I love your confidence in how strong your orchids are due to how the nutrients are administered... It is amazing to learn from one another in the orchid community... There's just no substitute for good old natural sunlight! I sure wish I could grow outside like that. Unfortunately, I live in Central Texas and it is just so blazing hot in the summer time, i don't think they would be able to take it. Today, I just have to tell you-- I am so glad you're back on UA-cam! I know I said it on your first video back, but Everytime I get a notification, I'm just so grateful you're back. I'm not sure I've heard Jan's voice before, so that was such a nice surprise. I know you spoke about her often in the past about becoming a nurse and health and etc, but I'm not sure I've heard her in one of your videos! But what I couldn't help but think while I was watching today was how positive, gentle, and kind the two of you are. Ive always watched you because you spoke about fertilizing in a way I could understand... And honestly, I liked your voice and speech pattern so I just found your videos relaxing beside being so informative. But the 2 of you together was just heartwarming. I wish you both only good things. What genuinely good ppl.

    Thank you Jan.
    Rick Your videos are so down to earth whether it’s hearing about hose rinsing the lava rock,sharing water amongst plants, sterilizing everything UN necessarily … all just common sense. CALCIUM being the BIG factor.
    I ‘ve adapted/ changed my orchid care years ago bc of what I have learned from you.. I give mine calcium a lot & ur right, they need it to be healthy & strong. It’s a simple thing to do.
    One other thing, that dear birdsong is lovely to hear but I can’t identify what bird is the opera singer in ur yard but he’s sure happy!

    So nice to meet you Jan! Hello Mr. Rick!
    It's a beautiful day to be outside enjoying the Orchids. Everything looks amazing 😍.
    I'm going to try my hand at growing another Cattleya. The Corona Green Genie. My first one ,Potinara Hawaii Charisma is doing well. I potted it up in river rock and a few pieces of large bark. Grew it from a bare root seedling 🌱. I'm just a windowsill grower. Closest I get to putting them outside is opening the window for them.

  • @sjusovare
    @sjusovare 5 місяців тому +2

    Hello.
    The recommendation to not share water between pots is not so much about fungal or bacterial infections, which are indeed induced by poor growing conditions and that a healthy plant can fight of...
    It's about viruses, and no matter how healthy a plant is, if it's viral it won't get rid of it and is an innoculum for the rest of the collection even when asymptomatic.
    A viral plant won't necessarily show symptoms at first, but they will slowly fade over a period of several years, and a minimal stress will prove fatal.
    It's not so much an issue at a personal level, one can always throw and start a new collection from scratch if it gets viral. When one starts swapping or selling their plants with others, it becomes problematic ...
    We've had (and still have) the problem with the genera pleione : 20 years ago, some plants were showing random discolored spots on the flowers, which would not necessarily occur the next year. Some were worried it seemed characteristic of a viral behavior, but every growers and sellers were claiming those were the result of poor cultivation, or stressful climatic conditions. Results : everyone has swapped, sold, crossed, sown some of those at some point, and in doing so, everyone has introduced the Flower Breaking Virus in their collection (which is now identified as a potyvirus). And now there isn't a commercial stock which is not contaminated, we've lost dozens of grexes, some which cannot be recreated because the parent species just don't exist anymore in cultivation. Worse, we found in field testing that contamination occurs not only through pests, but also though water and even by leaves rubbing, and the cherry on top, we successfully transmitted it to other generas, namely phalaenopsis, oncidiums, miltonias and cattleyas.
    I could accommodate myself of a few discolored spots on flowers some years, if it were only that, but the plants do get weaker and weaker through time.
    The same issue occured in the past with ORSV and CymV virus, was the lesson learnt? Sadly, no.
    Orchids are indeed tough plants, but that argument is flawed because it doesn't take into consideration that if it's true for wild orchids, it doesn't apply to plants in cultivation, none of the orchids we grow would have survived in the wild.
    Most are hybrids which have been bred only for the showiness of their flowers, without any regard for their general fitness for wild conditions (which is why some will literally kill themselves overblooming)
    As for botanic species, the stock we have has been grown artificially for decades. In the wild, only 1 or 2 seedlings of a whole seedpod would survive, in nurseries we get 80% survival, which is good for cultivation, but we should not delude ourselves into thinking those plants are tough, they are not wild survivors and most of them would not have passed natural selection...

    • @rickl.orchids
      @rickl.orchids  5 місяців тому

      .....then what is the issue from sharing water......if not spreading disease?

