EA Sports WRC 23 pre-launch (physics) analysis
Thank you for making this. I came from RBR and DR2.0 made me quit racing games. I am getting a wheel soon and I will be returning to RBR. Codemasters rant incoming: I have a strong opinion about Codemasters. They have a history of faking realism. They bought Operation Flashpoint the most realistic military simulation ever - squad-based AI, real ballistics, 1st + 3rd person infantry that can, drive transport vehicles, command tanks, fly aircraft, walk across an entire island with multiple towns, and from the main menu you could use a mission editor with its own scripting language. Codemasters turned that masterpiece into a linear story-driven first person shooter where you control a squad through a series of scripted scenarios. For fans of the original game it was a "_do you think us fools?_" kinda move. Bohemia went on to make Armed Assault (ArmA, for the public) and Virtual Battlefield Systems (VBS, for the military) and dominate that niche. In 2012, they released the fourth consecutive annual F1 game in which they had made extremely incremental realism improvements. Come on now, this is the officially licensed F1 game, and it is developing a thriving sim-racing scene. In the same year, they released a sequel to the epic Dirt 3... Dirt: Showdown? That's when I realised they were not aiming for driving simulation. Despite their pedigree in creating the most highly rated and, we assumed, realistic sim racing games, Codemasters had an internal mindset of, "We make games, not sims,". This is common in the games industry. In reality, that approach is analogous to constructing a tool out of plastic rather than metal - it cuts costs, and operates fine within the design constraints, and the customer doesn't complain. However, when you have a near-monopoly on the racing sim market, and you own the rights to F1, and drivers winning races online are getting picked up by professional teams IRL - you choose metal, not plastic. Racing is fun. Events, challenges, trials, courses, online - that's fun. Give us a realistic car, and we will create the fun if you'll allow it. Codemasters are afraid a realistic car will make it too hard for some people. They should actually do the hard part, make a real physics simulation, and keep their fake physics as a difficulty option. Instead, they chose to fake realism in a manipulative attempt to please racing fans while clutching onto their 💰💰
I find the tarmac to feel kinda numb, it to me feels like there's too much grip, especially on the older cars and the FFB especially on tarmac feels super numb and not very helpful. And I also report the spinning out pretty much randomly on some stages and cars.
Yes, those are all common critique. Can’t argue with any of them. What annoys me the most nowadays are the snap grip recovery and exaggerated grip level changes: Snap: When doing a wide slide, all of a sudden and without warning the rear tires recover all grip at an instant and throws you off the other way. Exaggerated: When driving over a light crest it’s natural that the grip level decreases. But the way the grip increases at even the lightest dip feels largely exaggerated at the rear tires. It doesn’t do that nearly as much at the front tires. This makes small humps/jumps during a light turn a nightmare as the rear grip seems to fluctuate all over the place. And it’s of course much worse with RWD cars. How I wish they would’ve improved the physics after launch. But the EA WRC team hasn’t even had the capacity to fix most of the smallest issues, so there’s zero chance of getting a physics update before the next new game. Which is late 2025 at the earliest.
@@mrelwoodgames5971 I have only now started playing again, so I don't have that much relevant experience. Besides finding RWD to be somewhat easier (in comparison to Dirt Rally 2.0) to drive except in seemingly random cases where it becomes really difficult. Though good news is that we are getting a big update this year, but I doubt they'll improve the physics.
SO MANY LOOPS
Thanks man great explanation, only got the game l wasn't impressed out of the box tried few settings that are recommended for my wheel still was impressed, after following your guide it feels like a different game much appreciated, am using t300 should l have soft lock on or off
@@eddiethehead1903 Thanks! Glad it was helpful. Soft lock is up to user preference. Soft lock off => you set the desired wheel rotation from the wheel base. Soft lock on => the game adjusts the rotation based on the car model. From old cars’ 900-1000• to modern WRC 540•. I have mine off at 640•.
@@mrelwoodgames5971 thanks for the quick reply am on ps5, I'll leave it on for the meantime, first rally game since PS1 days all these new settings are a bit confusing
U don't want Forza Horizon fun... ...in the meantime driving physics are more realistic than in both rally games and FFB is better to 😅
Laughs FFB missing out glitch from Fh3 never been fixed😅

FH3 could be a problem because it's controller support is far worse... CSR-Elite have G25 emulation mode and it works fine but I don't have any Fanatec pedals anymore. I don't even play FH3 anymore. FH4 Steam was a bit broken too but... It's another story.
