Look at your video at around the 5:10 area when you put the first chamber in, you will see your part tilt down close to 1/16". either your vice wasn't tight enough or the vice jaws were cock a bite. Put something in the open of the vice jaws the same width of the jaws griping the part your working on. This way the vice will close squarely.
I was trying to go light on the vice , I didn’t have anything of equal size to put in the left side of the vice. After the fact a number of ideas to even up the vice come to me. I did a lot of of things wrong thier for I learned a lot. Thanks just tim
@@kimber1958The big TRICK , is to REMEMBER to not make the same mistakes over and over !
'Must have blinked my eyes , or took a drink of coffee , & missed THAT ! - Though I did notice the discrepancy that got him off center . . . * I'll have to mention using ADJUSTABLE PARALELLS , or simply a screw jack to keep the vise jaws "SQUARE(ish)" !
@@georgewocosky I figured that out.
When you're trying to hit the CENTER of a round . . . you only have to KNOW just ONE "EDGE" - since you have NO DOUBT got some SLOP / BACKLASH in the cross feed screw , it will NEGATE the second edge being indicated - 'Hope that doesn't sound CoNfUsInG ! * If you move the cross feed in opposing directions with the INDICATOR against the vise , you'll see how much backlash you have by watching the NEEDLE as it begins to move . There are many ways to hit CENTER ! You can only rely on your DIALS , if you remove all the backlash , BEFORE dialing in to hit center ! Got it to work , that's what counts - - - you didn't KILL the project by making SCRAP ! "TA DA " !
I noticed that too.
Thanks Brother good to hear from ya
@@kimber1958 I didn't see the DIPPING PART at 5:10 - 'musta blinked , or took a swig of COFFEE ! ? You can EASILY fill the gap , to SQUARE THE JAWS , FOR AN EVEN GRIP . . . by using a SCREW JACK between the JAWS on the FAR SIDE ! A fine threaded jack would do the trick in a HURRY ! NO time for BOZO ! One of the toughest lessons to learn is , " It takes a lot of 'atta - boy's to make up for an OHHHH SHIT ! "
Excellent fix, Kimber. It'll last for years now. Cheers Tony
Great job repairing that lamp Kimber
👍👍👍👍👍👍😉😉
An excellent repair sir! Phil
Good to see you keeping busy Kimber. Cheers from downunder mate 👍
The left and right thread on the same bar is very cool. The drift looks great
👍👍👍👍😉😉😉😉
I'm half way through the vid - . . . What wilkbild said . . . AND . . . * If you want a better finish , cut down your feed rate - .006 per rev is pretty coarse ! ( .006 is fine for ROUGHING CUTS) . . . I'm guessing that your tool is not quite 'on center height' . . . Your dial should be right on the money ! You replaced the cross feed screw , & NUT ! ** Also : when you measure a longer cut , it's PRUDENT to measure each end , and center - to make sure you're not cutting a TAPER ! > > > BACK TO THE SHOW > > > THREAD DEPTH = is ALWAYS "HALF of the difference between the major & minor diameters . . . ( Subtract the minor from major diameter , & divide by 2 . ) > > > > Well , you managed to make a loose threaded 'thingy' !
At 16.27 you had .4944, shooting for .500, that is a little more half a thousand off. more like.0055 off.
lol the math major. I am not it felt wrong when I was saying it. I just never corrected it. Thank you for putting that out.
👍👍👍👍👍👍😉😉
Thanks Kev
This was great to watch, I must learn how to use threading
Just do it . Don’t worry about accuracy just work on making something that looks like threads.
I would not worry about time of your videos. Instead work on telling the story. Like I just got a tool and need to set it up and try it out so let's see how it goes. Instead of just jumping in to drilling a hole. We have know idea of why you are doing it for. Bring us along on your journey. I know you where a truck driver. To now self taught hobby machinist. That's cool. That's my 2 penny's worth. Hope it helps
That’s gigantic. Great advice thank you so much. That will be my focus.
We must learn about thread cutting, I am always impressed seeing you do it
nice one Kimber👍👍😉😉 atb Kev
spot on Kimber👍👍 atb Kev
Kimberzelik -- Do you have a Four Jaw Chuck ??? --- Jim
Yes
Is it more rigid ? I can't see the compound as being a problem at all. Unless you are pre-setting tools with the DRO. -Doozer
It's reputable no need to recheck if your making 10 studs. So it faster to make 10
The compound does move around during the heavier cuts any backlash can be sucked into the work
my lathe uses a D1-5 mount, and I did not think you could put a D1-5 chuck on a D1-6 spindle shows what I know!! Learn some thing new every day. Thanks
All I know is I have six lugs and when I buy a new chuck I ask for a D1-5 ready or get a D1-5 backplate. D1-5 and D1-11 has 6 studs. Or as I call them ( Lugs) Thanks for watching Randy
We would like to get a knurling tool, yours looks like a great kit with some very good information. This looks like a fun project
I believe it’ll be an exercise and patience. I tend to go way too fast and make lots of sticks.
I was wondering why no tail stock support. Made me jump out of my chair when that first thread cycle decided to climb over the cutting tool. 😢
No clearance for the tool the tool wants to run into the live Center so I just have to take very light cuts and finish it with a die on the smaller sizes three-quarter inch 1 inch stuff doesn’t seem to be a problem
@@kimber1958 I should have seen that. Thank you for letting me know
I made the knurling tool from Hemingway kits this past spring, and nothing was finished had to do all the radius milling. I learned alot and it works great. Just remember for the reamed holes do not drill them to size on the print go 1/64 under size then ream them out. Good luck!
Thanks , that was one of my biggest concerns
Good day Sir, You are Truly A Master Machinist My friend 😇👍🧐👌Be Well Cheers 🍻🍻
Thank you kindly

