The Smile's Albums REVIEWED » Radiohead spinoff, Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, Tom Skinner
What follows is the complete supercut of my album reviews for The Smile. Of course, there's only 3 albums at this point, so I've included some bonus material at the end.
The Smile has been a goldrush for impatient Radiohead fans like myself. Three albums in three years, chock full of material that rivals Radiohead's best moments. However, given that 2026 would mark the tenth anniversary of Radiohead's last album, A Moon Shaped Pool, my guess is the band will be back in the studio next year, if they aren't already, and we might not hear from The Smile again for some time.
Or...maybe not! Perhaps Radiohead is a thing of the past, and the rest of the band members are perfectly content to collect royalty checks and let Thom and Jonny do their thing. That wouldn't be the worst scenario, considering just how creatively refreshed and recharged The Smile sounds.
I'm just not dying for another Radiohead album at the moment, mainly because so much of The Smile rivals the best stuff from Radiohead's last 3 albums. Another tour? Sure! But let's face it, with all due respect to Ed, Colin, and Phil, Thom and Jonny are the Mick and Keith of the Radiohead operation. So if instead of another Radiohead album in the next few years we get 2 or 3 more Smile albums, I can live with that.
Alright - without further ado, here are my reviews. I hope they put a smile on your face!

Great coverage on The Smile! Definitely an unexpected gem to hit the 2020's. In case y'all are looking for more rock artists with a rich history like Radiohead, some of my recommendations: Julian Casablancas' work in The Strokes and The Voidz. Lots to bite on alternative and experimental rock wise. Credited for popularizing skinny jeans in the 2000's rock revival! Their MTV $2 Dollar Bill 2002 Concert is a good dive-in for truly capturing the luster that The Strokes' debut 2001 album which may not stand out at first especially how far rock has evolved since these basics. Albert Hammond Jr. as the lead guitarist of The Strokes. Similar to The Smile and Radiohead albeit with chronological overlap, his solo works give an interesting consolidated perspective on his influences as the guitarist over the years in The Strokes. Alex Turner's work in the Arctic Monkeys and The Last Shadow Puppets. A great artist development to hear in real time from punky rock to a more melancholy jazzy sound in recent years. His partner in The Last Shadow Puppets, Miles Kane, also has his own catalog of showtune-y sound that definitely has pushed forward Alex Turner's own sound. Cage The Elephant is in a similar boat as Alex Turner, starting off with punk rock sounds and nowadays in a more mellow almost futuristic sound. The best spice in this mix is Matt Shultz's southern accent on sounds more associated with the previous artists' like NY Rock and British Rock. Of course, I can keep going on with The Interpol, Franz Ferdinand, and so on but those are my personal favorites. The 2000's rock revival is just such a gold mine for that right place, right time bands that carry a unique twist to the classic drummer, bassist, multiple guitars, and frontman rock composition. Worth a dive especially to put the decades into context against historical bands like Radiohead who were active during the time period as well. Hint, explains why In Rainbows took jarring risks like being a self-released (indie) free to download release in the midst of huge indie bands sprawling from file sharing and MySpace popularity.

Glad I subbed and caught this ASAP! I definitely agree the album name and content feel conflicting. It may have more to do with the album’s trend of being missing, lost, or confused as a “cutout” and the art looking like an orb staring at a distant lookalike of itself. Foreign Spies, Zero Sum, No Words, and all the lyrical references like “I’m not the killer” in Don’t Get Me Started. I heard either Radiohead’s drummer or bassist hinted that they have no plans on more bonus/deluxe albums (RIP Bends 30th). May be signs of a new album in the works finally. Looking forward to catch up with your podcast!

I feel Zwan, Zeitgeist and Machina are underrated. I hope the reissused versions show the albums true power. Agree with you on Shiny and Monuments. I feel Atum was overblown, weak Act I, also feel you are not giving proper love to Aghori - a return to form in my eyes

I suggest also touching on the sudden third album they released, Cutouts! I felt that it was a lot more cohesive than Wall of Eyes but that’s mostly my bias for its more electronic/digital sound. I’ve especially been hooked on the synth-like riffs by Greenwood on Zero Sum and Eyes and Mouth. Reminds me of that early 2010’s alt rock guitar emulating a synth sound from the likes of Comedown Machine by The Strokes and Right Thoughts Right Words Right Action by Franz Ferdinand.

