I followed your steps and planted onions for the first time. I am using a hybrid seed local from a Japanese company which is supposed to be storage onions. Last year, I planted onions from sets in Nov and harvested them in June. They didn't store well and that was so sad. I wanted to save them, so I did the hard work of sorting and cutting up half rotten onions to freeze. I don't ever want to do that again! I am thinking about growing leeks too and trying to harvest through out the year instead of growing so many onions which are hard to store in a hot humid climate.

@@jewelskitchen thank you for sharing! I hope it works out well for you! Sets are my least favorite way to grow onions. Leeks are great! That is such a great idea! I’ll direct sow some soon and I tend to just over-sow and harvest them here and there to thin them.

What do you think about using egg shells, coffee grounds and Epsom salt to the garden?

I think they can be helpful depending on what you are trying to accomplish with them! 🙂 Epsom salt can be a good additive for tomatoes in moderation. I have used coffee grounds to keep ants off of plants that tend to have aphids or for making soil slightly more acidic, and my mom pulverizes eggshells to add calcium to the soil. I have always heard a layer of eggshells keep slugs at bay, too.
