    The Lutheran churches have always been known as the singing church. We have settings of liturgies and service music since we are liturgical like the Catholic and Episcopalian churches. The focus of the service is like twin peaks...word and sacrament.. Today, parts of the music liturgy have been eliminated compared to 1917. We follow more what Vatican 2 offered.. And there are many synods of Lutheran denominations...the ELCA being thr largest. Some of the others are more conservative. The ELCA is in full communion with the United Methodist Church.

    Found two of the "Reach Out" New Testaments at my local Goodwill. One of them has the cover all faded but the pages are fine, whilst the other, the cover is new, but the pages are all foxed (term for discolored pages that are stained with age but thankfully aren't toxic). Don't know how that happened, but strange things happen. As for the Living Bible/TLB itself, I believe it is fine, but really shouldn't be read on its own, and instead paired up with another translation (KJV for example, or ESV), and it's got bad translation in spots as well. It also pales compared to the NLT or even the CEV, yet those two are not in my top translations.

      @@saintsheepy6682 Using it with a more literal translation like those is definitely a great method. I suspect I may have gotten into TLB myself had I been around then but I've certainly appreciated its legacy as I regularly use the NLT. Enjoy those New Testaments!

      You're welcome! I've ended up not making too many changes, other than modifying how I form some letters, which has made them easier to write and more legible. I still write with a "left hook". Getting rid of that would require me to change how I orient the paper when I'm writing, and I found it too difficult to adjust for the limited amount of writing I do. But I'd definitely encourage them to work on breaking that habit now if they have it, that to me seems to have been the biggest issue and I wish I'd been aware of it when I was young. It makes it hard for me to write/draw without smudging and was very discouraging when I was a kid, especially since I didn't know I was doing it. Best of luck!

    • @FOHguy
      @FOHguy 4 місяці тому

      @MAMoreno I wonder, though, if the Bible is the Word of God, why don't they all say the same thing? I'm really curious about this. If history textbooks say different events happened in different ways, some are going to be wrong.

    • @MAMoreno
      @MAMoreno 4 місяці тому

      @@FOHguy I suppose it would depend on what you mean by "say the same thing." If you're talking about textual variants (places where ancient manuscripts read differently from one another), these variants don't really amount to saying that "different events happened in different ways." Instead, they typically reflect slightly longer or shorter readings of the same basic text. For instance, some ancient copies of Genesis directly quote Cain's words to Abel in chapter 4, while others don't. In either case, Cain kills Abel the same way. Maybe a copyist added Cain's line to round out the passage, possibly drawing upon an old oral tradition associated with the story. Maybe another copyist left it out by accident or had to rely on a worn scroll that was damaged in that spot. Subsequent generations do their best to address these minor transmission issues while recognizing that they are indeed minor. If you instead mean that two translations handle the same text in a different way, that's just the nature of translation. When you're bringing something into another language, you have to weigh how much you'll stick to the original language's syntax and how much you'll adjust it to make sense in the new language. Some translations favor sticking close to the original wording, while others favor making it sound natural to readers, but all translations do both to some degree. Inevitably, a translator who seeks to produce clear, idiomatic English will have to make a few interpretive decisions that a translator who prioritizes the source text's phrasing will not. The latter can settle for ambiguous, awkward wording, but the former cannot. And this is where the translator's own beliefs and biases may lead to small divergences in meaning between two versions. A simple example is to be found in 1 John 5.6. If you stick closely to the Greek wording you get what you see in the NRSVue: "This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood." That's pretty faithful to John's wording, but it's not particularly clear. So what did the writer mean? Well, we can look to two other translations to see the two most common understandings of this verse: - CEV: Water and blood came out from the side of Jesus Christ. It wasn't just water, but water and blood. - NLT: And Jesus Christ was revealed as God’s Son by his baptism in water and by shedding his blood on the cross-not by water only, but by water and blood. The CEV here assumes that the verse is alluding to the water and blood from the crucifixion, as described in John 19.34-35. The NLT instead takes it as a reference to two different events, both described in the Gospels. The overall meaning of this passage is the same regardless of this slight ambiguity, so it's not the biggest deal. Still, if you choose to consult the NRSVue, CEV, and NLT together in your study of the Bible, you'll get far more information on this verse than you would if you used the NRSVue, CEV, or NLT alone.
