bald eagles? Seals? What are they???
If you're talking about the birds that build big nests on top of the channel markers, those are ospreys. They're beautiful birds of prey. Very interesting to watch and listen to. www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Osprey/overview#
@@CruisingOnward thank you. I was baffled.
@@CruisingOnward that was interesting. I noticed they show osprey in So Ca year round.. yet I’ve never seen one before. But I won’t be building a place for some white-headed hawk to nest. That’s a definite!!
I’m not a fan of no see’ums either, Guy.
They annoy us a bit and they taste funny. 😁
@@CruisingOnward 😂🤣😂
It must be pretty cool having them open the bridge for you. 😎🏄
It's fun sometimes, but also a bit of a pain when we have to just hang around waiting while dealing with currents and wind in crowded quarters as we did in this video. We've gotten better at it but it can still get dicey when we're in a narrow space.
20 Seagulls!!!
Sounds like a great name for a band! 😉
One question… I know you work hard anchoring, fixing stuff, yada yada, but is boating like sailing, where you’re working most of the cruise time? Just wondering.
We tend to do more of our boat work when we're docked or anchored. Unlike sailing, we don't have to handle lines and swap sails and continually tack, so we mostly just get to just enjoy the views while steering, watching for hazards, adjusting speed, and the like. Also, Vickie is usually engaged with her contracting work while we're cruising, but I do most of mine once we've stopped for the day.
Sailor is a hyper girl! It’s so nice she can do that. Dinner looked yum! But most of all I loved the harbor footage. Real life on a boat!!
You're right about Sailor being hyper. She loves to run, especially after being stuck on the boat for a few days. She's starting to figure out that riding the dinghy is a good thing because it means she'll get to run on a beach or somewhere. Today she had a breakthrough while at a beach and waded into the water up to her chest, and she even retrieved her ball from the water. That's a new thing and we're really excited to see what she does as she gets bolder.
@@CruisingOnward lol. Yeah that’s all good until an alligator pops up! But it is nice she’s exploring the world!! Whoo hoo!
@@CruisingOnward oh.. and make sure she doesn’t chase a seal out to sea. That gets a bit frantic! Lolol
@@mallariculp3551 -- Sounds like there's a great story behind that advice!
@@CruisingOnward there is! Lolol. I ran the length of two beaches as she headed south and further and further out. She was well past the pier when the seal finally went under and there she was alone. She was unable to even hear me, and I was a speck on the beach- but I’m jumping, waving my arms and yelling as loud as humans get. I was almost out of options when she finally heard my voice and started back to shore. She made it all the way back to the breakers, but she couldn’t make it through them. So I had to go in and rescue her, and the waves were insanely strong even for me. Of course, I had just run down two beaches and had my adrenaline on full speed for close to an hour. On any case, failure was not an option, as I saw it, and I got us both out of that and we both collapsed on the sand, where it took me several minutes to see that there were several people sunning on that sand, half in the water, who must have seen the whole thing. Yet not one of them got out of their chair or said anything. It still makes me question what I missed. You know? But she did not die at sea that day. By the grace of God. Frantic sums it up, right? Lol That story in more detail is in my book. I should have published it because that incident … I mean what are the odds that a seal chooses your dog from an entire beach of dogs - on Dog Beach - to play with, and your dog becomes bewitched by the seal so much as to ignore you. My dog loved me, and was spellbound by this seal, and she ignored me. The seal left, and she was frantic. She was looking for me. What was that? 😳 I remember it all.
Cool. Good video. Dinner looked great.
Thank you!
Love seeing Sailor run.
She is a runner, indeed.
What a great day for boating! Plus that gorgeous seagull! What a life!!
We love the seagulls, especially the ones that look like God dipped their heads into an inkwell. 😎

@@CruisingOnward ikr. A burger never lets you down. (Except for in-n-out). Lololol
@@mallariculp3551 Oh, I still crave a Double-Double!
@@CruisingOnward you’ve likely heard I was never a fan of the In-N-Out burger. But I get it…

I love this one. Sort of felt like sailing! Very pretty through there.
LOVE the guitar music! Great choice!

Where is Sailer during all this?
Sailor just hangs out with us inside. She really doesn't like the rain - so she's happy to just wait out the storm. She's never displayed any seasickness but she is fearful of thunder and lightning. We just keep her close and try to encourage and distract her with attention and treats. 🙂 Treats make the world a better place.