I apologise for the length of this comment but I love expressing my opinions about my favourite bands and U2 is certainly one of them; I'm very young and I got to U2 through my dad who loved their popular stuff and introduced me to their classics at a very young age; this year I finally got to listen to their whole discography and encounter some gems I had never heard before. Now I finally have an opinion on each one of their albums, so I'll just say those in the shortest way possible: Boy is a great debut in my opinion, it's not exactly my music taste but I absolutely love the first three songs, especially I Will Follow I'm not a great fan of October and I agree that it is worse than Boy, although I still love a couple of songs, especially Is That All? and With A Shout In terms of War I absolutely agree, it's a great record with great singles and great lesser known tracks; I'm a big fan of Seconds, but my favourite songs overall would be Two Hearts Beat As One and New Year's Day The Unforgettable Fire is an absolute masterpiece, one of my favourite U2 albums; I just think it's incredibly beautiful and captures a lot of feelings that are otherwise difficult to capture; my favourites on that one are A Sort Of Homecoming, Pride and Bad The Joshua Tree is also a great album, however to be honest I don't enjoy most of the non-singles a whole lot; still there are some great songs, such as my favourite Bullet The Blue Sky; in terms of singles I adore Where The Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For and In God's Country I must agree that Rattle And Hum is a missed opportunity; I love God Part II, Angel Of Harlem, Heartland and All I Want Is You, but not only is the genre not really what I'd normally listen to, the album does feel confusing when U2 songs are mixed with covers, live versions and even the American national anthem Achtung Baby is an album that deserves all the love it gets; it's not my favourite U2 album but it's definitely close to this title and I agree that it's a masterpiece in terms of reinvention; I especially love the tracks Acrobat and Until The End Of The World Zooropa is actually a record I don't like, I feel like it's a bit too dark and eerie for me, but I still enjoy a couple songs, such as the title track, Stay and The First Time Pop is an album I have mixed feelings about and I don't particularly love it; to be honest I really dislike the second half of the album (with the exception of Gone), but I think the first half is really underrated; the album contains two songs I absolutely love: Last Night On Earth and Gone (which is my favourite U2 song overall) All That You Can't Leave Behind is a bit too much light, I will agree, but I still really enjoy it, and though I really dislike the last two songs on it, I still love Beautiful Day, Wild Honey, When I Look At The World, Walk On and others as well How To Assemble An Atomic Bomb is one of my favourites, because I actually knew a lot of the songs on it prior to listening to the entire U2 discography (thanks to my dad liking this album); my favourite is Yahweh, but I'm also a big fan of All Because Of You, Crumbs From Your Table and City Of Blinding Lights No Line On The Horizon might just be my favourite U2 album, I love its sound and its sort of Arabic vibe; I basically love all the songs (with the exceptions of Cedars Of Lebanon and Get On Your Boots), my favourites being Magnificent, I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight, Stand Up Comedy, Breathe, Unknown Caller and FEZ / Being Born Songs Of Innocence is another one of my favourites, I think it's a great combination of U2's 80s sound with some newer elements and it contains in my opinion one of the greatest streaks of five songs in a row (those being The Miracle, Every Breaking Wave, California, Song For Someone and Iris); it also contains the song Cedarwood Road which is my favourite from this album and my second favourite U2 song Finally, I agree on Songs Of Experience; I dislike this album, I'm not a fan of the majority of the tracks, it sounds way too "poppy" and artificial; there are two songs I love though, those being Get Out Of Your Own Way (cause I have great memories with it) and my favourite from the album, The Blackout Absolutely great video I really enjoyed it

The saving grace for me with October is the production and mixing- not perfect, by any stretch, but I love the way it sounds. It’s personal.

  • @horrorhands666
    @horrorhands666 3 дні тому

For me, October is one of the most underrated albums - Gloria, Rejoice, Fire and With a Shout still pack a punch but the whole thing is a joy to listen to. War is my favorite album and I completely agree with your appraisal of it. The whole thing is fantastic but it’s the lesser known songs that are the real gems on there. Seconds and Surrender are my favorites too but I adore the whole album. The Joshua Tree is good but I always thought Mothers of the Disappeared was a weak end to the album. Too slow and morose. Rattle and Hum is a strange one. Overall, it’s a terrible album, but is peppered with some astoundingly good songs (Heartland, Desire, Angel of Harlem, All I Want Is You). Great to hear some love for Lemon! Great video, really enjoyed this 👍

I know many feel this way, but for me, it doesn’t live up to what it aims for.

Not entirely memorable? Totally disagree. When this was released in the 70s there was such a huge vibe about it. It was totally different to what others were doing and even punks at mŷ school were buying it although they did so discreetly! It was very much a game changer on the British music scene

Interesting - thanks for the perspective. For me, it doesn’t have the same vibe as the other Police records, but I can see how it would have been loved when it first came out.

My man you need to memorize your script instead of looking the other way causing a distraction you should have your teleprompter above the camera so you can see it That way your eyes are straight at the camera when you're talking to the people just giving you my observation of what I'm seeing. Of course things will get better over time and you will get better at what you're doing keep up a good work!

absolutely phenomenal opinion. I listened to this a while ago and didn't really find any appeal of it but I came back to it and it really, really clicked for me. This album is so awesome

Zooropa I bought on the day it came out and it has some interesting stuff. Numb and Lemon in particular. I still get the feeling that it’s very much a collection of U2 experimenting on the road with Eno and while I agree it’s not as good as Achtung it’s certainly better than most of the albums released that year. I also really like the Passengers album that came after this.

Loved this album when it came out. Loved Achtung Baby, too. I can remember being very excited in 1991 when it dropped, and 2 years later when Zooropa came out, U2 was bigger than ever, with almost every previous album being absolute gold. We all were confused by the title track, but it still brings back very positive memories!

Probably my favourite of theirs. After calling themselves pop for the previous decade, they finally decided to write some catchy songs. And came up with 11 of them. Grace is such a beautiful song to end on. Love this album.