@@FirssenSimracing i play FH3 when FH3 FFB works wasnt much bad then any FH in fact much better in some areas u dont Need WAIT 21 DAYS TO DRIVE WINTER so not even bothering 4 and 5(its joke since winter is non existance) Again 3 4 5 i get random sometimes boot up with all FFB sometimes dont AND I HAD TO WAKING MYSELF Again Its not only me either i saw countless post people asking FFB issue and Im tired of replying 'unplug cable on and off' My FH was been all MS store btw
As you yourself said at the beginning of the video that you did not manage to play the 10th part. So I can categorically say that in the 10th part everything is EXCELLENT with the controls. There is no "boat". Another thing is that the visual component of the 10th part is terrible. EVERYTHING is terrible there. I have VRC 10 on both PC (with High settings) and PS5 (everything is the same, only the resolution is 2 times smaller), this does not matter. All the maps are overexposed, the sun and shadows fall somehow clumsily, as if playing in Crysis 1. And no matter what anyone says, it is very distracting. Yes, you are right, everything is fine with the controls in EA WRC. But it is BORING! It doesn't keep me in suspense, and it's not about the complexity of the game. It doesn't really matter how fast the virtual opponent goes around the track. I had to come to terms with/adapt to the Generation and its "boat". I managed to adjust the steering wheel, with a strangely low value of 180 degrees it became acceptable. Feedback power all sliders at 150, except for the feedback on the front wheels - 70. Steering wheel - T-GT2 I'll try part 9, I'll add to the review... probably.
Thank you man! This has to be the best video out there explaining what each setting does.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I’m happy that it was helpful. 👍
❤
Great how to vid!!! Not just numbers but a great explanation!!!! Thanks!!! Cheers!!!!
I bought this game a few days ago I absolutely love it all bugs are fixed now no more frame drops that joilted you badly, runs perfect had to crank the handbrake up felt like I was grabbing a bag of spanners lol kinda useless so I fixed it ,this is the most realistic rallying sim out the cars perform as they do in real life, just play around with the settings and then hold onto your fillings lol no room for error.
@@bookah8787 It really is a great game! (I assume you’re talking about EA WRC, right? 😄)
@mrelwoodgames5971 yeah the ea wrc I'm absolutely loving it lol tricky though more practise needed 😄
Nothing beats DR1...Maybe RBR but I am yet to find out
EA WRC is Basically DR1 with Better suspension
@@od13166 I can see some of dat yeah
Great resource!
Tarmac is super sticky in this game. You start with cold tires and you are glued to the road. We have no clue if they are using their own physics engine or the one from Unreal engine right?
Yeah, overall the grip is excessive. I feel that in addition there would be some level of “traction control” enabled despite it being turned off. And once the grip is exceeded, the traction falls off the cliff all of a sudden. And comes back just as violently. Probably a strategic choice though, unfortunately. I haven’t seen any details of that level being shared with the community. Or any level actually.
@@mrelwoodgames5971 when I was testing Japan I thought I'm driving on rails. Just with the default setup I never drifted or slided. Like you said, traction control and all other driving aids are turned off. Feels just arcade like
exactly how it should be done
I don't know why the entire playerbase shits on this game just for 1 man's death.
I didn’t know they did. Perhaps the best game ever made.
Oh maybe because the game shoves the whole “revenge bad” thing down the players throat in the most banal way while killing a beloved character for shock value, not to mention the bizarre choice to make Abby a character to sympathize with AFTER the fact she bludgeoned said beloved character in the first hours of the game. In conclusion keep coping
@@rigorous_epsilon3888 I see all that as magnificent story writing where the player is shown that no one really is safe. The common Hollywood style where the main character is seemingly in danger but we all know can never be seriously hurt, is kind of boring. We’ve seen too much of that already. “Revenge bad” is of course the main theme, but I think it’s a realistic showcase of how a tragedy can fuel one’s actions and leave a persistent scar. I found it relatable, that’s how people’s minds really do work. I do get that this kind of story writing is rare in games, which can make it difficult for some to swallow. But these games obviously also have a strong player base that deeply loves the story and the games themselves. I’m on my 14th playthrough on the Part II… 😆
@@rigorous_epsilon3888 Yeah I didn't appreciate that either. Although I think the gameplay and dramatics aside from Joel and the revenge thing were quite decent. I HATE the revenge theme too they just forget about the zombies.
it sucks thats why
Bits like this made the game as memorable as it is.
Cool 🎉🎉
good
Thank you for accurately, explaining exactly what I felt was going on. I was wondering why the car felt like it was spinning from a center axis. These programmers are clowns. Ironically the parasite class think they are actually good at their jobs. Delusions.
