i read the ✨Farseer Trilogy✨ and it gave me trust issues | *spoiler-free and spoiler-y*
The Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb is heralded as one of the best current fantasy series on the market. Being advised to start with the Farseer Trilogy, I spent the past few weeks making my way through Assassin's Apprentice (AssApp), Royal Assassin (RoyalAss), and Assassin's Quest (AssQuest). Although I was told that Fitz, Nighteyes, and the Fool's story would be emotionally harrowing and entertaining... my experience was none of those things... at least in the way intended.

🚨The Crimes of The Witcher Netflix🚨

The Netflix tv show titled The Witcher, named after the Polish series by Andrzej Sapkowski of the same name, features the stories of Geralt of Rivia, Yennefer of Vengeberg, and Ciri of Cintra as they become more and more entwined by what the show frames as "destiny". Unfortunately, more often then not this tv show misunderstood what the aim of the novels were in the first place. In fact, it twi...

You write in your books?! Blasphemy!
6:29 I hate that women do this shit. It's annoying. As a grown ass adult, how are you gonna take pix of yourself crying and then post for attention.. ewww. Gives me the fuckin ick.
Good analysis tho lol
what was the last wish? Geralt needed to tie his destiny to Yenefer's. He wanted a kid... as a sterile couple. At least the djinn would not kill her that way because their destinies would be tied. I really love Witcher 1. Goofy game, but it has the humor, the voice acting is mature, lots of swearwords for dwarfs. Witcher 2 just suggs... Roache kind of saves it? What a bro. Since, the game is extremely short and the soundtrack is azz. I'm glad the third game went back to its roots. I hate the wild hunt themselves though. These guys are literal aliens and yet they are so human... Salamandra was mysterious, cunning, other-worldly, pragmatically-evil, grotesque. Wild hunt? Just big baddies.
I'm sorry, but calling The Dead Zone a dud makes me immediately suspicious of any take you have on King.
I’ll live
@@valliyarnl Obviously.
AAAYYYYYYYYYY
My journey started with “Child of God” and it obliterates notions of morality and judgement. I was shocked but found it refreshing. I thought it brought new life to the southern gothic genre. I was gobsmacked by the recent Vanity Fair article and continue to process it. It’s a surreal moment when information like that is revealed but then biographers and close friends immediately confirm it.
“Pretty Horses” was my intro to McCarthy as well, followed by”The Crossing,” “Cities,” “Meridian,” a long pause, “The Road,” and “No Country.” One could read McCarthy purely for his use of language, or, purely for the stories, but together they are masterful. Still…I had to pause after “Meridian.”
Thoughts on the untranslated Spanish?
i speak spanish (i can get by) and i thought it was brilliant. in BM it adds to the conflict i think and whether you understand it or not puts you in different headspaces: the kid doesn't understand so then you're experiencing it all like he would, if you understand them then you're experiencing it more like the Judge would. in ATPH and NCFOM i think from context clues you could get what it means, but if you're really pressed just use a translator i guess. then again, im not the best person to ask bc i know the language. for books that use french, i alway translate it for myself.
I remember reading the Road in a single day. I think I cried 4 times was also more scared reading a book than I ever had or have been since during the scene at the house and the people in the basement. Blood Meridian’s prose is just too beautiful in a Biblically apocalyptic way. Also no mention of the Judge when discussing Blood Meridian is bold lol. Wendigoon does a good review Blood Meridian if you haven’t checked it out.
Hey, I study medicine in Ireland as a first year and I swear I recognise you. Are you also a med student?
Yup!
@valliyarnl I only watched the part on Blood Meridian, but do you think the kid drawing the 4 of cups means more than just his apathy but his lack of purpose? I feel like it's his lack of purpose that ultimately brings him back in the end. Speaking of the end, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it, I just read the book for the first time and am trying to sort out my thoughts on it. P.S. Is there anyway I can send you which college without doxxing both of us?
When it comes to Westerns you should try Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry. Fantastic novel.
I fall in love too easily...😢
Came across this video a bit too late because I just recently started my McCarthy journey with no less than "Blood Meridian"... ups I guess
😂
I haven't read The Road, but I've seen the film and if the book is half as harrowing I honestly don't know if I could handle reading it. You really don't know your capacity for love until you've had a child, the world changes for you, and watching something like The Road changes. The fear, desperation, hopelessness, anger, and utter devastation that the father feels, you feel watching it. It's a great movie, I'm sure it's a great book, but man is it unsettling.
A book that has blown my mind is "the dynasty of death" by Taylor Caldwell. And you can find NO REVIEWS of it. And it is nearly 100 years old. And it was a big hit at the time. Has anyone here read it?
I think he has better books but as a father, the road made me a mess almost sustained the entire book. True love
If you haven’t already check out Elmore Leonard. Super fun stuff
You should try reading Louis Lamour he’s kind of the king of western books maybe that would be worth your while to try
Blood meridian will give anyone issues. Did reading the road give you anaphylactic shock. Ironweed
Hell yeah brother welcome to the cowboy club 🤠👉🎉 Blood Meridian was the first McCarthy i read voluntarily out of school, it was definitely a wild ride and a joy, have read it a bunch of times since then. It's a real treat.
You misspelled Book of the New Sun
I know all of his other books are great but "The Road" was the most horrifying, depressing, and pointless book I've ever read. When I finished it I was like...that's it??? No explanation of anything. No character arc. No destination. Nothing. And the movie was just as bad.
It's about a father's love for his son.
