Zebco 33 is a very good reel from Benjamin Stewart Sr From Milwaukee, WI Keep Up The good work
If all the engravings it has are : Fre-Line, the engraved white circles, and says Wright & McGill CO. ….. what year range would that be part of? It doesn’t have any city/state on it, on the bottom of the back, it has Fre-Line engraved in the metal, the model number (10-BC) is on the center of the back, and the letters are the color red…. Any ideas how old by the description I’ve given ?
The bail needs is cleaned and a drop of oil
Excellent job thank you for the wonderful tips
just got same model in a bit rougher cond. it dont have the odd bushing for pinion main shaft just a dimple in cover inside for end of shaft. mine is missing the drag adjustment screw. any idea where to find replacement as no fb groups for shakspeare. the bushing must have been a newer model feature to keep shaft from wobbling when cranked making it drag a bit so mines likely older like 1954
I recently acquired a Fre-Line Model 16. It has a brake lever on the crank that acts as a drag. Glad you made this video, so I know what to expect when I take it fishing.
So there's no drag stack on this reel???
I have a dual rivet lexan reel. What year would that be?
Getting an exact year would require more detailed information (rivet size and position, frame design, anti-reverse switch shape, etc.). But a two rivet Lexan would date between 1969 to 1974.
@@tonys.5940 lol. That's good enough honestly. Thanks
That particular reel body is made steel not lexan
I just reworked one of these. It casts fine, but the retrieving is intermittent. It will stop pulling in line then maybe resume. Then stop again. Help please.
Assuming the reel is assembled properly, it sounds like there may be too much line on the spool. If that happens, it can cause intermittent pick-up. Maybe try reducing the amount of line on the spool. Also, as you may know, spincast reels do best if there is at least a little tension on the line when retrieving line. So, if you are reeling-in slack, it's a good idea to apply some tension by gently using your thumb and forefinger to hold the line and provide just the slightest resistance. In addition to reducing line pick-up inconsistency, this also helps prevent loose line on the spool which causes tangles and "bird nests". I hope this helps. Let me know if you get it working correctly.
I have one of these same 100a reels and despite it’s excellent condition, the drag is incredibly tight even with the drag adjustment screw completely removed. I’m wondering if get the plastic drag cylinder has swelled over time? I’ve seen that happen to the center shafts on many plastic body Zebcos.
I wonder that, too. I have also experienced this with the spindle of some Zebcos (swelling). In the case of the Zebcos, I put a sanding barrel on a dremel and honed-out the spool. It was easier to get an even removal of material that way vs. trying to sand the spindle (or in your case, the drag rings). You might try honing out the center of your spool a bit with a dremel.
@@tonys.5940 I did and now it works well! I ended up using sandpaper taped to a socket and used a drill to get an even removal of material.
I'm 57 yr old and I love these old Zebco reels! These reels contributed so much to getting so many people outside and going fishing. When I was young and didn't know about baitcaster or spinning reels, I was so proud to have a new Zebco 404 and a good rod I had bought for myself from the local hardware store from money I made working on the farm, and I used it as much as I could. Striped it, cleaned and oiled it and spent good money on a roll of Stren for it because that is what Bill Dance said to use! I was a happy camper! Caught lots of fish on that rod with Mepps Comet Minos!
They truly are part of our childhood experience and nostalgia. It's why I love them so much today and still use them. If properly maintained, they'll last for more than a lifetime!
I have a late 70s metal foot green 202 where the drag lever post broke off. Would I fix that the same way? Seems like the drag works nearly identically but the drag knob is pinned in.
Yes, the repair would essentially be the same.
@@tonys.5940 the post was closer to the edge than on the 404 so I had to remove quite a bit of the screw head but I got it working! Now I’ll have to see if it’ll hold long term.
I picked up a Century 225 and got it back in shape, looks like identical internals. Nice reel, the 225 was marked USA made on the edge of the button. I rub some silicone spray (or Armorall) on the graphite and plastic parts, they look new again. My rotor was a little different, there was an opening on the rotor over the pickup pin parts, and a tiny protrusion on the pickup pin arm that you use to move the arm out of the way to tighten down the rotor nut.
I enjoy seeing the design and manufacturing tech from different places and time periods. An obscure item can be very interesting
I absolutely agree. I love to see the differences in design and engineering, especially in the "odd balls"
thanks a lot for the video ! Ive got two old DAM reels: a Quick 1202 and a Royale 3500 MD ( the last mode reel "made in Germany" i think) which im about to service. They both have an annoying pin in the handle which locks the main gear to the handle like the wheel in the video. And I didnt know how to remove it, now I do Thanks! . Wow 3 dollars for that 220 N thats an insanely good buy.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video. I hope the service of your reels went well!
