Summiting The Temple of the Rain God: Monte Tláloc | Mountain Biking Mexico
Sunday December 3rd, 2023
Location: Coatlinchán, Estado de Mexico
Bike: Cinelli NEMO Gravel 2024
Strava: www.strava.com/activities/10325030421
4AM, Glorieta de Insurgentes: We begin the journey east across CDMX and Nezahuacóyotl to arrive in Chimalhuacán to meet with a local who has summited of the great Monte Tláloc. Let's say it's not "the best" area, and we've never met prior. Enrique y su compa Abraham have been mountain biking Tláloc for 22 YEARS, and are full of love and kindness. Que agredecido ellos.. and what an absolute pleasure to have them guide us to la cima. To visit this otherworldly site is truly a privilege as it's importance spans across many great mesoamerican civilizations y cultura Nahuatl.
The inactive volcano is 4120m or 13,517 feet above sea level. Above the treeline and close to the summit features severe and unpredictable weather, a suiting for the home for Dios Tláloc. The volcano hosts a maze of forest roads and winding trails - close to none of which are on maps. Going with a local is crucial for many reasons. We ascended through campos from the pueblo of Coatlinchán - a pueblo that used to be on the shore of Lago Texcoco. This is historically considered to be the 'original' path for the pilgrimage to the summit.
For thousands of years, Monte Tláloc has been widely regarded as the domain of Dios Tláloc, the god of rain. This is a very auspicious place, and the energy is palpable at the top. The lofty peak is home to "el templo de Tláloc": an important shrine to the Aztec civilization y cultura Nahuatl, and is known as the highest altitude archeological site in meso-america. I can only imagine what has occurred in this place over time. Absolutely incredible.
This was certainly a day to remember. Somehow i was able to summit the 6,500 foot ascent with some badly bruised ribs from just two days prior. There is no way i could cancel this plan and opportunity. I've been resting and I haven't ridden my bike since.
For me, learning the history and respecting the present cultural practices of the places i travel on two wheels is of the utmost importance - especially in Mexico. To respect the culture, the people, and the land is crucial. Past and present. I encourage you to do some research about this place, as well as with the Aztec gods.
For further reading, this research paper offers some in depth information about the scared Monte Tláloc, the concept of Tlálocan, and more. mavcor.yale.edu/mavcor-journal/ritual-ascent-mount-tlaloc-mexico (thanks to my partner Poli for finding this paper).
This year i've continued to climb mountains bigger than the last. Climbs that push the mind, body, and soul. This is now the biggest climb i've ever done on a bike. I will be processing this experience for some time, and i am excited to return again to ride with my new friends
-Cooper
Excerpt:
"Tlaloc materialized as rain-filled clouds, especially as cumulus forms that descended from the sky and rested atop mountain peaks. These clouds, gathering around high mountains, were part of the reason why Tlaloc was thought to dwell on Mount Tlaloc and the neighboring peaks. As the deity of sustenance, who controlled rain and hail, Tlaloc was responsible for the perennial agricultural cycles of trees, grass, and maize. While he was thought to inhabit all of the mountainous landforms that composed the Sierra Nevada range, Mount Tlaloc was his primary dwelling place. His mountain abode hosted weather patterns that were so distinct-partly because of its soaring altitude-that the deity communicated to the population below via clouds, rain, lightening, and storms.
While the Nahua of the Late Postclassic period were the last to venerate and worship at Mount Tlaloc before Spanish occupation, the mountain remained a prominent fixture of ritual activity well into the sixteenth century (Fig. 3).11 Inversely, objects dating to the Preclassic period (2000 BCE-300 CE) as well as to the city-state of Teotihuacan (100 BCE-500 CE) were unearthed during archaeological investigations conducted in the twentieth century, indicating that the mountain’s summit was a ritual location for numerous cultures across epochs. Many sixteenth-century chroniclers commented on the activities that culminated at the mountain’s summit, acknowledging that the meteorological conditions at the peak rendered it a sacred location for ritual activity. Dominican friar Diego Durán (ca. 1537-1588) in his documentation of Indigenous lifeways during early Spanish occupation of New Spain describes the meteorological phenomenon that occurred on Mount Tlaloc. Durán observed that "clouds become cold" and that "storms of thunder, lightning, thunderbolts, and hail" accumulated at the mountain’s peak. Sixteenth-century documentation and archaeological data describe a pilgrimage that culminates on Mount Tlaloc’s summit, but offer little detail about the ascent itself."

Commute 1123 Uncut Riding from Central Park back to Brooklyn over the Queensboro Bridge. One take, no cuts. I have a feeling these videos are waaaaay too long. My observation are the same. But when comes to ride a fixed gear, it is comfortable to dropping a seatpost a bit for comfortable reason, since you're backpedalling when braking.. this is my humble opinion..
