Headunit update and sound deadening - Alpine ILX 507A - Classic Mini
Here, I update the firmware on my Alpine ILX 507A head unit and then try to find a vibration that has been bugging me for a while now. It only happens at low revs or idle. My theory was some more sound deadening on the lightweight panels.
It's a bit of a longer form, but it shows some of the design principles I put into the dash to make this sort of thing easy.

New seats for my Classic Mini.
Переглядів 488Місяць тому
Here, I find, buy, and modify a pair of Mazda MX5 (Miata) seats to fit my Classic Mini. I have been looking for new seats for ages, everything from classic buckets to performance seats from an A45 AMG Merc. I found this pair on FaceBook Marketplace with a busted airbag. With Derek helping with the stitching and $30 worth of steel and black paint, we were good to go :) Now it hugs me better and ...

Mini Check Straps
Переглядів 1423 місяці тому
I'm going for easy power gains here...I wanted to add another touch of red to the interior, so I replaced the door check straps. In the interests of "reduce, reuse, recycle," I grabbed a piece of red racing harness from Mini Spares and Repairs in Seaford, VIC. It was a bit dusty from storage, so a quick wash, and it was good to go. I showed Toby a photo, and he quickly told me I had the straps ...

Adjusting Classic Mini ride height - With ride along
Переглядів 4,5 тис.6 місяців тому
Here, I adjust the ride height of my Classic Mini after a weekend of what I think was the shocks bottoming out. I have high lows, so it is pretty simple, and I have it down to about an hour now to get the whole car sitting nicely. There is also a video of Classic Mini suspension working under the car, and always a nice drive through the Peninsuala to finish off with. Chapters 0:00 Intro 3:05 Un...
Custom dash build for my classic Mini
Переглядів 1,2 тис.6 місяців тому
Welcome back - Today I go through how I built my custom dash to fit my audio head unit, speakers and PowerTune Digital dash into my 1969 classic Mini. I'm a home mechanic and did this without any special tools or equipment. Some things made it easier, like the router table, but it wasn't essential. I used some basic wood working, fibreglassing and metal working skills to get it done. Hope you e...

Great video but ruined for me by the background music.
No problems, some like music some don't 👍
Hey mate. Love the dash. You have done a fantastic job. Looking at putting a digital dash in my 71 leyland. Do you have to program the dash once wired in?
Thanks for the comment. You don't really need to program it (no coding) but you do need to set the correct inputs, set the values for 0v and 5v readings etc. it has a GUI for all of that. Once it's all done you can start to.build what it looks like it or use the pre installed templates.
Great mod! Love it
Cheers mate. Thanks for that.
Where did you buy the digital dash or was a DIY? Great video by the way
Digital dash is by Powertune Digital. It is essentially a Raspberry Pi, touchscreen, with custom software installed.
@ ahh okay as was just thinking installing my iPad and Bluetooth away
Very cool Mini. Gladiator we salute you!
Cheers mate.
wishing i had such car
Cheers, I started it a long time ago and with a lot less experience.
Nice video. Owning the mini for 30 years; you really get to know it. Such love and dedication. My mode of transport is a classic mini. I might be the only person in the entire world that is driving an old English car as their only vehicle. That means no spouses car, no GFs or BFs, etc. I've been doing this for the last 8 years. I live in the USA where parts are non existent. Crazy I know.
Love it, such a fun car to drive. Even when things go wrong, once you are back in and driving it's worth it 😁
Hey great look on your mini. How did you paint the grille and headlight surrounds black?
Hi there. I gave them a scuff up with wet and dry, filled up with an etch primer for chrome and then normal prep and paint with 2k. I would have done black chrome ideally but was time poor on this build. It has held up really well considering.
I lovvveee this video. I have a question, do you have a tilt lock or something for the seat base?
Cheers for the comment. No I don't have a tilt lock. I made it the same as.it was when stock. Not sure what year the tilt locks came in, for Australian Minis.
Are you sure you're not an engineer. Good job
I have a big piece of paper that says im a Mech Engineer...But I am a more of a tinkerer :)
@@MyModdedMini,loved the video ,Bonza
Cheers mate 🍻
I just spent $600 for new foam in my 2 x cobra bucket seats (a very ordinary job I might add).. yours look like much more comfortable than mine 😄
I have done the foam in my stock mini seats and it wasnt too bad. Just need to go slow I think. I have not seen how the Cobras are put together, would be worth checking it out yourself next time, you could do it. I just went for a spin around the peninsula and yes they are very comfortable.
