Episode 20: Marines in the Water

- We dropped our anchor on Mile Hammock Bay, which is located at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. It was a nice anchorage and Guy had a heavy load of grading to finish so we stayed three nights.
We woke before the sunrise one morning and saw dozens of Marines swimming around the anchorage. We aren't sure but it seems that they had been dropped into the water at about 10:00 PM the night before because there was a lot of commotion onshore at that time.
Our cruise north from Mile Hammock Bay was calm and enjoyable.

I always enjoy when you talk to coast guard or bridge men etc. Idk why, but it’s so cool. 🏄♀️
We enjoy talking with the bridge and lock tenders, as well as the professional captains on barges and ships. Literally every one we've ever spoken with has been wonderfully kind and patient and helpful, with only one exception (a surly bridge tender near New Orleans a few years ago).
@@CruisingOnward I can see that. Their job is literally on the water, checking out tides and sea life… yada yada. They likely had lunch at a seaside cafe. They probably live just up the street. Why wouldn’t they be a wonderful bunch?
As for the other guy… he probably lives inland. 🤭
I don’t think Sailor ever appeared in this one, but I heard her growl. That was funny.

Mile Hammock also has a recreational boat ramp that Marines can use. I launched my 1st boat there on a regular basis. This video brought back old memories. Thanks for sharing!

That was a great anchorage that we would have been happy to stay at longer if we didn't need to keep moving north.

I did not do that particular training. I was a welder in a tank battalion 😂. Those guys were most likely Force Recon Marines. They are on par with Navy Seals.

I plan on doing the loop in 2032. About 8.5 years from now.
@@randolphbehm877 -- I thought they were probably some sort of special ops guys. I'm not sure but I think they may have gotten into the water at about 2230 the night before and then swam all night.
I hope you're able to do the Loop. We had the trip in our sights for a few years before we bought our first boat and we did a good bit of it, mostly in the rivers and Gulf of Mexico while on that boat. We just decided to finally finish it this year to get that special satisfaction of completion.

Your anchor line must have been laying in the mud. That was a LOT of mud! Wow.
It was very muddy and the mud was very sticky.
I don't think we mentioned it, but our washdown pump gave up the ghost while washing off the chain that morning. We had about 20 feet of chain left to wash and were unable to, so we had to just send it into the chain locker with all that mud. The decks were a mess!
I had a replacement pump in our spares, but man, it was a pain to swap out because the pump is tucked away in a small space behind a small door in the head. I had to take a couple things apart to get to it and then work one-handed and nearly upside down to get the job done.
Such is life on a boat.

What are those birds? Eagles? Bald eagles? Seals? What are they???
If you're talking about the birds that build big nests on top of the channel markers, those are ospreys. They're beautiful birds of prey. Very interesting to watch and listen to.

@@CruisingOnward that was interesting. I noticed they show osprey in So Ca year round.. yet I’ve never seen one before. But I won’t be building a place for some white-headed hawk to nest. That’s a definite!!