@@tonys.5940 it did thanks to you
I got one of these but the line brake has crumbled away, do they work without one or do you need it for sure? Maybe a thin 1/16” thick o ring of proper size would work?
It probably requires one. I take my reels into the local hardware store and find an o-ring that is about the right diameter and thickness. I use e-6000 or similar type glue to attach to the spinnerhead. This type of fix works great.
@@tonys.5940 I got a Midwest 64815 o-ring. 7/8” ID, 1-1/16” OD, and 3/32” thickness. I think it’s about right for the job.
Great video that, besides seeing an example of servicing a reel without "encasing" the "internals" with too much grease, I got to see the engineering changes made for "N series" models. The anti-reverse mechanisms are clearly different, with upside as well as downside IMHO. The "non N" reels have a pawl arrangement on the handle side of the drive gear and that's actuated by a lever out on the crank assembly. But this N model has the anti-reverse built into the rotor housing instead. Possible upsides: 1) the anti-reverse loads are not transmitted through the whole drive chain, removing a source wear on the drive chain. 2) the drive gear wheel itself must be closer to the crank bush so the shaft would be better supported by the bush. Biggest downside - that infernal extra clicking! I wonder if there's a way to fix that? Maybe a thin smear one of the "heavy-but-sticky" real greases that are around now might deaden the sound without gumming up the smoothness of the reel. I don't think you put any sort of lubricant there though - or am I missing something...
Thanks! Yes, I too hate that clicking! I use a heavy grease on the spincast reels that have a noisy anti-reverse, and it helps quiet them down. I'm not sure if it would work on the Quick spinning reels or not.
I just used the one I got! She casts ,she reels. Pole itself was broken but a simple fix & clean. I was proud to cast it a few times.
Nice! They actually work pretty good, surprisingly. I ended up getting the Budweiser version to add to the collection.
@@tonys.5940 mine was alittle more beat than yours but I was surprised how nice it casts. Budweiser one would be sweet to have. I got this and a 1940s Bristol telescope fly rod both functional Our river just got drained due to floods but I'm going to keep using it until I catch 1 then hang her on the wall lol
I recently went through my father's 1075 reel which was in excellent condition s his other reels. It also had just 1 pin pickup and I believe it was built that way to cut production cost. I am planning on installing a second pin to help with its performance. I have several Abumatic 170's reels which all have 2 pin pickups. In my opinion I really believe the design and construction of the vintage 70's model was the best.
Good to know! Thanks for the info. I'm surprised they cheaped-out and opted not to have two pick-up pins 😞
Still going strong!
I have to admit, I think this is your best video yet. Thank you for sharing and for a little peek into your journey.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.
Can you do a video of the Zebco 164?
I'll see if I have one. If I do I'll move it to the front of the line.
@@tonys.5940 Thanks. I just got one and it seems to be considerably different from the 154.
good to seen someone preserving the great old rods....thanks for the tips
My pleasure. I love fixing the old rods and taking them out and using them
Thank you for the video! Helped me take down my vintage 888, they’re very similar.
My pleasure! Glad it was helpful for servicing your 888.
My great aunt used two of those and caught just about everything in the Mississippi with them, tough reels
Was the putty cheaper than just buying another handle?
The stuff I used in the video is kind of expensive, but it comes in a large quantity, and I use it for many different applications. You can easily use the stuff you find at the hardware store or tackle shop that is marketed for aluminum boat repair, etc. (It comes in a small stick that you knead together like clay). That comes in smaller quantities and is probably cheaper than trying to find an 80-year-old replacement handle with intact bakelite (depending on the reel). In some cases, people want to restore "Grandpa's old reel" and want to keep as much of it as original as possible, so the time and expense of repairing the handle vs. finding a pristine replacement is not as important.
Neat idea to use the straw as an escutcheon of sorts. How has the handle held up over the last year?
Thank you. I've been using a Shakespeare 1810 Wondereel for sixty years. Never taken one that far apart. Great details in your video. My only issue has been the bend on the release slider on the spool cap; the bend of tab that the center shaft actuates. I assume it is simply 2 ninety degrees bends off the slider mechanism. Mine has been misaligned and caused pseudo releases. Thanks again.
