I've really enjoyed listening to this series while building a model of a Type VIIc U-boat. It really gives context to what these guys went through, and what they achieved under very adverse conditions. Your decision to narrate this book yourself was absolutely the right thing to do! It gives it so much more authenticity and impact than AI ever could!!
I'm not sure if you consider yourself as a historian, but I certainly do! You have clearly put in a lot of work and time in the archives to make sure this story is as accurate as possible, and I thank you for that! These U-boat crews deserve to have their stories told correctly.
On a side note, I recently visited the gulf coast of Texas for work. While dining at a seaside restaurant with my workmates and watching all the oil freighters in the gulf, I mentioned that this was a prime U-boat hunting ground during WW II. They had no idea that the German U-boat's operated in the gulf of Mexico, or off the American coast at all! This is why your channel is so important, it helps tell the stories of people who may be lost to history forever.
    Thank you!!

About 2 weeks ago I found the English version of Iron Coffins in my father in laws pile of books. He was a submariner for 26 years. He did several deployments on a spadefish. I couldn't find the time at home to read it with two young children running around so I decided to see if I could find an audio book version to listen to at work. I just wanted to say thank you for using your actual voice. So many WW2 channels are AI voices and they ruin A LOT of pronunciations and also lack any sort of emphasis what so ever. I cannot thank you enough for all the work you've put in to make this available for us. Also your corrections, translations and additional context to the story are invaluable. Thanks again.

Perhaps some thirty five years ago I was privileged to be a dinner guest of Dr Lambert of Burck-Sur-Mer, France. As the conversation was flying around the table, he quietly told me of his war-time experiences when he found himself, for reasons I know not, in a cattle-car headed for the dreaded concentration camp, Buchenwald. Unlike yer man in the narrative, he did manage to free himself, by similar actions I assume, and successfully and escape the train. After fleeing the railroad until at distance he felt safe, he told me he took the most momentous decision of his life and risked knocking on the door of a French farmhouse.
That was his story, Pretty major I thought at the time, and still do for that matter.

    A remarkable achievement!
Thank you for bringing this truly
    amazing testament to our ears.
The narration was perfectly rendered, adding a personal touch
that made you feel you were there.
It is fortuitous, that given the mortality rate of the German Submariners, that someone as
articulate and descriptive as Captain Herbert should survive to
    recount his experiences.
War at Sea is obviously hazardous,
but the submariner is especially vulnerable. The bombardment by
    depth charges and other bombs,
the everpresent danger of hull implosion and being stuck on the
    Ocean floor must have required
    incredible fortitude.
    The ingenuity and resourcefulness
in making repairs in terrible circumstances defies explanation.
It would seem Herbert and his shipmates benefited from good
fortune that so many of his other
    Submarine Comrades did not.
    Of course, an incredible account
of War Conflict like "Iron Coffins"
    is the best Anti-War statement
    possible. Regardless of what you
believe and are fighting for, War
    destroys pretty much everything.
I am very glad that Captain Herbert
    survived his Ordeal and eventually
found a new life in the US.
After what he survived, I hope that
    much happiness found his way.
Thank you Trench Diaries for this
    engrossing Series.

Well Trenchie, we have come to the end of our hero's adventure! When did we start on this adventure together? How many months ago did I first listen to the first episode done using the A.I. voice? I am so glad that you listened to myself and others, begging for you to read this story in person. 😊 You were hesitant at first, worried that we wouldn't understand your accent and that you might mispronounce words! 😊 As I said at the time, I would far rather listen to you mispronounce a word or two, knowing that you would eventually pronounce the word correctly, unlike the AI voice which would keep making the same mistakes.
Nowadays, your narration is so good that if I am not careful, you lull me off to sleep. Not that this is boring, it's just that the episodes turn up in my phone at 2 or 3 in the morning when I should be sleeping. 😮. I have enjoyed the series and your editorial comments at the end of each episode have been a great bonus that are often missing from professionally produced videos.

Damn, that post-war post-scriptum was as captivating if not more than the war narration. Had no idea how bad the post-war had been for German soldiers in the West. Were many inducted into the foreign legion? How long did they end up wasting in the French camps?

I'd have to look up the numbers of legion joiners, but it is safe to say that there have been a few. The legion to this day is singing select Wehrmacht songs, so you can imagine what impact the war's end had had. I also found it interesting to see how some POWs were treated in the West. It was unexpected, to say the least.

I guess after the war the German people needed some heros for their moral. I think much of this story is to satisfy that need. And has been embellished in parts for that purpose.

    • @TrenchDiaries
      @TrenchDiaries  Місяць тому

I'm not really sure that is the case. The book was first released in 1969, when the war was long gone and the sentiment regarding the war was very critical. Heroism as such is pretty much frowned upon in German ever since. Besides, there are many prison break stories of allied soldiers that are far more crazy, I'd think, no?

Once again...a man of consumate skill and determination...and huge good fortune!! However, there is not the breadth of vision that we saw from the gunnery officer from Bismark of the last diary...though that's not surprising perhaps as he was held tightly within the ranks of his submariner comrades, and hadn't had the opportunity to visit England or had that more open view of life generally.
I'm finding it remarkable that sense that it was perfectly correct to be in a war and kill almost indescriminately by just following orders that all your diarists held to....but then if one knows a little of the history of European countries, from time to time thay have all been at it....and obviously America (as an example) still feels justified to do similar at it's whim.
Thank heavens for the stability since then but we may yet rue the political lurchings to the right that we see all over. Thanks for this. Very insightful and interesting. I'm very grateful.

Happy you liked the memoir! I find it interesting to see the differences between the individual accounts. Burkard aboard Bismarck was also born from nobility, so his upbringing and education was different from the others - no judging, just facts - and it shows. But they have one thing in common: they all wanted to serve, which they did.

@@TrenchDiaries Mmm...but service to what? Ultimately to the death and destruction...of others. Using the example of Americans..."thank you for your service" is often heard when they speak to veterans and if they served in the second world war it's a valid thing to say perhaps...but now? Recent conflicts created by them have destroyed the lives of millions right around the world...and their backing of the Zionists in Palestine (as an example) profits only the arms manufacturers who are largely the creators of all wars nowadays. At what point does a soldier say no?...and why are they there in the first place? Reacting negatively through personal responsibility in the German military services would obviously be frowned upon in those days!!...but so many obviously thought the fight justified. These diaries raise so many questions!!

First of all: thanks for this. A humongous effort and a story well told.
Werners story sounds kind of familiar, compared to others who described their experiences. From an individuals point of view I can sort of understand it, but the amount of complaining that the Germans did after their capture is, to me, more a sign of how entitled they still were, even after losing the war, than a sign of gross mistreatment by the allies.
Rheinwiesen? Try looking up how many Soviet soldiers were captured by the Wehrmacht and how many survived their imprisonment. Try looking up what the Germans did to gypsies, gays, mentally handicapped, socialists/communists and jews. Rheinwiesen was incompetence, no carefully planned and executed genocide. Don't let some 'Ewiggestrigen' (those who still revere what happened in the past) tell you sob stories.

The point is not to weigh the suffering of one group against that of another. The point is to hear the story of a man as told from his point of view at the time. No judgement, no hindsight.
