    I'm hearing the Striped bass spawn has failed for 7 years now, happy to see some small bass, do you think they are spawning somewhere else since they migrate up the east coast? Or is it gloomy & possibly what we have is all that's left?

    • @KambotroutFishing
      @KambotroutFishing 4 дні тому

      I think it’s possible that spawns are happening elsewhere, but given the size of the chesapeake, I don’t see how any other estuary or estuaries can compensate for the loss of that habitat. I think the theory of other spawning areas is more so cope for not wanting to confront the realities of overharvest, habitat destruction, and pollution. I’m not optimistic.

      @@KambotroutFishing I've got a few questions actually. I've never fished a tidal fishery before. I'm aware the tide direction/level matters a lot more than time of day. But (generally) how far inland is the water brackish? And how does that affect snakeheads? And how do they relate to current? looking around on google maps I see a number of smaller rivers/creek arms that (to my bass fishing eyes at least) look super juicy. But also look like they have a good amount of current moving through them at all times. I imagine snakehead would much prefer slack water and probably stay away from current if they can. But having never fished for them before I don't know

    I thought you’re not allowed to release them back in the water

    • @KambotroutFishing
      @KambotroutFishing 16 днів тому

      Legal requirements on Snakehead vary by state, but in most cases, you’re allowed to release them immediately after catching them back into the waters in which you caught them. That’s the case in MD, DE, and VA (this was in MD). It’s usually only illegal to possess live snakehead or to transport live snakehead (which makes good sense in my opinion). I often harvest them, but it usually depends on whether or not I have room in the freezer or know someone who wants them. They’re the best tasting fish in freshwater and have an excellent meat to body ratio. They’re also easy to filet, so if I need meat or know someone who does, I’ll often keep them. With that said, I’ll release them if I don’t have a need to harvest. Many people take an issue with this because they’re labeled as an invasive species, and most fisheries managers do highly encourage their harvest. The peer-reviewed and published science thus far has not shown invasive impact. I’ve actually done an interview series with John Odenkirk, a VDGIF fisheries biologist, in which we review the most recent science and legal requirements on the species (link below if you’re interested). ua-cam.com/video/lceYaOj8P9M/v-deo.html Still, invasive impact sometimes takes several decades to manifest, so if someone does harvest intensely, I understand their position. My personal opinion is that the degree of their impact will depend on the waters involved. In uniformly shallow waters with no established large predatory species (like Blackwater), they’ll likely have more of an impact (though I do think their impact is overblown and the snakehead scapegoated for our own impact). In deeper waters though, they’ll likely have less of an impact, especially when those deeper waters have large, established predatory fish. For me, they’re an admirable species, excellent parents, and incredible sportfish. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    Retired and living in Thailand l can snakeheads any where there is a foot of water. After a rain I wave seen snakeheads in my front yard. Where bass fishing is the number one sport fish ( mailing since they don't taste that good) . Here in thailand the snakehead is the number one sport fish, not only because they put up a hecck of a fight , they are delicious too. Fishing is year round since the weather is always warm, gerat for a retiree. Notmention safe since the snakehead likes to hut for food in shallow water near the shoreline, should you fall out of the boat. Snakehead fishing is also a well supported sport with fishing tackle shops all over the country selling the latest tackle and lures. I especially appreciate that many of the tackle shops even offer professional rod and reel repair at very reasonable prices.

    Great tips!! I have definitely needed to sharpen hooks after a couple of fish. I find sharpening in the opposite direction that you showed at 5:30 works a lot better. I got my tips on hook sharpening here ua-cam.com/video/SaHsAzWJw8A/v-deo.htmlsi=NDVufh-t_WIjBruM&t=225

    Steven, what is the little hammer/ax tool you use to dispatch your snakeheads that you cultivate? Do you put them on a stringer or on ice? Do you have a video on cultivating your snakeheads? I have a net catch bag I put over the side of my kayak for bass but have planned on putting snakes on ice in an insulated fishbag.

      Hey Stan. Thought I’d replied to you here but I don’t see my comment any more. That tool is linked here: amzn.to/3TVnKXM When harvesting, I usually club them, slice their gills, then let them bleed out on a hoop stringer. Afterward, it’s best to have them in an ice slurry, but I usually only have them on ice in the warmest months when I’m worried about water temps. Hope this helps and good luck 🎣

      @@KambotroutFishing Thank you, Steven, being a novice, the tools and techniques for fishing, especially for snakeheads, are new to me. Your videos have been somewhat of a vicarious ratification for me since I have yet to catch a snakehead. However, armed with you videos, I am determined to change that record. Again, thanks for the advise. I look forward to seeing you out on the water one day.

  • @stanhuie3836

    Steven, you note the mating dance ritual of the snakehead. I figure that was what I was watching the other day. The tide had gone out and I was near low and in a heavily grassed area I saw several spots where snakehead looked to be fighting or wrestling as they cleared a hole in the grass. I tried casting beyond those and pulling my frog through the spot where I saw them but only got one apparent bite but I didn't plant a hook. Considering that this was a mating ritual, it may have been a "get the hell out of here" splash.

    • @KambotroutFishing
      @KambotroutFishing 26 днів тому

      Sounds very likely that’s what you were seeing. When they’re in nesting and spawning mode, they rarely hit, and when they do, it’s often a warning or territorial hit vs them actually taking it in.

    “Gotcha” followed by the well known pleading zen meditation chant “don’t come off, don’t come off, don’t come off” seems to help the hook set at the molecular level. It’s some kinda quantum stuff they’re figuring it out now 😂

    Just started using Reaction Tackle braid. Been using it for a couple months and love it. I'm using 40# no-fade black. It was $29 for 1000 yards! Casts smooth and reduces backlashes. Give it a try