This is what I needed. Cleaning up Dads to use
That's awesome! Thankfully, I still have my Dad's fishing reel. Priceless.
Looks like it has a 76 Camaro floor shifter on it
would love to see you do a video with the zebco ul-4
I think I have one. I'll try to remember to move it up to the front of the line.
@@tonys.5940 thanks because I just got one off somebody and I have no clue how to take it apart
I have a Garcia Mitchel 300 with the hockey stick type lever, what year did that change? Love these old reels!
I believe they switched from the "hockey stick" anti-reverse lever to the straight lever in 1968.
Thanks for sharing!! Enjoyed it
I'm 14 and my mamaw gave m this same fishing rod.....it wasn't working so she told me to find a video to help us......your video was super useful!! I have already liked and subscribed....THANKS!
That's awesome. I'm glad the video helped you get the reel working like it should.
Can you change the handle from left to right?..
I don't believe so. They made left-handled reels. I saw one the other day. They are few are far between, I think.
I got 2 1965 33's My 2 best reels
PLEASE HELP . DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN PURCHASE THE GOLD FRONT LINE COVER CAP FOR A SHAKESPEARE MODEL 1771 EB ? I NEED ONE FOR A REEL I GOT FROM A YARD SALE .AND I WANT TO PUT IT IN A DISPLAY CASE . THANKS
What can I do if the plastic line stop on the front of the line pickup cap goes bad and starts cracking? Sections of the ring on mine have cracked and fallen off. Would an o ring of similar thickness amd diameter glued to the cap face work?
Absolutely. That's what I do. Here is a video I did showing how to attach an o-ring on a spincast reel. It starts at the 36:35 mark. ua-cam.com/video/QaYQxYbq1bk/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared Just take your spinnerhead and what's left of the line brake with you to the hardware store so you can get an o-ring of similar diameter and thickness. I use E-6000 or similar type glue to attach the O-ring.
@@tonys.5940 awesome thank you!
Nicely done
i got 2 of them in the 357 in the bullet i still use them had one of them as a kid fishing in fld i use it still for nostalgia great video love these old bullets
I was looking at one of those on eBay the other day I'm glad you made a video on it It seems like a nice reel I'm impressed with the gears being brass and well made I'm always on the fence about buying zebcos because of the rubber line stop Any idea why they are often brittle and falling apart? Salt water maybe? And one more thing at the 13 minute mark of the video I noticed a quarter on your table and it looked like a Canadian quarter to me As a Canadian it looked like a caribou on it I really enjoyed the video as usual Thanks
Thanks! Glad the video was useful. Depending on the model, the line brake can be rubber, plastic, or some kind of nylon-like material. I'm not sure what makes them become brittle. My guess is extreme temperatures and age, but I'm not sure. The good news is that if they break, you can find a rubber o-ring of similar diameter and thickness at your local hardware store and glue it to the spinnerhead with E-6000 glue, and you're good to go for another 50 years!
@@tonys.5940 thanks for the info
I got a Heddon 152 the shaft spring is missing. Do you have any idea where I could get one. If I cannot get one I guess I could make one.
I Have A Heddon 150
That "D-shaped" spring in the spool spindle? You can make one from spring wire available at a good mom & pop hardware store (or online). I got some at my local hardware store. They were calling it "music wire". They had several different diameters for sale in ~3 foot lengths. I've used it a lot to make repairs on fishing reels.
When removing the drag screw lift up on the black arrow
The non n were left to right handle convertible.
not the case with the larger N series - you can switch the crank over on the 330N and the 440N
Some of the internal parts seem very similar to the Mitchell 300 spinning reels . Not sure if they share some history
I have silver one
When i was a kid thats what i had, loved em
I have some of the 4 notch, think they r 61
First off i sure do miss Western Auto stores, nice find two bucks i always seek out fishing reels especially spincast reels at antique store, flea markets.the older USA reels have the nice engraving as opposed to decals. The casting of the button was intriguing i want to try that. In the end both reels are very cool, ive seen the Clipper on ebay before but not the Revelation. Great video.
Thank you. It's tons of fun to bring the old stuff back to life.
Bought one off ebay like never used i think, silver body and blue - green cap. I see now how to strip it down yeah didn't think to take the two screws completely out - TY ! I'm intrigued the release button is so small but anxious to take it to the lake. I mounted it on a cheap Zebco hotshot rod i think it will do fine.
Glad to see I'm not the only one that likes to put these old reels on rods and go out and use them! I've quit using the modern stuff altogether.
