Will my 80's YAMAHA XJ900 Pass a UK MOT Test, how will it ride?
To allow me to progress with this bike I need to be able to get it on the road legally, in his video I'll be booking XJ900 in for a M.O.T test, hopefully with a pass it will allow me to ride the bike and get it finished.
Either way ill get to ride it and share my first thoughts.

Nice job, unfortunately the amount of work involved never reflects in the value of the bike, it's definitely a labour of love, well worth doing though it's a lovely bike, I have been thinking of going back to one myself .
@@thewiltshirerider01 it's very rewarding, saving another bike. It will look amazing once finished.
Looks and sounds great! I’ve only ever ridden the XJ750, a long time ago. Recently I picked up not one, but two, XJ900Fs as project bikes! The first one is nearly finished after a complete nut and bolt strip down. I’m totally re-styling it to a naked classic look with no fairing, a round headlight and Acewell speedo, wire wheels and XJR1200 fuel tank. It will hopefully still have the soul of the original, but will look totally different. It’s a good solid bike to work on and nicely engineered.
@tribsa7503 That sounds fantastic, a great concept, I hope it comes together nicely for you.
im interested in the future purchase , i had one when i was 19 years old and even to this day its probably my favourite bike.
Cool, as it progresses and you're still interested, drop me an email. The address is on the channel.
Ive just picked up a 93 XJ900F with 22k original miles on it , imported from the UK to Ireland in 2012 and sat in a older guys shed for a decade, had to bring it back to life, everything was seized, brakes, tyres flat etc, got it back to life wow what a cracking machine, a classic, great to see these bikes still on the road, dont sell it!!! They aint worth much at the moment, im keeping this as its in such good condition, dont make em like this anymore! Cheers for the videos, been a great help and really enjoyed em!! All the best Marc
@burp1234 Hi Marc, thank you for the nice comment. As you say, a cracking machine. I'm really enjoying getting it back on the road, I just love how it rides. 22k on yours, that's very low mileage, sounds quite the find. Well done for getting another classic back on the road.
@@10MilMoto its too nice to part with and got it for a song, drives like new, even had its original hand book in the back seat, total barn find , im beyond lucky!! same colour as yours, its only issue is the exhaust is fairly rotten underneath, common problem.
I seemed to get lucky with the exhaust. It has some rott underneath, but once cleaned up and treated regularity with ACF50, it should be ok for a few more years. Your bike sounds a real find.
How is the suspension , my next bike must have premium suspension
Excellent IMO, it's only the factory low version that has a manual adjuster to the rear, standard the bike has dynamic rear suspension electronically adjustable.
Can you tell us about the phone mount you have installed on the wind screen bracket? This bike falls into the category called 'crossover'.
@michaelhawkins5530 Yes, of course. I removed the BMW mount for the BMW NAV. This left a bar to mount a quad lock mirror mount too. If you do a Google search for f900xr sat nav mount, lots of options will pop up.
At 70 years of age I'm still riding mine daily had a busa sold it had a zx10 sold it had many others and sold them all done the motor some 6 years ago with different cams sprockets etc etc and still doing 300 kph zzr1100 for me is simply the best bike ever
@LuckyCondorBird-di1wb that's amazing. Just love, you're still going strong on it, and it gives me hope I can still ride mine long into the future. I took mine for a winter ride yesterday, a truly amazing bike.
Nice repair, its the engineering brain working 👍
it worked very well, I didn't really need to replace the choke in the end.
It always threw me how off centre the clutch is to the casing, I loved my xj and watching you do this has brought back so many memories, i had 4 into one pipes on mine and sounded and looked great, are you keeping this one or selling?
I'm glad it provoked some happy memory's, I will probably be selling it on, I'd love to keep them all, I just don't have the space. This was all about getting it back on the road and to a new owner that will truly appreciate it.
Great video. What are the torque settings for the engine mount??
I can't be exact on this. I tightened the smaller bolts 40NM + 1/4 turn and the larger ones 60NM + 1/4 turn or 90 degrees. If not tightened enough, it will knock on start-up. be sure not to over-tighten the bracket to engine bolts as You are going into alloy I also found this in the Haynes Manual Right-hand mounting: Engine bracket-to-engine bolts: NM-Lbf ft Long bolts 48 35 Short bolts 24 17 Mounting-to-body bolts: Long bolts 58 43 Short bolt 63 46 Mounting-to-engine bracket bolts 58 43
@ thank you so very much im doing this job today 👍🏻
@@dukeofdevon5608 I hope it goes well.
Hello, what happens if i fail to install the belt a bit off the initial timing just on the fuel pump ? Does it works good after?
