I need the wide toe box, but I need cushioning because my feet pads have disappeared.
Yikes, where did they go!? 🤷♀ My go to for transitioning is Altra or Topo. They have normal cushion systems similar to the modern running shoe brands. Also look at Lets Primal and Barebarics from BeLenka.
@@KatieBodyFix I was having so much trouble with huge blisters on the balls of my feet while hiking. A foot specialist said I have no fat on the bottom of my feet and I need cushioning. Thanks for replying.
I Relly want to smell them
I can move mine in a circle
No pain on ball of foot, but on the side of the foot, but not the edge.
I might actually treat this the same way as described in the video. Lots of ball rolling, mobilizing the bottom of the foot to start. There is a lateral arch too :) Sometimes super rigid footwear can overcorrect and put too much pressure on the outside of the foot. Try to stick with minimal footwear to avoid this.

I’ve been dealing with this issue since 2018 and this is the first video I’ve seen that’s explained exactly what’s going on in my foot. After going to countless doctors and even having surgery done now I’m in a bad way unfortunately. I ended up having a weil osteotomy to correct the dropped met head in my 2nd toe and a bone spur removed in my big toe. Both procedures have completely locked up both joints and caused arthritis according to multiple 2nd opinions I have gotten. And I still have the dropped metatarsal head!!! It actually feels even worse. I’m going to start to your recommended routine daily to see if it helps, but I’m nervous that between scar tissue and the fact that the joints are so locked up I won’t see much progress. Really regretting the surgery. One last thing - after surgery the ball of my foot was so swollen that my toes were floating off the floor and years later it still isn’t quite normal - my toes don’t lay completely flat and the tissue feels very bound up. Do you think these exercises could help with inflammation underneath in the ball of my foot?? Thanks so much!
Wow, I'm so sorry to hear this. How frustrating for you. When the metatarsal head is dropped then the toes will not be able to lay flat, so since that was never corrected and coupled with inflammation I assume this is why they still are floating a bit. Yes in theory these exercises should help with that. The biggest culprit here is footwear as that causes the hammertoes in the first place (for the most part). You should only be wearing zero drop shoes and functional / wide toe box (not just a wide width shoe). Metatarsal pads can help too to alleviate the pressure from the dropped met head and also improve metatarsal alignment and toe splay. If you need more help feel free to reach out Katie@ptbodyfix.com :)
I hope you're making money with feet like that.
I can't move the pinky toe without moving all the other toes together. What does that entail? Weak glutes?
Keep working on it, it will get easier. The pinky toe has its own abductor muscle so as you continue with your toe splay of all toes… that muscle should strengthen 😊

That toe ring though...very 🔥
It’s a bit outrageous that running super shoes (like all other modern shoes) also restrict the windlass mechanism…but no one seems to have a problem with this? I love my super shoes very much, but having now witnessed how much effort I have to put to bring my windlass mechanism to life during running in minimalist footwear … I wonder where and how the body compensates during shod running?
Hi there, unfortunately shoes alone will not fix years of wearing restricting footwear. Mechanics are altered from feet to hips from modern footwear and also from sitting In chairs. Thousands of years ago neither of these things were an issue and therefore most humans had a naturally moving foot propelled by… their own foot! 😂 now we start wearing shoes as toddlers and quickly those become tapered toe boxes with a heel to toe drop and very inflexible. I know for me it was about 36 years of this so it takes a while and specific foot exercises to get our foot back to a more natural state.
@@KatieBodyFix hehe absolutely…I can’t believe I have discovered something which was in my body all these years! I’m really fascinated by the improvement in shock attenuation I feel when I run forefoot. Feet are amazing!

