The Smoothest Apple CarPlay Experience? MINIX CP89-HD Review
can you get a different wiring harness???
What do you mean?
It's a big job but you got it!
I like the new, brighter LED lights better! Why pay the dealership when you can buy the lights and do it yourself. Thanks for the video.
True! I'm not even sure if the dealership would be willing to install LEDs in place of the original bulbs
My 1994 Mazda B2300 has 455,000 miles (732,251 km) on the original engine and transmission, and it's still running strong. I think it's time to take it to a Mazda dealer and see if I can get some kind of award! Anyway, great video.
I don't know if Mazda has a mileage award, but that's really impressive! Maybe you can have a custom badge made
The upgrade looks amazing! It makes the truck look so much more modern than the old halogen bulbs.
Thanks! It worked out really well.
Can you do the same with youre Mercedes?
This is an awesome solution to my quest to add CarPlay to my 2005 Cooper S. Been told the same “can’t be done” story multiple times. THANK YOU for the info.
How Much ?
It looks like it's about $170 on amazon right now with a coupon - there's a link in the video description!
Can this be done without a scanner? I urgently need to replace my rear struts but I have no scanner
Without a scanner you would have to be careful when you crack the air lines since they won't be depressurized. To air the system back up with the new struts, I would recommend supporting the car off the ground with the wheels touching the ground - do not lower it all the way without air in the struts to avoid damaging them.
What is the model of the scanner shown on the video?
It's an Autel Maxisys Elite. There are also other scan tools that can control and monitor the air suspension system.
The Autel Elite is very expensive. Will something like the MUCAR VO6 or ANCEL DS160 work? or something else you can recommend? Amazing video by the way! Already recommended your video in a w220 FB group that Im part of.
Thank you for sharing the video, I really appreciate it! For a scanner: I recently tested the Launch Creader Elite for Land Rover, and this is the equivalent one for Mercedes: amzn.to/3DqwsYI While I haven't tested this Mercedes one specifically, it had all the functions for the Range Rovers I have. I also just received a different scan tool for Mercedes that I will be testing soon in a video!
Nick, how do you feel about the car in general? You recommend owning one? I'm fairly mechanically inclined so I can do regular and heavier maintenance but I just want to know if it's worth owning since my dad and I really like these and the later generation of them.
This is very much worth owning! I´ve owned one for 9 years, and it´s been great.I still love driving it as much as ever.I´ve done repairs like this, but there is nothing fundamentally wrong with this model, just some typical issues that anyone can fix - if you are willing to study the car and make repairs.High mileage or age is not important if the car is well maintenanced. The early ones (1999-2002)are as good as the later ones(unlike you´ve been told),only they were more prone to rust.Still, there are rustless and rusty cars no matter what year.Look for a well kept car with a maintenance and repair documents.
I'm a big fan of the W220, it's a great car to drive! If you're willing to get your hands dirty and you find a reasonably cared for car, I think it's a good option. They're well documented, and there are still a fair amount of them on the road, which speaks to their durability! At this age, they're all going to need some work, but it sounds like that's something you are ready for.
@@matsujarvinen Appreciate in the input. I see these cars always left on the side just because the Airmatic system failed which sucks, but at least it's cheaper for me to buy and do some work.
@@frenchineer I appreciate the input for this. I own a 2005 760Li so I'm familiar with German car shenanigans and have a lot of tools for work so it will all come down to part costs basically. Tho I just gotta be careful with the harnesses around the engine bay as they're probably really brittle at this point. Who knows, might find a steal one day when looking for these!
@@vermili0138 Airmatic is simple and durable system, but some component may fail after 20 years.Or,in many cases, the owner is to blame. There´s a little rubber hose between a filter and the compressor.Eventually it breaks and the moisture gets to the compressor and valveblock. So,a cheap part and a bad owner can cause an Airmatic failure.
fixed it in 5 mins with your help on my w203 c220cdi,in my case i used a ziptie through the hole of the pin, thanks!!
