If the CPA firms are worried about declining enrollment in accounting, they have no one to blame but themselves. Overworking and underpaying employees is a sure-fire way to drive prospective people away. Not too hard to figure out.

In Roman times many slaves did accounting and bookkeeping jobs. Public Accounting is just a modern version of that. Between outsourcing, AI, and the horrible work / life balance why would you even consider this career? This is coming from a 31 year old with a bachelor’s in Accounting.

in 20 years i believe accounting will be completely AI...the reason is that anything with standardized rules (think GAAP...etc) can be programmed and will therefore be a candidate for AI.

  • @JRod-p07

AI will make most of the work CPAs do irrelevant. Only high-end clients with complex tax returns or audit requirements will need CPAs. Also, younger people aren’t motivated to go into accounting seeing how many jobs get outsourced to India & Philippines. There’s going to be a lot of people that will lose whatever money they put into the partnerships, etc. because no one will buy them out. Don’t forget CPA firms are basically a Ponzi scheme, so they need new people coming in to buy them out.

I like this attitude. Yes it's boring, tedious and the tax seasons suck but there is an opportunity to earn a good salary since nobody wants to do this. In the past 2 years I have gone on 7 interviews and all of them offered me well over $100k.

I double majored in Finance and Accounting. I graduated with a B.S. with 153 hours (way before the 150 hour requirement). Passed the CPA on my 2nd try and currently uncertified. Never worked for one of the public accounting giants. There are plenty of jobs in the accounting industry. If work/life balances are important - look at Federal, State & local government positions. You'll never get rich, but you won't burn yourself out either. Looking back, I wouldn't spend any effort on an undergrad Finance program. If finance is your target, look for a Masters at one of the top MBA schools - Wharton, Stanford, Harvard, etc. Cost Accounting ( See DCAA) is a great audit and financial analyst training ground. Tax is a building block - you can get real experience in tax just through HR Block. The big firms with their audit teams need people who are detectives and who understand accounting theory. If you truly want to be in public accounting - you must be a detective and a people person and understand when people are trying to con you; otherwise there are many, many non-public accounting jobs out there that need people with number processing skills. The undergrad accounting education environment does NOT prepare one for success - it teaches you how to pass a difficult test. If you really want to succeed as a CPA, you must be able to write coherently. The written questions on the exam must stay. If you want to learn business - simply work in a large retail store environment before beginning any MBA program. The bottom line: Being a CPA means you have a very wide range of skills, experiences, and fortitude to provide a client with accurate, meaningful and sometimes negative advice on possible choices of action in any given situation. You also need to ensure that your advice will stand the test of the court room.

Something that also helped my career was working at a big 4. When I left to go to industry, pretty much every person interviewing me seemed to have only care about that. Even recruiters representing me were super happy about it because that’s apparently what a lot of companies were looking for. This was also before I had a CPA. I have a CPA now, but felt the big 4 experience made things so much easier for me to get jobs. This whole time, I was thinking I could go through my career without a CPA, but realize that I just have to get it. Can’t imagine being a controller of a company and not having a CPA. That just sits wrong with me in my opinion, but I know that’s possible.

There will always be human accountants, but fewer of them. Some of that will be driven by demographics. The real tell in the Big 4 firms is if (or when) everyone gets a dedicated AI agent assistant (as opposed to a pooled resource). Employees will tune their agents and essentially train their potential replacements. All will not be replaced, but many will. The WEF is composed of the largest, wealthiest, and most powerful business entities and governments. Its 2025 future jobs report shows accountants and auditors as one of the largest job loss occupations from 2025-2030. An AI center larger than most of Manhattan is under construction. An apocalypse is not coming, but the herd will be thinned. People cannot “move up” into a position that no longer exists and cannot remain in one that they trained an agent to do.

The experience requirement should be abolished unless the states start regulating this experience. This is a joke! Someone with 20 years of industry experience cannot become a CPA while someone with 1000 hours of public can. It's this ridiculous clinging to the status quo that is killing this profession.