Woohoo so happy to have contributed to your beautiful car.
Thanks again, I am very happy with them.
In the '70's, I bought an Innocenti Mini Cooper 1300, Bluette with a Bianco Avorio roof, a lovely colour combination. My previous car was a beautiful, but very thirsty... Jensen Interceptor Mk2! I kept the Mini for 20 years, it was my daily runabout in traffic congested Athens. I also drove all over Greece with it, it was such fun! I admit I had fallen in love with it. So had my Cocker Spaniel, he loved the rides in it, with the matching white fabric Webasto roof open! With traffic conditions worsening more and more, it had to go in favour of a modern car. I am so glad the subsequent owner kept it in equally great, if not even better, shape and I am glad to see it from time to time in the press in historic car events! Yes, at the time, it was the ideal city car. Testament to this, is the 20 year long period it was my daily car.
That is a great story, thanks for sharing, love it :) People forget that these were the cars people drove every day for a long time.
I can tell you one thing, having an afr gauge is very handy for trying to self tune. Well worth the investment, I personally wouldnt buy a second hand one if it doesnt come with a sensor. Due to the sensor being 150 to 200 bucks 😅. So dont be like me and buy one second hand and then realise you have to spend the equivalent to a new kit.
It sounded like you were speaking from experience haha, thanks for the tip. I was looking at the Spartan 3 lite. It gives a 0-5v output which is what i need for it to talk to my digital dash and you can get it with the Bosch sensor or an ADV one which they say is better again.
@@MyModdedMini I mean either or sensor will work, if you're gonna get a bosch 4.9 lsu then T.I performance is the cheapest for literally the same thing from other companies, paid around 150 or maybe a bit less.
Great video, I’m also on the Peninsula, can you please tell me where you got your front tow hooks from and did they just bolt on without drilling, thanks.
Thanks mate..let me know if you see me cruising around. As for the tow hooks, I made them, no drilling required 👍 I'll do a video up of how I made them.
Mega car, i have had several. Currently about to paint my daughters one (she bought it when she was 15) she is now learning to drive and can't wait to drive it.
Thanks for that. Are you a spray painter? It was prob the most intimidating part I did (not being a spray painter). I just watched lots of UA-cam 😅
@@MyModdedMini nope :).. half the fun is learning.. My daughter is already not fussed about the finish as its her car, and its something she is building with me, which she thinks is more important.. so.... we shall give it a go :)
Love that 😁 I watched heaps of @PaintSociety I did 2k gloss over base and really happy with it for a home job.
@@MyModdedMini thanks ill give them a watch!! I'll put some via up of my channel
Great Machine, I got my driving license in one Love it, Cheers
Good to hear John :)
With the need for ear plugs wouldn't it be a good idea to put in some sound deadening? Quiet things down a bit! You have a heater in the car, so why not install air conditioning too? I can only imagine how much insurance would be for something so custom done up like this as a daily
Yeah I have it covered in sound deadening, which is good but it's not magic. You still only have a piece of steel, sound deadening, and a piece of fabric. And probably not too much acoustic engineering in the build haha. I have seen people put AC in but I didn't want to sap the power or add the complexity. Cheers.
Wow that is cool! What software are you using to make the graphic of your car?
Cheers mate, I use Photoshop, but any image editor that lets ytou work with layers would work. This one is essentially the green gauges as bars behind the overlay which has transparent sections to show through.
Little peek at your red painted transmission housing! Looks awesome! Also love the shots inside the wheel well of the suspension in action 👀
yeah, I did the block, head and transmission all together. It is in a 2k red and has held up pretty well so far.
Great to see the behind the scenes of how you made your dash! My next big project on my car is the interior, dash, and audio set up. Might be reaching out for some tips
No probs, I'd be happy to help, the main things I have learnt over the years of building dashes and audio setups, is to make sure it is maintainable. The one now is awesome, a few screws and it all comes out to get to the wiring behind.
Big respect to anyone who daily’s a classic mini! I can’t wait to see more videos going into the details, will be taking notes 😁
More to come!