2:30 fuck, I knew there is something wrong with hitting walls, now I know why. Why nobody can`t make proper rally game with RBR physics and for example with some easy mode for beginners? Or at least allow modding so players can fix all issues.
No VR available now for consoles.
I know, not for the foreseeable future. Which SUCKS! I’m lucky to have the VR in DR1 though, since even that can’t be obtained anymore.
@@mrelwoodgames5971 yeah I got Dirt a month ago thinking I could add the download and you can’t . Very unhappy 😔
@@tonymunford5804 I believe they might’ve had included the VR DLC in the physical game discs later on, but I’m not perfectly sure. If they did I’m sure they are hard to come by. Even with the crappy PSVR1 resolution and the next to nonexistent career mode it’s easily the most immersive and addicting gaming experience I’ve ever had. VR rallying really is that good. But EA WRC will have PC VR by the end of the month. That will definitely take it to next level! EA WRC is a magnificent game. Several bugs still, but still the foundation is great. I’ve clocked in 600+ hrs since Nov…
I'm a huge fan of the Finland stages, in this game and in almost every rally game, but the way jump landings have no feedback at all in the wheel really annoys me. Does someone have any tip?
I don’t think there’s anything that can be done about it but to hope that EA/CM will fix it. Unfortunately I’m not holding my breath considering how slowly they fix the even bigger issues. Btw, I recently switched to the TV mastering in the game’s audio settings. It boosts the low bass rumble that I find brings a bit more immersion (since I drive in bonnet cam, not sure if it would work in others).
To start with, what kind of steering wheel do you have?
What about the RBR physics? That feels way more realistic.
So I’ve heard. Don’t have a PC so can’t confirm.
Wrc Generations is miles better than ea wrc in almost all categories if you have played your share of rally games.. come on..
That’s an opinion.
WRC Gen is unplayable with T-GT2 and phisics trash
I will give this a go and come back to you...
Hey mrelwood, I'm new to simracing and EA WRC is my first rally game. You can't imagine how dissapointed I was when I jumped in to try WRC Generations or Dirt Rally. EA WRC just drives almost like a real car compared to those 2 and stages look amazing. I can't understand why poeple are shitting this game so much for graphics. Just play the game. It's much better than it might seem from the first look and whining of youtube/reddit.
Exactly! If only people could assess stuff more objectively, the world would be a very different place. I had hundreds of hours on DR2, but my honeymoon period was long gone when the EA WRC landed. I’m sure that helped me in comparing the handling with less attachment. It’s no secret that I already had a lot of wheel time on the EA WRC when I tried the WRC Gen, but then again the Gen handling was roughly familiar to me already from WRC 10, again leveling out the field somewhat.
you dont know how to play wrc generations. Setup the thumb sensivity to -10 and dead zone to 50%. And change the linear input on every button. Set dead zone on throttle and break to 50% as well. Use Hard tarmac tires like 99% of the time. I played both wrc G and EA wrc.... EA sucks compared to Generations or even wrc 10. You just need to know what you are doing on a controller. Try those games with a steering wheel. WRC G and 10 is king. EA sucks ;/
Sounds like you probably don’t know how to play EA WRC… 😂 Just kidding. I used the WRC Gen almost solely with a wheel. I dislike KT’s WRC games with passion, but that doesn’t mean that others would. Or should.
good game will work GOOD from 1st launch. Generation is unplayable trash. I need only buy game and it MUST work not like that u say. And if u play on Key or gamepad im rly sorry for u. Racing game must to be played on steering wheels. which DOES NOT WORK at WRC Gen!!! So ple stfu
Great approach to isolate and understand each setting. This is a scientific method. Great call on the order as well 💯 Thanks.
Thank you for the kind feedback! Much appreciated!
This is a great video man!
Thanks Cole! Unsurprisingly the Gen fans seem to disagree… 😆
for some reason i really enjoy the chile stages :) nice driving
Chile is my favorite. The stages just flow like no other and speeds aren’t too high.
👌👌
all skill, baby!
Dirt Rally 2.0 was frustrating because I've done plenty of dirt-road driving in RWD cars (90s Firebird and 2004 Mustang) and never spun out IRL, but in that game it was terrifying.
I picked up EA WRC on PS5 on sale last week, and overall I'm pretty happy but there's some weird stuff like placeholder textures that appear all over the course sometimes. But yeah, the overall driving model feels more forgiving and fun than Generations.
This bugged the living daylights out of me pretty much as soon as I started playing Dr2, combine that with the numb rock hard suspension I basically shelved it. Then went over to the KT games and it was night and day superior. Although try explaining the 'automatic turn in' function to a codemasters fan and you get nothing by flak for pointing out cars simply do not handle in way that codemasters think they do.