Nice!
I love that it also works as a mirror, that you can make it wider, split the screen AND it responds to voice commands as well ! Very versatile. Cool!! Love it.Thanks for the video
Thanks for watching! It's a neat setup
That clicking sound would drive me crazy. It's good to know how to fix it.
It does stop on its own eventually, but it'll definitely be nice to have quiet and a fully functioning HVAC system once it's fixed!
@frenchineer I'll be watching!!!
Bought this and love it, except when I manually adjust for screen brightness it automatically reverts to a dimmer setting. I assume this is due to the ambient light sensor. Where is this sensor on the unit?
I'm not sure, I'll have to check. Minix has released updated firmware so that could be something to try to address this
My car supports only wired Carplay. Can I have wireless Android Auto with this unit?
I believe this only adapts wired carplay to wireless carplay or wired Android Auto to wireless. There are some "AI box" adapters that connect to wired CarPlay cars and let you use wireless Android Auto, but I haven't tested any from Sunweyer.
Mercedes really should have made those gear out of something more durable
I agree, especially with it mounted in a hard to reach place!
Do the microphone and answer / hang up buttons now work on the steering wheel or do you need to use the touchscreen to make/receive calls?
You should be able to program them like the volume buttons as long as they don't also serve any functions for the dash displays
Does Launch have one for AUDI cars
They do! There's this one which is like the one I reviewed (affiliate link) amzn.to/4iz9Jd9
Which generation matches the Audis.
For an Audi you'd have to find an option specific to the model, the camera I listed is only for this generation of Mercedes C-Class
Good and clear instructions thanks
Thank you!
Have you changed the sparkplug on her if so did you gap them and what was the gap
We did! We bought compatible ones from the parts store and left the gap as it was out of the box.
Hey, if I’m planning to have a Range Rover long term, would having the GAP IID Tool be beneficial over this? I know that one is a lot pricier, maybe 3x the cost but would you say it’s justified?
This tool would have let me do all the jobs I did for both of my Range Rover rebuilds! If you’re trying to do diy repairs and keep a Range Rover on the road this one should be enough.
Very useful,Many thanks!
Good video as usual. Thanks for the tip on the vacuum refill for the coolant. I have done this TB service a few times and the refill takes quite a bit of time. This will speed up the process. On start up I immediately heard the power steering pump singing. There is a very easy method to flush the system and that system needs it. If you ever need to do it on a P2, contact me to give you the tips.
Thanks!
Hi, did you finally fix the transmission leak on your LR3 ? And so where was the leak coming from and how did you fix it? I also have a leak on my transmission and I’m about to do the same. Thanks!
In my case it ended up being the transfer case seal, which was from some unknown (and unusual!) damage inside the transfer case. Because of time and workspace constraints, the transfer case was actually replaced by a specialist. For your transmission leak I recommend checking the fill plug, drain plug, wiring connector, and the edge of the transmission pan where it meets the transmission to figure out where it might be leaking from. You will probably have to remove the heat shield to get a better view.
@ thank you!
Hi, I am curious as to why you use a USB connection to the unit with your phone rather than Bluetooth?
For Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, this unit requires a wired connection. It is possible that current versions of this unit include wireless AA/CarPlay by default.
Hi Nick, thank you for the video! Was it sponsored by Navtool? Reason I ask is they get really bad marks for customer service, abd ease of installation, but I have to admit your video makes it look great! Curious how you’re liking it since the install.
Hi! This wasn't sponsored, I purchased it myself! I had seen their original install guide and expected to need to splice into the coax cable as they did, but the new cables were a nice surprise. I also thought I would need to add a wireless CarPlay/AA dongle, but like you saw in the video that wasn't necessary. I've been enjoying it so far! The main limitation is the resistive touchscreen which is not as responsive as more modern screens, but it's worth the tradeoff to me since it retains all the other factory displays. Let me know if you have any other questions!
