The episode when he is using the disabled tank for his firing position was familiar to me even though I have not read the book. It appears in another of these memoires on yt but I cannot recall which one. About 35 years ago I met an old Wehrmacht soldier in Munich and chatted with him for a couple of hours. Although he did not go into detail, he did open my eyes. He changed my perception of what was happening in those times.

I was reading Alderberger book,amazing.Eastern front was a horor never seen before and after in human history.

Great narration, it just goes to show that no matter what side the soldier is on, it is much the same, just trying to survive the day.

I've heard in various places that the story of Russian soldiers being sent up without weapons is a myth. Also the whole idea of the human wave as well, apparently the German generals who wrote autobiographies after the war were very keen on not acknowledging the fact that they were outmanoeuvred, hence the birth of the "human wave" thing.

I'm really enjoying this one, it's absolutely unfiltered and brutal, a truly honest account of war. It's not surprising that so few survivors talk about it. My late grandfather served in tanks in North Africa, Italy and Northwest Europe and he did talk about his experiences. Sadly, he died when I was only four so never really got the chance to talk with him about it all. My mother was told stories but she is of a somewhat softer nature than me and when asked about the stories he told her, she simply says that it's just a long list of descriptions of how people died, and refuses to elaborate any further.

I am a Boer from South Africa. My ancestors had a very good relation with the German people. During the Anglo Boer War the Boers used Mauser 7×57 rifles. When WW 1 broke out there was a rebellion by the Boers not wishing to attack Deutch West Africa. I myself also have an admiration for your people. My son is married to a South African German girl. Her maiden name is Lilje. We affectionatly call our German citizens " Springbuck Germans". Please keep up your readings, I enjoy it immensely.

This book does a great job of showing how the sniper in German WWII doctrine was a mix of what we'd call Designated Markman activities as well as standard Sniper employment. It also does an excellent job of showing why the use and application of combat clothing is always changing. Some great stuff!

Excellent! The narration really brings the story to life. Erskine Childers mentioned in this episode was shot by firing squad in the Irish civil war. He shook the hand of each member of the firing squad before his execution. Years later, his son, also Erskine, became president of Ireland.

Another great episode, this type of commentary would discourage the uninformed from glorifying war,, this type of killing is very personal and traumatic!! The confirmation of Meth being used is very startling, I have heard of this, but this is the first time that I have heard of this type action actually occurring!! Wow!! I at one time thought of trying out for sniper, but my job wasn’t infantry,, I don’t think I could’ve done that job for long! My brain gave me that idea as I always scored “ Top Gun “in my Battalion when we qualified with the M-2 Browning gun, also individual marksmanship I was always awarded the expert rifle badge this was a mark of pride for me, I would challenge my platoon to beat my score they could have a weekend pass, I was seldom beaten!! Combat is always a personal experience and I wouldn’t want anyone to think that it was pleasant or anything! No one should ever have to go through that!! Cheers Brother! Till the next time!!

His unit is having a difficult time in late '43. No matter, I'm certain their fortunes will improve in the summer of '44. In all seriousness, watching his friend die slowly, unable to help, in such close quarters, how awful. However long this sniper lived, I'm sure he could recall this vividly even on his last day alive.

The meeting with Jellicoe's widow hits hard. Growing up in North America the German and Japanese side of things was largely hidden from us until relatively recently. Not via censorship but due to the longstanding social custom that if you were looking into anything related to wartime Germany, you were up to no good and likely a closet anti-semite. WW2 education was mostly being told "they were bad, we were good, we got em thats all you need to know!" And then show the usual clip of a US ship firing its guns with the flag waving, then cut to tanks and stuka sirens, then Hitler yelling something, marching GIs, and finish off the clip with Eisenhower on parade somewhere. But the truth is far from that and moments like that really depict the civility and respect that existed between the UK and Germany pre 1939 and post 1945.

I don't know how these guys did it. Knowing you're the one hunted, losing so many buddies, the war. These special people, intelligent, brave, mostly wasted good men. Been on the Chicago sub. Interesting hearing about the type 9, most stories are type 7, better depth, new torpedo room, good speed underwater. Fascinating machines.

How history repeats itself

Excellent story- my grandfather was a motor cycle driver and died in Berlin shortly before the Russians over-ran Berlin. His last name was Heide. I would really like to learn more about him but everyone has long since passed away. In addition and what is most astonishing is that my other grandfather's(Franz Reimers) brother- Heinrich Reimers was the tank driver for Wittmann and died with him in France. I will definitely keep watching your episodes- PS: Just got done reading "Panzer Leader" by Heinz Guderian! If you can recommend any good books, please do so! All the best, Karl