Treats work on EVERYONE!

Not Portuguese Man of Wars in our Ga waters, just large jellyfish... Use Bob's Tracks fore Aquamaps for your navigation through the ICW, it's a huge help. Welcome to Georgia!
Thank you for your kind welcome and for the info about the jellyfish. Bob's Tracks are magical, aren't they? We generally run Navionics on our Garmin Multi-Function Display, Aquamap with Bob's tracks on an iPad, and then either another Aquamap or Navionics on another iPad. We set them at different zoom levels - one close in, one at medium zoom, and then the one with Bob's tracks zoomed way in. That and our eyeballs keep us out of trouble...most of the time. 😎😉
I still love this one!
That's a favorite of ours, too. Cumberland Island is kinda magical and Sailor was even more entertaining than usual that day.
Love the videos, especially the parts where you show the reality of certain operations like anchoring. Lot of videos talk about it but don’t show what really goes on. Appreciate it so much. Working towards a 2026 September departure on the great loop from Lake Michigan. Looking for the right boat now.
Thank you for your encouragement! That anchor ball thing was an adventure, but wait till you see what we went through a couple days ago. 😎 We will post that video in a few weeks and it will probably have a title that refers to a battery meltdown or something like that.😬 That event was exciting - even a bit scary - but it gave us a great opportunity to meet some wonderful people at Grand Manor Marina and visit the beautiful little town of Belhaven, NC while we sorted out the problem and put things back together. This is a wonderful place to turn lemons into lemonade. Best wishes for great success in your boat hunt and preparation for the Great Loop.
Love to see Sailor, she's a cutie. I haven't tried to get my Irish Terrier in my wayfarer yet but she definitely won't do a wagon or a canoe. I enjoyed the video.
Thank you for watching and commenting, and your kind mention of Sailor. She's a nutty Irish Terrier who's slowly getting into the boat life. 🙂 She always puts up a fight when she figures out that we're going somewhere on the dinghy but then relaxes and settles in for the trip a few minutes into the ride.
What is the ICW?
Good question! The American Sailing Association gives a good description and history of the Intracoastal Waterway. -------------------- The Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) is a network of navigable channels, rivers, bays, and canals that stretches more than 3,000 miles along the eastern and Gulf coasts of the United States, from Boston, Massachusetts to Brownsville, Texas. The ICW provides a protected and inland route for boats to travel up and down the coast, avoiding the dangers of the open sea and the need to go around the Florida peninsula. The ICW was originally developed as a commercial waterway in the early 1900s...(more at asa.com/news/2023/02/21/what-is-the-intracoastal-waterway/).
@@CruisingOnward oh! The inter coastal! I’ve been there. 😄

Wow. I’ve never heard of such a place. Man O Wars, hell gate, … what’s going on over there? 🫤
😂 Sounds vicious, doesn't it?
@@CruisingOnward lololol. Yes!
I was so worried going through there. I made Mike hold for 1/2 hour till tide was right. We made it through fine. Bit it is nerve wracking.
We were pretty antsy about it too and also tried to time our arrival to high tide. In the end, Hell Gate was easier than a 3 or 4 mile section we transited a couple hours earlier. We actually touched bottom there right in the marked channel! It all turns out well, though, doesn't it? :-)
Seems like that chain was a goat rope. 😎
Exactly! What a mess. :-)
@@CruisingOnward lol
Why do you want so much line out in 21 feet? What’s the benefit of being so far from the anchor?
There are general rules of thumb for how much line or chain to put out when anchoring but we tend to put out a ratio of about 3-5:1 (i.e., feet of chain per foot of depth from our bow roller-ours is about 9 feet above the water-to the seabed) when you drop for a temporary hold (e.g., stopping for lunch or waiting on a lock or bridge opening), about 7:1 for an overnight with a bit of current or chop, and maybe 10:1 or even more for stormy conditions. These are approximates that depend on a few factors, such as how close the shore or other boats are, expected winds and waves, currents and tides, and the type of seabed (e.g., grassy, muddy, rocky), In this case, our ratio wasn't as high as we would have liked, but we were kinda close to the shore in an area affected by an 8 foot tide or so. Great question! ⚓️⚓️
@@CruisingOnward thank you. Great answer. Very interesting. 😁
@@mallariculp3551 -- Danke schön! ;-)
Does the dinghy take the same kind of fuel? Does it hold 20 gallons? A discount is a discount!! Get creative. 🙄