@@frenchineer hey man, thank you so much for replying! Love your videos! I've got an 09 L322... and I'm buying my daughter an old C Class W204, so I've been watching a lot of you videos. Keep it up!
Navtool is essentially a scam company. Worse than used car salesmen. Only reason to buy the product is because it's the only option lol. Dealing with them is essentially dealing with the russian mafia.
Great video I want to change my factory radio too, I have a question do you need to change something in the car trunk( audio gateway control unit and cd reader) in order to fit the system properly? Thanks in advance. I have the same bose amplifier mercedes S430 2006.
No, I didn't need to change anything in the trunk for this install!
@frenchineer thanks
Hey I bought this unit and I'm having issues in my r53 mini, do you have a contact or anything? Because all of my interior button lights and dash lights don't work at all yet everything else functionality still works, dome lights, indicators etc, it's literally just interior lighting for buttons and dash board. any advice would be very helpful
I'm not sure what could be causing those issues. It looks like in some cases a loose connector behind the dash has caused that, so it could be something to check for.
This video is by far the best one for this mount replacement on YT. 3 questions I have. My 07 S60 2.5T is the same as your XC. Do you think it's a good idea to pull out the fan housing for easy access on the front lower mount? And should I remove the screws for the OTE pipe and pull the pipe out of the turbo so it doesn't pull on the pipe when jacking up the engine? Lastly, I have concerns with the CV axles when lifting the engine. Especially the passenger side axle that has the carrier bearing mounted to the engine block. Is this me overthinking what I might damage when lifting the engine? Please give me your opinion. BTW,, I subscribed to this channel because it's very well done.
Thank you! Regarding the fan housing, if you think it's not too much work, I think it would give you a bit more room to work in! For the pipe, it's up to you. The turbo is mounted to the engine so the pipe would probably be ok, but you can remove it for extra peace of mind. I don't know how different the engine bay is in the S60, so it might help you for space as well. I didn't see any mention of the CV axles when I researched the procedures, and I didn't notice any issues while doing the job. Thanks for subscribing, I appreciate it!
@@frenchineer Thanks for the reply. My concern about the OTE pipe is the connection to the intercooler hose next to the radiator. I don't want to pull on that connection and possibly crack the plastic inlet elbow on the IC. And if you ever had to replace that hose, the clamp is difficult to get a good straight shot at. Therefore removing the OTE pipe at the turbo and the 2 torx screws that secure the pipe in place will let the pipe have some play so that it can't pull on that hose connection. I am just thinking this through before I attack the job. I hope you grab another P2 Volvo for more videos because yours are better than any others.
That makes sense - I think there should be some flex there by design since the engine can move relative to the body/intercooler, but raising the engine for the mounts is probably outside the expected range of motion. It would be cool to have another Volvo on the channel in the future. I like the C30, but we'll see what comes up!
Can anyone help!I have a Toyota rav 4 2018 hybrid model. When I plug the wireless android auto usb and connect it with my phone nothing shows on the screen!
Does Android Auto work with a wired connection directly to your phone?
@frenchineer No,i dont think that year supports android auto
The dongle only converts existing wired Android Auto to wireless, unfortunately it can't add Android Auto
Excellent work! Very precise directions and detailed specification for torque etc. Most helpful craftsmanship.
Thank you!
Thanks! Great tutorial that I will be using!
Awesome! I just finished up the install with the new camera built into the license plate light cover, so keep an eye out for that video too!
The clips on those vents are so flimsy. They break very easily. It happens to so many people!
Yes, at least they still work while I find replacements!
I like that you can upgrade it on line
It's definitely convenient to be able to keep the software up to date!
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Hi Nick, Thank you for the wonderful work you do. I have a 2005 S500 and went to best buy to add a backup camera and carplay but they told they can't do it and sure what to do about the fiber optic wiring. Can you do it or do you recommend someone you know who can do it. I live in central PA. Thank you
Hi! Unfortunately I'm only able to work on my own vehicles. For the facelift W220 S-Class, the main things are connecting the CANbus wires, 12V and ground for the head unit and 12V and ground for the fiber optic decoder. If there's a audio system specialist shop in your area, they may be more comfortable trying the install. Otherwise if you are willing to do it yourself, you can look into using T-Taps for the power, ground, and CANbus connections behind the head unit.