@MarcosBarcelosSpearfishing to the best of my knowledge, the fuel pump is not timed, as long as the crank and cam are perfectly timed, that was the main thing. This was the case for mine. Hope this helps.
I’m currently undertaking a ground up re-design (including wire wheel conversion) of my 1990 XJ900F and will look forward to seeing what you do to yours. I replaced most of the clutch components when I had the engine apart. One of the springs in the shock absorber mechanism in the back of the clutch basket had snapped. It must have had a hard life to do that! My only worry is that the clutch pull on these bikes seems fairly heavy and with a slightly arthritic left hand I might find this a bit of a pain, literally! I’d dearly love to find a hydraulic conversion if there is one. I’ve done this to other older bikes and the difference is incredible. Best wishes and a Happy New Year!
Thank you for your comment, I two find the clutch heavy to operate, I'm going to have a look at the cable as this will add additional resistance when dry. please keep me updated on your progress. best wishes and a Happy new year to you also. Regards Alex
I have a 99. Absolute missile.
@gdfggggg they really are!
I remember balancing these up, I heated up the intake rubbers to make it easier to put them back on
@@thewiltshirerider01 I'm going to do just that.
Is kielder U.K. made?
@scottwhitley3392 Yes, it is, Yorkshire based, I believe.
I use the following method to free up stuck clutch plates in classic air cooled motorcycles that have been sitting for years in storage. Start the bike on existing oil/filter and bring up to running temp then turn of and dump the oil and replace with fresh oil & filter. Then run bike again until running temp. Turn bike off. With bike on the ground select 2nd or third gear and "slowly" move the bike back and forth with clutch lever pulled and you will slowly start seeing some movement as the hot oil works through the plates. This may take 10-30 minutes until the bike rolls freely. Only then do you start the bike in neutral, pull clutch in and select 1st gear. If not stuck nothing will change. If the engine stalls then repeat the process.
@theaustralianconundrum that's fantastic. Thank you, I'll remember that for the nest one.
I look at these bikes now and can recall when they were new on the dealers floors. Yes, I am that old! Good memories. And to think that rather subtle looking Yamaha made 98bhp and would do a 12 sec 1/4 mile totally stock! Now THAT is an impressive power to weight ratio given this XJ900 weighed 500 lbs we get 392bhp per ton. I still have my original 1998 R1 bough new and it claimed 150bhp (at crank) @ 437lbs to give 690bhp per ton. Have a great 2025 mate! From Australia.....
@theaustralianconundrum thank you , and to you also, I'm pleased this gave you a trip down memory lane. I personally love 90s bikes, and in 2025, I hope to work on many more. Thank you for sharing your memories.
Ticking noise and lower compression on two cylinders my ZZR1100 needs shims investigating. At least we dont need to remove the camshafts. 🙂🙂🙂🙂👍👍👍👍 Thanks for your video. 😎😎😎
@vazza7504 a loose tappet, is a happy tappet. Thank you for the comment. And good luck sorting yours.
💯👊
Nice video, im new to clutches too and recently worked on a mates bike where a spring came out the clutch basket and i found it in the sump... so ive been in the same boat with troublesome clutches haha
@HodgeAutomotive thank you for the comment, I love doing these videos, it's a journey of discovery everytime. It sounds like you were lucky with that spring.
@@10MilMoto I've recently started making videos and I know exactly what you mean, figuring things out is the most fun part for me. Yeah very lucky, it was very chewed up though but the guy who owned the bike just wanted me to put it all back together, seemed to run/ride fine after though, who knows what lasting damage it did though...
@HodgeAutomotive it is fun, the fixing and restoration has been a part of my life for a long time, filming and editing is the new bit, well worth the effort and time put in. Especially when I get comments. I'll be sure to check out your channel.
Looking get this model XR, had a big off on my KTM 1290 SAS which was written off. Compression burst on my L1 lumbar which required pinning, but I'm up walking and on the mend, need to get back riding, albeit at a slower pace. I'm 5'7" short with a 28" inside leg. Not sure to order a new bike as a factory low build or wait and get one on a 23 or 24 plate hopefully bought as a low build. Doesn't seem many of them about! What inside leg are you? As I see you can almost flat foot the bike and a low build and std seat. Safe riding.
I’m glad you’re on the mend, it sounds like a horrendous experience. The factory low versions are indeed quite a bit rarer. As I mentioned in the video, I opted for the standard seat instead of the low seat just to give my leg a little more stretch. With the low seat, I was just about able to flat-foot, but as it is now, I’m careful to go slow when scooting around or backing up. For reference, I think I’m around a 28-inch inside leg. I hope your recovery continues to go well, and thank you for taking the time to comment.