That’s an absolutely gorgeous work of art 😍 and I look forward to seeing more on this and previous builds.
Thanks TallGuy :) I might be doing a "cruising around talking" video this weekend - Hope the weather is nice.
I would love to see a video about daily driving this kind of car, what it's like, it's positives/negatives costs involved etc! I'm up in QLD and dream to one day buy a classic mini and do it up. Don't know where I will start but any tips with modding a car so extensively like this while using it as a daily would really give me a good idea of what I should do! Do you run into issues with modifying a mini so much with the Police?
Sound like a great idea, I might put something together. Things like driving out yesterday afternoon and the steering goes because I've stripped the spline in the inner column....as for legal issues, my mods are ergonomic and still use mini parts mostly, and I tried to do everything I can to comply 👍
Love it need a ride now
Any time you are around, let me know 👍
That’s cool
It is important to point out that when adjusting the rear for each milimiter that you change in the trumpet you are changing 5 in the height of the car, and 1:3 at the front. Also, wheel alignment changes noticeably if yoy adjust the front heigth
Yeah for sure 👍 I've done it a few times using the ratio and found it hard to get an accurate measurements under the car so now I get it close and then set, check, set, check, set....maybe I might make a "go, no-go" gauge, next project idea 💡
Wow that looks awesome! Is the speed sensor driven off the gearbox or is it a gps sender?
G'day Chux, cheers mate. It is a GPS sensor, I have asked the developers if they would incorporate a gearbox electronic speedo mode. I think I did see another owner that modified the code even further to accept that kind of hall effect signal (it ir really just a counter) but it has never been an issue so far, until I go into a Melbourne tunnel. They should all have the green speed lights that race along the sides like the southbound city one does :)
Very nice job!! This makes me want to get the io extender now. Lol.
Cheers mate, yeah it is pretty good. There are some teething issues that aren't as slick as if I had an ecu but they weren't a thing in 69'. I'm looking at getting an AFR sensor next so I can DIY tune a bit more accurately.
When I jack mine up the trumpet end falls off ,any advice
I have had that too mate, (better than having them seized on in my opinion) my fix is winding the adjusters out so that it can't drop too much when you take the weight off. I also make sure its all aligned when I lower it down and then rock it to settle it in. I know a guy that makes the rods with springs in them so that it always has a bit of tension when the weight it off. Might have to have a better look next time I see one.
Just check the rod length. This was happening on my project and turns out the rod was the incorrect one for the hi-lo so was about 40mm too short. Correct matching rods and problem solved.
Looks Great, love the Color.
Thanks for that, it is the Toyota Magnetic Grey 1G3. I picked it because its my daily driver, when I pick up stone chips its easier to find a pen to do the touch up.
👊🏽💯🇹🇹
Cheers :)
tHanks for taking us along on the ride !
Glad you enjoyed :)
Love the shots under the guard while you're driving, that's awesome
Thanks @chux007 - I though tit would be cool to see for people that don't know how awesome a Classic Mini suspension is :) I had one part when the tyre knocked the camera turning right so that was a bit of a moment haha
@@MyModdedMini haha that would have sounded expensive! I went over a speedhump in my clubman once and the wheel scrubbed on the connector for the heater intake hose, sent it flying and made a horrible noise. Fixed now though :)
I saw the POV move on my livestream to phone so pulled up and fixed it (and then took it easy on right handers for a bit). Yeah there is a surprising amount of travel in the front, need to keep everything tucked up.
Love the spare wheel on the boot and other different style choices, i bet there's a bunch of people out there that let you know how much they don't like them though hehehe
Thanks Chux, yeah, if I had an OG Cooper S or something like that - or if I had the coin to have one parked up in a trailer somewhere, I would probably keep one original. For me the spare on the back was because of the audio setup I built year ago and then decided to keep it. I just love cars and how varied they are, like a work of art, they won't all appeal to everyone :)
Wow...nice car. I'm most impressed with your wife, she is indeed a legend!
Thanks James. I'm also impressed with my wife ;) It was bright yellow 2k as well so not easy to get off. I set it up on a rotisserie, and she would drag it out a weekend, wire wheel until she was getting pins and needles in her hands and then roll it away :) while looking after the three kids...
Awesome. Love to see more on the dash set up
Sure thing, do you want the actual building of the dash or the electronic setup?