Great video. This is just the info I've been looking for to try and lift my dropped metatarsal head even if it's just a fraction. My cause was Glute Med not firing when I walk. I will try toe spacers and foot strengthening as well to try and help. Thanks for your content.
That's great, thanks for sharing! Toe spacers are great for metarsal alignment :)
Your coming is 2 months old, what helped you? I just got diagnosed with dropped metatarsal head today. I never wear high heel shoes. I think my glute medius might not be firing. I wouldn't have made this connection except for your comment. The doctor said I have a high arch. He thinks I need custom orthotics.
High arches are typically less flexible and therefore do not require an orthotic. Most feet also do not require orthotics and would benefit more from strengthening of them. Metatarsals become dropped from weakness in the intrinsic foot muscles, inability for arches to engage, and shoes that are not zero drop… this means from high heels to popular running shoes. The foot to hip have a direct connection however we could never say a dropped metatarsal is from a weakened glute med.
Thanks for the info. Maybe the podiatrist will have a different opinion than the doctor. I first got the pain where you showed in the video. I had been walking much more than normal. The pain moved to being in my toes. The Dr took X-rays. I asked what I could do in the meantime. He told me to get an arch support. Usually I cannot feel arch supports or they are hitting my foot in the wrong place. About flexibility, I may have ehlers-danlos hypermobile type. The doctor said there is no genetic test for this type. My ankles as well as other joints are overly flexible. I can stick out my legs and touch the soles of my feet together. If I fold my leg, I can turn my foot so that the sole faces upward. The foot with the worst pain has a heel spur
Interesting, a diagnosis of EDS does change things and I have had patients get tested for it. Either way it’s really just a label for what you already know: hypermobile joints. If your podiatrist measures a significant navicular drop then a orthotic might be necessary. Or if it’s not too severe and you don’t have pain in the ankle/foot then a posting to tilt your foot into more neutral alignment will not impede your metatarsal alignment. Orthotics generally have a heel stack to them and that puts more pressure on your metatarsal heads > leading to “dropped” met heads.
Just here for the splay lol

Plus, I have over pronation feet. My sneakers all go out to outside of my sneakers
I cannot find the best cushioned sneakers and wondering what you suggest for planter fascitis
Hi there, plantar fasciitis is often a symptom of weakened intrinsic foot muscles. Exercises in this video would be helpful as well as the short foot exercise. Cushioned shoes exacerbate symptoms as they continue to weaken the foot and not allow the foot to feel the ground. As a transition shoe, I recommend Altra. My favorite minimal shoe is Be Lenka. Ptbodyfix.com/shop 😊
I hoped you can answer, i have been wearing 5 finger shoes for years ,i did alot of barefoot walking until my husband got upset at having to take slivers out of my feet.i developed pain where you speak of. i dont understand what happen.
Hi there, I'd probably need a bit more information. Like when did you stop wearing 5 finger shoes, and what did you start wearing instead? when did the pain occur?
The knees should stay in place when pronating, or eventually you'll have to replace the joints.
Hi there, not sure if you watched the video or you can just watch your own limb but in what’s known as “pronation expression” there is a rotation from the foot to the hip and even tilt of the pelvis. If the knee doesn’t allow this movement then the hip will not rotate either. All are necessary for efficient foot to hip mechanics. If you have too much motion coming from the foot or hip causing excessive pronation then you can lose control and therefore the knee dives in. You see this often with people with bunions, loss of foot strength and weakened hips. Purpose of the video is to create and find greater control of your foot to hip mechanics so as you said, things like knee replacements are less likely in the future.
I went down the minimalist road but unfortunately my dropped metatarsal won and it got too painful to continue in my vivos and lems. Need that cushion now to avoid pain. Also went back to orthotics but I’m looking to see if I can find some middle ground.
I transition most people into Altra or Topo sneakers first as they have typical cushion still. Anything with heel drop, and that includes orthotics, is what can exacerbate dropped metatarsals as you are standing on a decline. Check out metatarsal pads instead of an orthotic to get the pressure off the metatarsal head instead of the orthotic which is actually putting more pressure on it.
Thanks for the speedy response! I’ll try met pads alone. Any type you prefer?