Great video. Eager to find out which one of those carbs is leaching fuel - definitely a seat or float issue.
Thank you. I am looking forward to discovering which one is passing fuel. Hopefully, it's just as you say.
Get a REAL motorcycle like Royal Enfield here in India.
A manually hand impact driver is a must to work on motorcycles.
@altonlynch5464 ironically, I have one, just forgot in the moment!
One of Kawasaki's finest
@@GPR111 I totally agree.
Have a 1999 D7, fitted a superbike conversion to take the weight off my ageing wrists, and a rear shock to stop the seat beating the hell out of me. The engine is bonkers fast, realistically about 130bhp not the 157 as advertised, change up at 6k and let the torque fire you down the road. I've used mine for scratching around Wales and Scotland, a bit of a mission to get to Scotland but worth the pain once you get up there. I fitted Brembo's all round, including brake and clutch master cylinders and a 4-1 exhaust. All were for aesthetics rather than needing to be upgraded. If you're considering one try to find a bike that has no telltale signs of being crashed or dropped on it's side, the engines have a bad habit of letting go on number 3 big end when starved of oil, the cost of repairing would probably be more than the bikes worth, and of course, you could face the same problem with a replacement motor.
Thank you for the comment and the wise words, I love to hear ownership stories.
The newer zzr’s had an extra oil pipe fitted that solved the starvation problem.
@@gdfggggg Myth, all the ZZR's suffered the same problem. The oil return from the top end is too slow, leading to starvation at the crank. The best option without major work is to run 4ltrs of oil and fit a cut-out switch to kill the motor should the bike go down.
@joebloggs1317 Thank you for the comment, I too have made some adjustments as age is catching up with me, mainly the handle bar conversation. I just love the bike and always will. Maintenance is key IMO.
I remember the '80s very well. I was 21 in 1980. I had a brand new '82 XJ650, known as the Seca 650. Nice all around bike, upright riding position. Not a crotch rocket, but handled very well, and was comfortable enough to actually ride somewhere. It was also shaft drive. Silver with blue and white stripes.
I hope this will bring back some great memories for you. It was a great era.
I currently own an XJ 900 Division, previously I owned an XJ750 Seca. I'm a big fan of the XJ's, and shaft drive.
I have to say it's glowing no me. And I agree the shaft drives are fantastic.
Shaft drive cool . Make a good little two up summer tourer .
@@gazzertrn The shaft drive is cool, I had one on my 535 Virgo. This will make a great bike.
I also do most of my own servicing in my garden and it has its challenges especially in the winter, but I do like what you are achieving 👍
Thank you, it is a challenge at times.
I had one of those for about 3 years and absolutely loved it, I loved the way it lifted the rear end with the drive shaft and those dials, wonderful

My 1999 zzr has a slight ticking on start up but once the engine is warm the noise goes.
@kaleemmajid2707 Most likely, that's the valve gaps. That was how mine started.
I've had it for couple of years. Very good bike but not one for the thrill seekers I guess, but don't get it wrong, it's a fast bike.
@herrhardi kinda how I feel. I'm going to be looking for a trade-in sometime.
It was a great day. We're on the end of the video. 😂😂
Top, super ☝
I rode a F900 last year on loan whilst my bike was getting a firmware update. Liked the bike nice engine and handling but the standard screen was no good for me and no matter where I put the screen it blasted the wind full force into my helmet, I am a bit taller just over 6 foot. The performance is well suited to the road it does have a 3.6 seconds to 60 that really isn’t slow not sure why you would need faster.
It is a nice bike, I agree, the standard screen is not worth it. The MRA is the best I've used.
which company are the engine bars? i bought the latest bike and i am not sure if we can install the engine bar with engine fairing we get in the new bike , also is it better to get engine bars or engine/pump protector
The bars are a cheap set from Ali express, from memory, as for bars vs. pump protection, IMO, the bars offer more protection over the protector only offering scratch resistance. However, anything is better than nothing.
If possible can you provide me the link of the aliexpress link
@PratapaSiva I can't find the exact one, just do a search on there Web site. Look at the reviews before purchasing. You always take a chance with such sites IMO
Its my first bike and love mine, that savage fun pulling the throttle is just something out of this world. Its not just the performance, the sound and the whole package what makes it amazzing.
@flyingjudgement I couldn't agree more.
Nice commentary. I bought one in January and i am absolutely satisfied, the only change i made is wunderlich low seat and it was a win win change . The previous seat was the standard ,i am 175cm amd with the wunderlich seat i reach the ground with both feet flat. About the fire 🔥 you mentioned i think that the dynamic pro mode with the proper customization can give you some big balls of fire 😅! Enjoy sport touring!
