    Greetings to you Rick and Jan. Always so good to see a video from you. It really encourages me to stay outside at MyLittleJungle to take care of my orchids and plants. I actually forgot to write a comment after watching this video. I was outside tending my orchids when I watched it. But anyway, I actually have a question for you Rick…… So I just received an orchids named “Prosthechea Chacaoensis” I don’t know how am I going to do with it. I have no luck on growing this type of orchids. I know it is a family with oncidium, and I can’t grow oncidium here at my place. I am in Texas Zone 9. What medium do you think I should use to make it grow and thrive all year round? Thank you so much in advance for your recommendation and help. 🤗🤗🤗

    • @rickl.orchids
      @rickl.orchids  5 місяців тому +1

      Thanks Leah.. ..I have no experience with Prosthechea Chacaoensis...doing a bit of research......its native to Central America, the West Indies, Colombia, Venezuela, and southern Florida........seems to be a warm growing orchid....its a epiphytic orchid growing on trees.....I prefer lava rock, pea gravel, mounting, etc.....for growing my orchids.......If I had it,.. and was in Texas.. zone 9.....I would probably use pea gravel, but thats my choice...I grew all my oncidiums in pea gravel and lava rock....they did very well, and grew large, and bloomed often....it allowed lots of airflow.....and I could soak them.
      .if you prefer bark or moss......I dont see any issues with that.......I bet they will do fine in any of those medias......

    • @LeahPurtee

    Mr Rick, I also have a variegated Sogo Vivien that’s not doing well. It has a flower spike that’s stalled and not pushing growth. Its roots are dying and now the leaves are suffering. I have mine in lava rock, using cal-mag, Epsom, fish +seaweed fertilizer, and orchid better bloom. My water (city water) starts off at 600-700 ppm without adding the above ferts; I hope its Not burning the roots but all the other Phals are blooming and pushing new roots.

      ...if your using calmag.....dont use epson salts.......and no need for bloom fertilizers.....most orchids dont and cant use excess phosphous....if anything is causing root issues it may be the fish/ seaweed fertilizer......if its for soil plants dont use it......if that is all you have......use it in very tiny amounts.....
      ..cutting the spike will only rob the orchid of mobile nutrients......let it finish blooming, and absorb the spike if it wants......cutting it off wont save it.....it will only take away valuable nutrients it really needs now.......when I water......I soak them for 20 minutes.......then let them dry for several days and repeat.......good luck, let me know if I can be of further assistance.
