How to Set and Optimise Sag for Your Dirt Bike
Great video Terry, very informative !
At the track you added more preload but didn't say what the final numbers were. That would have been good to know vs the shop measurements.
Why did you mute the audio when describing what you did with the high and low speed damping adjustments?
The fueling sounds too rich off the bottom. (Edit: I didn't watch the whole clip before adding that comment. You actually identified the fueling issue at the end of the clip. Sorry.)
It sounds like Western Sydney International Airport is already open out there. 🙃
Common believe is that the 20mm ports of the fork are too small for an adventure rider with a good pace. I installed a new cartridge with 25mm ports and installed a midvalve that probably needs further tuning. Looking forward to your analysis of the fork. Keep up with the great work!!
So what is the best front cartridge you would suggest for my 2024 Road Glide ? . Thanks
Am I correct in thinking this upgrade to the Xplor fork essentially makes them the same as the old open cartridge forks as fitted to my 2009 EXC 200? Does the upgraded Xplor fork work better than the old open cartridge stuff?
Mate you literally said nothing useful to actual riders. “Do this, do that, yes is it ok” the sort of thing a lecturer will tell you in the hall when you ask him a question, noice but nothing specific. If when you challenged everyone at the beginning to beat this level of knowledge and quality, then I am sure you will be unbeatable as you covered everything so broadly that anything to suspension is related but nothing actually specific. We all know we need to test the suspension, we all know we need a new tire and piston and a crew like a factory riders, but we dont have the time to do all this because we are not. If you want to be useful just say how to make something better, not be as generic as a non-rider talking about how to ride, from watching videos here. Keep your trading secrets locked and maybe setup your bike only, but noone elses in fear of losing m your knowhow.
Pure gold... Thank You!
I have the race tech book, but it was great to hear an explanation, thanks 👍. I'm riding a 2013 hd sportster as a dirt bike. Ohlins on the back 16". And WP on the front. Track and rack were very similar to my ktm 640adv. But the sportster has a shorter swing arm. Q: can you compensate for swing arm or force centre with sag in this case, if so higher or lower % sag ? (I keep up with a lot of adv riders, but it doesn't like chopping the throttle. If getting hairy neutral or slit throttle with balanced breaking works best. Then get back on it.)
Have my forks apart and agree check plate With the 2 shims would delay direction change and poor flow. Do you make any parts to change it to spring check plate?
Great work Terry
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice solution.
Thanks
Perfect 👍
Thanks 👍
Is it hard to take the bottom casting off the chrome inner tube or just screws off no problem?
What is the name brand of this shock? Can you tell me know the full name! I couldn’t find it! Thanks

Hi buddy what’s happen if you change the spring in wp forks that only have spring in one leg? The ktm 1290 Super adventure R 2021+ have preload adjustment in both legs but only one visible spring in one leg, I it is 6.5nm I’m looking to put 7.0nm, but I don’t know if that will cause problem as the other leg don’t have spring. Thanks
I got my AT new in 2016 - currently have 50k miles on her - and have had the shocks rebuilt twice (currently have Nitron cartridges but the sticktion issue is making the bike boarder line dangerous to ride) - I would love to have this done but dont know of any places here in the states that do this kind of repair.
I've just bought a 23 Africa Twin, I guess i should be looking at getting this done sooner rather than later. Nice dogs, who would complain about having dogs in a video? Someone who likes to complain and is not happy unless they're unhappy I'm tipping! Cheers
All too true. Any machinist can do this for you but if you are close than we are more than happy to sort it for you. I would highly recommend some valving changes whilst you are in there.
Is there a point to drill a hole 2024 Ktm exc fork tube AS well? There are 3 holes from Factory near top of the tube...
Absolutely......The location of the hole is more relevant than the size. The pressure (both negative and positive) is being generated just behind the seal. The closer you get to the point of actuation the more effective it is.
Cheers, bringing factory rider info to the common racer. 👌
No problem 👍
Terry! Been watching your videos in America. Thank you! I have a couple questions: 1 sag is set and you go outside to test, is that the High Speed Compression you are adjusting? If rider likes increase in dampening (clockwise) what do you do to the setting of the sag at the shop? If rider likes decrease in dampening (counter-clockwise) what do you do to the setting of the sag at the shop? Finally, once sag is set where are you going with your high speed dampening? Where are you setting it at since the adjustment has now been compensated on sag.
I am adjusting sag via an Xtrig preload adjuster using an 8mm tbar. We are chasing ideal drive characteristics. This is done as a priority before any damping changes are made. Remember....on dirt bikes it is the sag that is the primary mechanism for swingarm angle adjustment. That's the whole point

Very useful information.
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent, thank you!! Sooo, on my 2024 300 XC-W, are you saying I would not benefit from the progressive rate spring if I am just your average trail rider?
It is not so much about suspension. The progression really assists with chain torque reactions. This is where a linkage shines. Any bike that doesn't have a linkage will benefit from a progressive spring.
@@shocktreatment5495 Thank you!
Love my 16 so much going full ÖHLINS this winter...
They are a great bike....
I am still a little bit fuzzy about relation between the front and rear suspension because obviously either setting affects the other....
They sure do!
Hi Terry, when you say the latest rebound settings are a little questionable, are you able to enlighten us by what you mean by this? Cheers 🍻
Basically the level of damping generated vs the level of damping required. Sometimes you may find that the amount of damping is fine but the balance between low speed and high speed is skewed which will affect traction and control
Makes sense. Curious if you still use this method? TwinAir specifically calls out to use a dry filter that: "DO allow the filter to properly dry after washing. Oiling the filter without allowing it to dry sufficiently will trap some of the moisture." But to me oil displaces water so I'm not really sure how it could trap the moisture. This video is 6 years old so just curious if this is still your go-to method?
This is still the best method I have found. Nothing here is static and we are always prepared to evolve if a better system, product, material etc comes along. I would be inclined to think Twin Air are accounting for the dunderheads that seem to be increasing at an exponential rate....
Good Shit! Thank You!🙏
Too easy...thank you
THANK YOU!