@takisdimp Thank you for the comment l, I appreciate it. Is is a cracking g bike.

Hi, It was an ebay purchase similar to this one. Item number 285158168236
Please tell me the parts you used and where you boight from ?
Sorry I missed your comment. The part was from Ebay, a seller in Germany. I ordered the complete pulley.
Hello I’ve just subscribed to your channel nice clean service particularly like the cardboard chute good idea,I’ve got a really good tip for you because I can change a drop link in one minute flat start to finish and the way I do it is very simple because you don’t need the nuts to just tighten them with impact gun they simply snap off so no need to clean or lubricate just snap em off😂
@richlee5578 I'll give that a go next time. Thank you for watching and subscribing, it's appreciated.
You are on the wrong side of the road for me. Nice bike
Lol, you're not the first person to mention this. Thanks for the comment 👍
Where did you get the screen wind deflector?
@aussietiger From memory, it was amazon. The main screen is MRA.
I loved my ZZR1100D3 I got it directly after having owned an FJ1200abs. It was interesting having two iconic 'super tourers' back to back. I think the ZZR was kinda called a sport/tourer? They are both bikes I wish I's owned whilst still living in Europe. They are both 'continent destroyers' 100mph all day, every day. You are correct on the weight and size, but that was what made them so good for distance, room, comfortable, stability. The Zed was far better for handling/braking than the FJ, but then it was a decade on in frame/suspension technology. However I would 'disagree' on one point, torque!. Lets be quite clear to any reader, the ZZR would 'destroy' the FJ for outright performance, as you said, hit 6000rpm? And you are riding a missile!! For me, that was where the ZZR 'fell short' compared. I loved the FJ's sheer grunt, literally 1500rpm in 5th and it would simply pull. But of course the FJ had nowhere near the utter top end, or the 'missile' acceleration. My 'ideal'? Looking back would have been the FJ lump in the ZZR frame. Or, I had known of the ZZR based Gpz1100, A 'detuned' ZZR but in an inferior? Metal frame (never rode one, so have no idea if it had similar torque delivery to the FJ). The FJ just made you lazy, turn the throttle in any gear and it was 'gone'.. but yeh drop a cog or two on the ZZR, and it was like comparing a Spitfire to an English Electric Lightning. I'd say the Zed still has a place today, as a mature/older rider's motorcycle, for a serious distance mount.
@19Graywulf very well said, thank you for commenting.
Easy to follow. Purchase my Z in the 90s, though it's been stored in the garage since 2009. Now wishing to bring back to life and with footage like yours helps. Keep it up .
@richierich5445 thank you, that means alot.
The handlebars were the first thing I noticed. I have kept mine standard as I find it very comfortable. I have also fitted the 6 pot calipers and whilst better than the originals they also require regular servicing to stay effective. Have you rotated the concentric adjusters? If you enjoy cornering it makes a huge difference to the turn in. I have been riding the 1100 since 1995 and there is something special about the bike that causes the rider to have a stupid grin on their face every time they get off the bike. I find that many riders are scared to ride it because it has no ABS/TC and they have been brought up with that technology. I am lucky to have a ZZR 1100, ZX12R and a ZX14R and whilst are all great bikes there is just something special about the ZZR. Enjoy your bike mate. 🙂
I did like the bike with the clip on bars. I just found the CNC riser and the rental bar slightly more comfortable, I have ajused the consentric for height, but I haven't considered ajusting for turning in, I'll look into this. And I agree, the smile is always present with each and every ride.
@@10MilMoto The concentric adjusters should be rotated 180 degrees. The difference is considerable. The down side is that it increases seat height and when the bike is on the center stand the rear wheel still touches the ground. I use a plank of wood under the stand to get rear wheel clearance. It is worth it if you are a bend chaser but if not, it is probably better to keep the adjusters in the normal position mate.
@@MichaelZZRrider thank you for this, I'll have a look.
Hi my ride is a modified gpz750r it has a 1000rx motor and is a complete animal loads of fun and completely ridable with only one mode twist and go it is currently undergoing a metamorphosis by gaining zzr1100 forks and wheels and swingarm and maybe even zzr1100 cylinder barrels. Letssee what happens
@TheBlibo sounds like a lot of work, one help of a project. Sounds amazing.
@10MilMoto hi I enjoy modifying as much as riding just get the picture in my head and make it And that picture is mostly cafe racers
@TheBlibo it takes talent to be able to do that. And the payoff is stepping back and looking at what you've achieved.
Hi You dont need to preach to the converted i have ridden new machines and old and the best compromise from my worms eye view is the 80s/ 90s machines as they had more than adequate performance. I dont undersand having a set of different driving modes just learn to use your throttle as you had to before 1990