    • @sjusovare
      @sjusovare 5 місяців тому

      @@rickl.orchids the issue is spreading diseases, only the problematic diseases in question are not the fungal and bacterial infections that a well cultivated plants can fight off, but the viral ones that it cannot.
      Sharing water passes the viruses from one pot to the others, regardless how healthy and well cultivated the plants seems, and since we have no way to know which plant is viral and which is not, it's a high risk of contaminating the whole lot, even more when you regularly add new plants.
      One can be willing to risk infecting their own collection for practical reasons (it's a hassle when watering to be careful to it), but it's a valid choice only if that person never swap or sell plants from that stock, because then they would also risk to unwillingly contaminate someone else's collection.
      Also one particular plant might resist to some extent to a virus and keep on living with it, but the next plant might not have the same resilience

    So awesome to hear (and see - hey, Rick) that both of you are doing so good. 6 years cancer free is amazing, Jan! I think I never really commented much before the 4 year break in videos but I'll try to leave comments now whenever I can. Both my cattleyas and the Phalaenopsis loved it when I had them in clay pots. I'll definitely do more clay (and wood baskets), and less plastic now, as my new collection is slowly growing. I also started adding calcium carbonate to the feed. Will see how well that works out. I love all your videos about fertilizing, because you have a great way of explaining, but it just does not want to stick with my brain. I'm a hopeless case, lol.

    Hi Rick, What else can cause leaf tip die back besides calcium deficiency? I use MSU fertilizer and CalMag when I water. When I flush, I use my well water, which veries from 60-100ppm.
    Here are a few other facts, I use mostly self watering pots because my climate is extremely dry. The average annual percentage of humidity is 0%, yes that's correct. We average only 8 inches of precipitation (rain + snow) per year. I grow strictly indoors and run a humidifier 24/7 in my grow area and still can only achieve 30-35% humidity. I use mostly a combination of leca, lava rock, and pumice for media, although I do have some orchids in rePotme All Purpose Monterey Bark Imperial Orchid Mix.

    • @rickl.orchids

      ........thats a very good question.....if you read the label on your MSU....what is the % of Nitrogen vs the % of calcium?.....you want them close to the same %.....adding the calmag will help offset it.......but it may not be enough......other than that, too much nutrients or salts can cause leaf tip burn.......Does your well water have a lot of iron in it by chance?......

    • @sheiselwilliams1
      @sheiselwilliams1 5 місяців тому

      @rickl.orchids My MSU fertilizer has...
      13% Nitrogen as 0.17% Ammoniacal Nitrogen and 12.5% Nitrate Nitrogen
      3% Available Phosphate
      15% Soluble Potash
      8% Calcium
      2% Water Soluble Magnesium
      0.177% Iron
      and minute amounts of Boron, Copper, Manganese, Molybdenum, and Zinc.
      The CalMag solution I use with the MSU has...
      1% Nitrate Nitrogen
      5% Calcium
      1.5% Magnesium
      0.1% Iron
      So total between the two is...
      14% Nitrogen and 13% CaIcium.
      I mix them with distilled water. I do also add some kelp with the fertilizer.
      My well water that I use for flushing is filtered and has extremely little iron. On the drinking water test strips that I use, iron is 0
      total hardness 25
      total alkalinity 20
      carbonate 20
      pH is 6.6
      and all other readings are 0 or next to nothing.

      @rickl.orchids Rick I don't know how much you'll find. Cory over at Aquarium co op talked about it a little bit. I don't know if he stumbled over my channel, read one of my comments, or maybe came up with the idea independently. I don't know. All I know is i've been trying to figure this out longer than Corey, or any of the three of us have had a channel.
      Recently, I thought maybe it's just the aquarium water by itself, and i'm imagining things. But when I boosted the dosages, the phalanopsis responded, and nothing except may be the fiddle leaf fig went downhill.
      People say i'm crazy But most of my plants say just the opposite.

    • @rickl.orchids
      @rickl.orchids  5 місяців тому +2

      .....good question......scale is a tough pest to deal with, its probably one of the only times I would use a insecticide on orchids......try neem oil first......it really works well on scale and is absorbed by the plant as well....and keeps them from restarting....its also organic and wont harm the orchids ..
      ...if that didnt work, ....try a spray with Malathion.....easy to find at any garden center......Many insecticides can harm orchids.....so try the neem oil first.......its great stuff. Spray them and then wipe off as many as you can the next few days...
      ... Calcium is vital to an orchids proper growth and really keeps them tough and pest resistant.....so keep them supplied with calcium all the time.