I need to improve on my suspension setup. I just refreshed videos about setting sag and my next ride I will be more aware of what's going on. Thank you for another video where you're sharing your knowledge about dirtbikes. Best regards for Shock Treatment Team and Rottweilers from the other side of the globe!
Cheers! What bike do you have?
@@shocktreatment5495 I have Husqvarna FC 250 from 2019. Great bike for weekend warrior. I don't ride often so when I'm riding, most of the times I'm to excited to think about suspension settings.
@@JanASS1991 How heavy are you and what type of terrain are you riding on....sand / clay etc. Skill level? Do you prefer firm or plush?
@@shocktreatment5495 Without riding gear I weight about 200 pounds. For this season I went with firmer spring as I've put some weight last year. :) Can't recall exact rating right now. Most of the time I'm riding clay to intermediate MX tracks. I'm really bad at riding sand. And I prefer firmer setting over plushness as I'm taking safety over comfort. I might be wrong with my thinking but getting big kick from the rear is my nightmare.
@@JanASS1991 Sorry that I haven't replied before this. Try 100mm of sag. Forks all the way down with only the caps protruding above the clamps. 140 PSI in fork with comp at 16 out rebound 10 out. Shock HS Comp at 1 turn out LS Comp at 14 out Rebound 16 out
I've come up to speed in understand the nuances of suspension so fast since hooking into your videos. You're the man........
Thanks for your kind comment.
I’ve talked to two local tuners (Arizona) and both recommended your cheap option, and they seemed think they could get excellent results that way. I can do the Gold Valve kit myself for cheaper they they quote, I’ve found good resources on how to, guess it ultimately comes down to good RTs shim recommendations work. Really not sure what to do.
The shimstack that they supply will put you in the ballpark at a minimum. Potentially within a couple of clicks. If you find you wish to adjust the stack later on, you already have a baseline to adjust from.
So I installed the RT kit and test rode it yesterday. It really made a noticeable improvement. Can you remove the base valve on these forks without taking the top cap off the fork? For making base valve adjustments without draining oil.
@@aaronbashnick7581 You can simply turn the fork upside down and remove the base valve. You won't lose any more than a few drops. Just make sure you clean the base perfectly before removing the base bolt.
I come from Indonesia, I have a shockbreaker repair shop, this video adds to my insight into repairing shockbreakers, thank you
Glad to help
Did that in 1972 on a husky cr250 with a cotton strip and Vaseline. Yes it works.
Awesome tips Terry thanks!

Still got mine in from years ago when Terry did my revalve!
Thanks for the nice explanation. Race tech or wp cc insert pro 6500? What would you recommend?

Thank you kind Sir!
Is the foam the type that would be used for a mx bike air filter? Just trying to figure out what type of foam to buy. Thanks
Its just "Open Cell" foam similar to filter foam.
Question: When you turn down a lower tube and knock the imperfections off with 400/800 grit paper, doesn't that create micro ridges on the chrome that will grind away at the inside of the fork seals?
They are as you say "Micro Ridges" and in between those ridges sits a film of oil which, as you are no doubt aware is non compressible. This allows the seal lip to glide over the ridges rather than drop down in between them. Its benefits have been well studied and proven. The effect is very similar to cylinder honing. It in fact promotes seal life rather than hamper it....but I understand your doubt here as it doesn't sound immediately logical.
Thanks Terry. I learn a ton from your videos and appreciate you spreading your wealth of knowledge out to the masses
I've always 'lightly' packed that void between the seals with grease. Not only to keep the dirt out but to prevent the snap ring from rusting. The foam is a good idea though.
Cheers mate
Thanks again Terry for sharing your free pearls of wisdom.
You are very welcome
Doesn't that foam increase the friction on the fork?
As mentioned in the video...the foam is penetrated with lubricant...therefore reducing friction.
Pure gold! Thank you.
No worries
Finally UA-cam channel that isn't full of garbage and is straight to the point. This is how you win business and viewers.
Thanks
Great video as always 👍🏼 Whats your opinion on compression on the forks for transportation? My van is a bit low so I need to compress the forks by a ratchetstrap and sometimes leave it in the van over night before a race. Is the springs or forks gonna suffer for this? Or is it a non issue really? Ive heard alot of rumours about this over the years that the springs will get softer etc..
So, would fork gaiters be a good or bad thing?
Bad. As Terry pointed out in the video you do no want dirt and grit being dragged up and down your forks as your suspension works! Same thing as putting sand paper under your windshield wiper and turning them on.
Those rubber gaiters used on conventional fork are great, manufacturers have used them for years. The neoprene ones they sell for upside down forks are what Terry doesn't like. I have a close friend that has used the neoprene type on his 2013 YZF250 from new and he never had any issues till today. I personal don't use them.
