Smashing Pumpkins was my favorite album in HS. That was the MCIS years. You said you want to explore their later stuff, I'd recommend stopping after Machina.
I kinda liked it, I was probably early 20's when that came out. It's was way off from the MCIS and Siamese dream vibes. If you give Adore a listen, that was a pretty dark album Corgan released after his mom died. It's still good. I used to (still do) listen to it while going to sleep. There's not much heavy metal that will wake you up. Zwan was created a few years later, and they made more upbeat stuff to offset the heavy depressive mode of both Adore and Machina. They were morphing into Emo music before My Chemical Romance and Fallout boy got there. It was a thing, but people didn't really know where it was going, and I think they tapped the market 2-3 years before it was ready to mature.
@@bradeurich5183 adore had four bangers (for me) and that was it. I liked about as many songs as the gish album. My gf bought me gish for my birthday on cassette when it came out and I hated it …. Then SD came out and I still thought they sucked I was into Skinny Puppy and Nirvana. It wasn’t till MCATIS dropped that the Pumpkins grabbed me and I loved most of it. Didn’t like another till Oceania. Billy sounds like big bird singing on the bulk of his songs and it drives me crazy 😜
Wow ! great video ! So, I heard SP in about June of 91, via MTV's 120 Minutes, I saw the I am one video and thought it was great. I went out and got Gish, and it floored me, such a fantastic LP. Of course, they followed up with Siamese Dream, which was even more amazing. And Mellon Collie came out, and it just lost me. There was some stuff on it I really liked, and parts of it just bored me. I ended up catching that tour twice, and they were amazing shows, but the LP still was not grabbing me fully. Finally, one day in summer of 2000, I came home from work late at night one night, and was bored. I pulled out my Mellon Collie CD and played it front to back, and it finally hit me just right !!!!
Yeah, if you love their early stuff, I feel like you just have to be in the right state of mind to surrender to the overwhelming ambition of Mellon Collie. It took me a while, but I get it now.
@@beardsofkentucky But that's the thing, it IS their early stuff, just a more expanded and fuller produced version of it !!!! It's like they threw Gish and Siamese Dream in a blender, added a few odds and ends, and turned it on, and out came Mellon Collie !!!! I tell you, I especially hated "1979" and now, it's one of my all time fave songs.
Man you def were more of a Indy type guy pumpkins lost that crowd when they signed with virgin after Gish and apparently cherub rock was corgans F U to the Indy hipster crowd . Hard to say what could be a fav track off MCIS … like you said there a track a feeling a lyric a riff for every youth emotion on that ablum. I think I would probably have to say Tonight tonight. Any time that song comes on radio I listen to it straight through. I can never tire of it and blew my mind first time I heard it at 15. Thru the eyes of ruby really takes you along on a journey wow the music on that track. Ode to no one is the perfect angst song… that solo is so chaotic and the notes corgan hits just feel like they are ripping you apart then putting you back together .. amazing! Stumbeline is another beautiful acoustic ballad. Where boys fear to tread is so heavy metal and love how the guitars grind in on one another making you wait to your ears get that solid riff! Jellybelly ! Just heavy heavy heavy a absolute strummer to hammer out. Funny I like what you said about Simese. I was late to that party too didn’t pick up that album till probably 1998. But listened to gish and Pisces over and over. I knew the singles disarm cherub.. couldn’t care about em… but wow when I heard hummer, thay outro with the guitars . Soma when the build up finally happens and Yiur thrown through a wall of guitar sound! Geek USA the most insane drumming one could ever hear ! Silverfuck just when you think the album is winding down and over billy grabs you and shakes you up good! Space boy … about his special needs brother a love song to a sibling. Everyone’s favourite mayonnaise that James co wrote and you know both of them are playing toward one another. Hopefully you’ll cover more albums . Would love to hear your take on Gish
Haha, yeah, I was definitely an indie kinda guy in the mid-to-late 90's. I remember liking the Pumpkins early on, but they were too mainstream by the time Mellon rolled around. Glad I've been able to rediscover and appreciate them now. Definitely plan to cover more albums and songs, both by the Pumpkins and by all of my other favorite bands (SO MANY).
Takes a long time to appreciate this album fully.
Word
Greatest album of all time imo
It’s a goodun no doubt

I understand, but actually really enjoy Oceania and am starting to enjoy the other later stuff. What do you think of Zwan?
Oceania is a masterpiece waaaaay better than Machina
🙌

Nice take on this work.
Thanks!

Epic album. Mastering is poor though.
Serious question: how can you tell? I’m not attuned to mastering quality, but I’d like to know how that is manifest in your ears.