I know the video is kind of old but they did they changed anything since release? Recently I downloaded the game on EA play and driving model feels very very wierd and unnatural for me but I don't know why. Like the car turns too much and oversteer is like 0 or 1, nothing between and cars have no weight to them. I use G29 and I have no issues in Assetto Corsa. AC feels very natural to drive and I can feel the car but not in WRC.
Someone said that there was a minor physics improvement in one of the updates, but I didn’t notice one myself. While comparing the handling of a track racing game to a rally game isn’t very fruitful, I understand what you describe. The “snap oversteer” has been talked about quite a bit, and it makes for example the RWD cars very difficult to drive with their stock setup. It also practically prevents long slides/drifts, as they can’t be maintained or danced at the edge of the grip like you could IRL. Then again, at least in ACC if you lose grip, it’s all gone and nothing you do affects anything. I don’t remember exactly how AC behaves in this regard. There’s a behavior that I’d imagine exists to mimic tire flex and weight transfer. In practice it feels more as if you were driving with very low tire pressures. It’s much more prevalent on tarmac where it indeed makes the cars feel oversteery at first no matter the setup. It did take a good while for me to learn the handling, but here we are… The above are all the handling/physics issues that come to mind. So it’s not perfect, but it’s still the best handling we have in a rally game for consoles, and with a pretty large margin if you ask me.
@@mrelwoodgames5971 Still the steering is the wierdest. Idk what's wrong. Is there still that 200-300ms input lag?
@@Kasspirr Yes, it does require getting used to. Which does veer away from being perfectly realistic. I haven’t measured the input lag since, but I’d assume I would’ve noticed if it had changed.
You are trippin´
I think EA WRC is a good rally game, I just don't think it's a very good WRC game.... I never really felt like this was the Official WRC race season so much as I felt like I was playing the new DIRT rally game. That basically comes down to presentation, but with the work that Codemasters does with the F1 games, I was expecting, and really hoping, for this to give you the feeling of being a WRC Driver in your first season., and it fails at that. Solid rally game though.
I agree, this is the best rally game I ever played. It's incredibly fun, realism or not it's absolute madness while driving and that to me is how I think rally irl is.
You pointing out exactly my issues with Generations and previous games. The sound, the boat delayed feel and I also feel they nerfed sense of speed. I just think it was time to leave over the project to EA Codemaster now. The company felt like it lost passion, if sound can't be fixed to perfection in 11 games then they will never be fixed. Otherwise I did like the stages a lot so a shame they never got some things right. Good comparison.
dirt rally is indeed great in physics, better than 2, ea wrc has competition from only dirt 4 has both feel similar, otherwise generations is the only other modern rally game currently in competition
You are probably right about Dirt 4, I remember lots of people complaining how it also had too much grip, just like people say about EA WRC. It’s been so long since I played it though, don’t remember much. Except that the stages were computer generated and hence quite repetitive and boring at times.
Was that the cover of a pearl jam album?
I don’t know what you mean?
I'm just annoyed that there isnt rally cross
I've been off road racing for a little over 10 years now. Not rally but very similar in a lot of ways. we close off open roads and use them as a circuit. We have 13 and we practice them whenever we get the chance, so those hairpin left unseen over crest moments don't happen haha. I will say I'm quite impressed by EA sports WRC. I have a low end racing rig for my computer but even on controller this game is good. The audio specifically, I find myself checking my mirrors sometimes I get so immersed. And you really do need to use proper racing techniques to go fast. I have no idea how to drive a real full blown rally car but they handle how I'd expect them to based on my IRL experience. The only thing holding that game back for me is the performance issues but those are thankfully being fixed! When I played wrc generations I could instantly tell it's meant to be accessible and fun to drive. I personally didn't find it as fun though because I like doing the flashy and tricky maneuvers that are slow but look awesome that I can't really do in real life without effing the car up. all in all try out beamNG. It has really fun tuning and the off roading feels surprisingly good!
Could you record next video about EA WRC comparison with RBR? Especially the Hungarian Mod? Back in the day you had one of the most controversial and hands-on video with Physics explanation. However, you skipped RBR for some reason, which I believe is still the best sim out there.
I don’t have a Windows PC and I’m not going to get one just for RBR. That’s why I skipped any comparisons.
@@mrelwoodgames5971 Thanks for quick response. Sure it could have been nice to see such a comparison one day though. There are still many other ways to run RBR, even if you don't have a Windows PC (mac I guess?) the only issue may be VR, I have managed to run RBR on mac, but the only thing that didn't work was of course VR.