Nicely done Kimber atb👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 Kev

Kimber how much thicker is the new plate from the old one?
The compound sticks up about one and 7/8 of an inch from its mounting service to the bottom of the quick change to post. The new plate is about 0.050 shy of being the same height. I should really shim it up to the same height, but I can still get my tools on center regardless of the size difference. The plate is slightly thinner than the compound, maybe 0.050 The idea is to delete the compound for rigidity sake, and I also want to try to create a kind of tracing attachment on that plate. Thanks for coming along Kimber
Great shoutouts, the UA-cam community is great. Thanks for the mention
Any time
Arco @outlawedge is a hell of a guy! He took my under his wing when I first started my youtube channel and has helped me and supported my efforts and pushed me to go further! Awesome friend ! I subscribed to your channel this evening.
I cannot agree with you more one hell of a guy, one hell of a community
I'm with you Kimber on these subjects.... Well said.......Cheers Tony
Sweet! --Doozer
Hi, I'm the crazy guy that dropped off the Hendey lathe at Arco's last weekend, but for the record, I'm not the guy that tore it apart... I'm the middle man. Long story, but I didn't have space or time and i know Arco like old vintage machines and friends, and i'm vintage. Arco is one of the best guys someone could meet. It was a 15 hour drive for me and worth every minute just to see him and Heidi. He had his annual car show and invited me to be a judge. Maybe you've already seen some of his videos. I'll be posting some from my channel too. He's so nice i call him Arco Angel. That man would do anything to help someone. We communicate almost everyday. We both build cars, in fact we're both building sheet metal cars from scratch right now. Anyway, thanks for helping Arco. He will get that thing together and running. I enjoyed your video and subbed you tonight. I like machines and will be following you. I have a knee mill in my shop. It's a Bridgeport knock off and does most things I need to do. Lots of fixture building for my car right now. Anyway, this is too long, but Arco is worth spending a lot of time on! 🙂
Best of luck to y’all getting it together! 😊
Amen and thank you
*_Why aren't you posting the links to these channels in the description? This is the second time, no link._*
Thanks kimber i cannot say how much it means to me! You’re the best! ARCO -MN OUTLAW CUSTOMS outlaw edge UA-cam channel
I’m not sure how to spell moron but I sometimes fit that category. Maybe not a moron maybe just a lazy.
Great job on the jaws. It is a great idea to make the jaws now rather than wait until you need the vice
Thanks
I'm not sure if that is a keyed type chuck or key-less chuck your using, but if it's a keyless you don't tap with them. They are only self tightening in one direction, when you reverse rotation they will tend to open up. You tap with a key type chuck. Personally I don't power tap, I leave that to the more experienced guys. I think you learn more with hand tapping, there is a definite "feel" to it, especially when you get into the smaller sizes.
Thanks Justtim. I’m working on getting a real CHUCK
👍👍👍😉 O&O Kev
Kimber you may want to check the runout on that drill chuck
It is a very cheep Drill Chuck, It was all I could afford at the time. I’m gonna start watching the local auctions in my area as soon as I come up with some money for tooling. But I should be able to get some something at least decent. Thanks Earle C
Ok good. You just dont want to break a drill or tap
This is an interesting project. We always raise the knee but I have no idea if it is better than using the quill
So, you're using indicator to control cross slide movement cause you don't trust cheap Chinese lathe's accurasy. Am I right?
Right on
I believe you'd be a lot better served if you use the plastic face of the hammer rather than the rubber face, just bounce on that face. Best would be a lead hammer, no bounce there, or at least a dead blow hammer, basically the same thing.
Thanks Justtim
Never a good time when your work is moving on you! 😂
Thanks Brian

To me
It’s amazing to watch you turn into a young adult. Can’t wait to see you in the future and what you become.
That's a decent looking lathe. Note how big the base is on the tailstock, unlike the ridiculous mini lathes that have out of proportion center heights to bed width. A well proportioned lathe will have a minimum bed width that is 1.5 times larger than the center height.
You’ve given me quite a bit to think about.