@frenchineer thank you sir for your helpful response, I will go back and tell them what you said and even suggest if they can watch your videos, if not I guess I'm stuck with what I have lol
Is it the same on the 2013 sport
It should be the same (ZF 6HP) unless you have the SDV6 diesel model which has an 8 speed transmission.
@frenchineer ok thanks and great video
Thanks!
i see my mistake now, i just replaced the engine mounts, but that little mount its going on the engine, not in the transmission..... and my flex discs gotta be worn out as welll.... i been looking 5 years for this....
I've heard the rear mount a common source of vibrations when it wears out. It's not a bad time to do the flex discs while you're in there. Some people also do the carrier bearing, though that's a little more involved since it's above the exhaust.
I have seen that people also suggest taking off the haldex pump to clean the filter on the pump, when changing the fluid. But yeah that's a lot of extra work, what can make me to procrastinate on actually changing the fluid.
Interesting! It's probably easier to access than leaving it in place, but definitely more work.
I’m also installing a camera into my Mercedes
Nice!
That clicking sounds like it won't be fun to fix.😂 Also, it might be time to get some new top vents.
Yeah new top vents are on the to do list, these are pretty worn out at this point!
i’ve been tryna do as much research as possible but i’m lost, i did pretty much everything i needed or so i thought, but there’s no audio the steering controls and everything works, just no audio at all, i have the d2b speaker cable tapping into the original power cable in the car(thought it’d give the amp power) but that didn’t work. do you know how to fix it…. i also haven’t done anything in the trunk or rca extensions was trying to not have to do that, any recommendations or advice?
The first thing you will need to do is connect the D2B fiber box to the D2B wake wire on the car's harness. It should be the blue wire on one of the harnesses that connected to the original head unit. The D2B box will send the correct type of signal to the amplifier to wake it up. If it's all working properly when that's done, you'll hear the amplifier click on in the trunk when the car powers on.
@ thank you i will try it, where in the d2b do i connect the wake wire. aswell as i thought i had heard clicking, wasn’t sure what it was or where it was coming from. sorta sounded like the speakers in the rear right. i will get back to you, thank you
Thanks for your notes, reassuring to read ill have fewer issues on my xc90 with AUX - I just ordered a new unit off aliexpress.

I know it’s only been seven months share with Rob to get an answer out of this brand of the instructor working out for you? You really did a fantastic job on this video. Very impressive. Thank you so much: Steve.
Thanks! I've had no issues with these struts. They don't leak down at all which is great. Ride quality is nice, though they seem to only have one damping setting (3 levels on OEM). Ride height adjustment also works just like OEM. I plan to make a follow up video on the car to compare with the condition it was in when I first got it, and compare it to my other W220 again!
I am so getting that fir my Audi. I love it! It's better than my floppy cup mount!
Nice!
I could do that ( possibly) and save a lot on money at the dealership!
The radio is not already with CarPlay?
Yes, but this lets you use CarPlay without needing to connect your phone with a cable!
Oh ok. And do you know if have some radio for the w203 with CarPlay that don’t need a cable? I’m looking for one radio for my w203
These units tend to be updated regularly by the manufacturers, so it is possible that current versions of this head unit will have wireless carplay built in. At the time I bought and installed this one they were less common. You can check specs or email the manufacturer of the unit you're interested in to see if it has wireless carplay as well.
I will check, thank you for helping 😁
Any troubleshooting ideas for the minix not switching between iPhones, we can’t get ours to switch to another device?
If I remember correctly, it automatically connects to the last phone that was connected. If it connects to the wrong phone (if both are close by) you can switch off the WiFi and Bluetooth on that phone to disconnect it until the other phone connects. I hope this helps!
