Starter guide to easy, low cost winter sowing | Part 1 - the CLASSIC method
Grow stronger plants with winter sowing! This is my favorite method of sowing seeds - it is low cost, easy to start, and easy to maintain. It uses your climate (wherever you are!) and Mother Nature does the grunt work so that you grow hardy plants for your garden.
This video is a comprehensive guide to the CLASSIC method of Winter Sowing as created by Trudy Geissle Davidoff. Join me as I walk you through winter sowing containers, soil needs, seed selection and spacing, timing tips container setup and placement, and troubleshooting tips for the process. What seeds will YOU start in December?

    Just learned about winter sowing late last winter, and I am excited to try it out. I have a dozen native wildflowers that should germinate well with this method, and it will free up grow lights for lisianthus and ornamental oregano, among other things. Your video is full of great tips and ideas - thanks!

    Very good tutorial, thank you for sharing it. Question: After the seeds are planted in a container, is it necessary to keep that container outdoors or can the container be stored inside an unheated garage or barn for the winter? My thought is that until the seeds germinate and need sunlight there's really no need for them to be outdoors. As long as the soil stays damp and cold then the stratification requirements should be met. Once the seeds begin to germinate they can then be moved outdoors to get sunlight and moisture. Does this sound correct? Thank you.

    • @Joyfulfarmer
      @Joyfulfarmer 7 годин тому

      Sure! That should work out just fine. I would just check the moisture levels now and then. And depending on your last frost date, I’d make sure they are outside as it gets closer and as the days get longer right before spring. Happy growing and thanks for watching! 💚🌱

      @@shareathought769 there are ways to get around it with winter sowing…aluminum foil pans work fine. You could also put a layer of wax paper between the soil and the plastic container. Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts! 💚🌱

      You show many containers to use but from my experience and observation of others they may not be the best for every area. I’m Z5a and our last 2 winters were extremely warm. What happens is the seeds germinate too soon and freeze and with all the rain some rotted. This year I set them on the east side of house and they did well. Some used large tubs with individual small pots with little success. The trick is to have a good balance of soil to air so they have enough moisture and remain frozen until it’s time. Many dried out. The weather changes are making garden tricky. I wonder if just using an old fashioned cold frame would be the same, but would need to monitor lid on hot days.