I knew within the second page of The Road, that I was in for the greatest gut punch of my life. As a father it speaks to my soul in a profound manner. Blood Meridian is the greatest novel I have ever read . My autistic traits could lead me down a very deep rabbit hole. Like all the references to eggs, bears, wolves, pilgrims, acolytes. Eggs I think have the most references. What is the connection between eggs and The Judge? And the meteor shower at the beginning and end. And. And. And! Every word is perfect. The Judge leaned across the bar and seized a bottle and snapped the cork off with his thumb. The cork whined off into the blackness above the lights like a bullet. He rifled a great drink down his throat and leaned back against the bar.
are the stars made out of cheezits
yes
Yeah, Here’s what’s interesting . I’m on the book Bonehunters and when you mentioned Quick Ben was an acolyte of ShadowThrone that’s something I totally forgot. It just blew my mind, because of things that happened in bonehunters, this makes so much more sense and I’m learning it through a book review of the first book, that’s why this series is champion.
kruppe 4lyfe krew checking in. but gosh, icarium, karsa, or bauchelain + broach, too many fun characters. guess i need a reread because i had no idea what was going on for more than half the series, it was one hell of a ride anyway. also good lord take the names of the bridgeburners out of that mouth until you get farther in! you will reverse that take eventually. *QUICK BEN*, HEDGE, KALAM, WHISKEYJACK, ANTSY, PICKER, FIDDLER, SPINDLE! it's not like this series is short on crazy characters but its the mother******* BRIDGEBURNERS sure there are always a few that are just as ridiculous or more so than many of the other major players, but plenty of them are just regular mortals surrounded by ancient superhuman powers getting by and getting it done just by being extremely scrappy and incredibly proficient and well-armed with an enormous amount of high explosives. (and yes everyone who has read the series, i know, but im trying not to spoil anything, <3 bridgeburners) Wide eyed stupid, first in, last out. (But Bauchelain, I did) ps just this and your cormac video got me subscribed, you are very insightful, its impressive
Vera joined the Glanton gang😭😭😭
Great review Wera! I just now discovered your channel. You sound a lot like me when I first read these books. McCarthy's books usually traumatize me, and I wouldn't trade that trauma for anything. Years after reading, I still get images in my head from them that just floor me.
Hilarious that it just came out he trafficked a 16 year old to Mexico.
“Trafficked”
i loved the first two books actually 1. the realsitic life of training as an assassin 2. the diverse female characters 3. the simple yet unique magic and its link with polticis 4. the wordbuilding 5. political court intrigue 6. the relation between burrich and fitz but i hate the third book and it must be rewritten spoilers hint -. it became a quest and less of a political intrigue - the complexity of the villain was lacking - the word building was kind of incomplete(origins of outislanders) - more justice to fitz character and it does not mean it should be a happy ending - i felt burrich, lady patience and chade and celerity should have been main charcters in the third book (where they would do things right in the name of both verity and the forgottne assassin fitz)
Not me watching this the day all the fucked up shit about him come out… really good video nonetheless
In a former life I studied tarot but I am no expert. Just wanted to give some thoughts on the 4 of cups. First thing is each card has multiple valid interpretations so I wouldn't be too caught up in the discontentment interpretation. The cards are meant to be contextual with other cards, placement etc. The card is of a young man contemplating 3 cups before him while seemingly ignoring a 4th cup being divinely handed to him from a cloud. It can often mean a person is so preoccupied by what is in front of them they are blinded to a divine or 4th cup-choice. Not saying your interpretation is wrong and I have never read the book just something to consider.
Thanks!
You should listen to the album, "The Last Pale Light in the West" by Ben Nichols. Its a concept album based off Blood Meridian. Its an amazing album. Well worth it. Fun fact--Samuel Chamberlain's memoir, "My Confession" was the inspiration for the characters in Blood Meridian. The Glanton Gang was real. Judge Holden was real. "the kid" was somewhat inspired by Samuel Chamberlain himself.
16:05 jokes on you, its the only mccarthy book ive read
😂
Blood Meridian is incredibly dense with gnostic symbolism specifically, that would be a fantastic place to start your research hole :)
Reading McCarthy is still on my to do list (to anyone wondering why I'm watching this video, I give absolutely no fucks about spoilers. If a story is only good when you don't know what's going to happen, it's not that good), but as someone that also shares a general dislike for westerns, I recommend checking out Theodore Sturgeon's short story, The Man Who Figured Everything. It's sad how little regard there is for short fiction, especially considering they're quicker to read and match the structure of movies more closely than novels.
I'm mostly talking to anyone else reading comments here, to be clear. The 'dude-bro lit' thing is horseshit, frankly. I mean, people lump Philip Roth in that nonsense category. Not very bright people, but still. McCarthy's just a brilliant storyteller. You can find those in pretty much any subcategory of fiction that's been bound into book form, which you probably know if you're a Joe Abercrombie fan. A lot of people dismiss the entire fantasy genre. I'm not the biggest of Western fans, but I've read some brilliant things in that category. I took a class once that was basically one big case for the fact that you can't dismiss a story because of where it's shelved in a bookstore. It was a lit. class called "Pulp Fiction." In that class, we read the kinds of stories published in literal pulp magazines published from the 1920s through the 1940s and mostly marketed to young boys. In those magazines, however, were the origins of all sorts of things that you can still find on screens big and small, which influenced many prominent writers who read them as kids and gushed about them their whole lives. "Riders of the Purple Sage" was one example, by Louis Lamour. He wrote piles of Western books, some good and some bad, but he's the name most people will know if you mention Western books. That short story was a brilliant little thing, and there's something in it for aspiring writers to learn. Everything we read in that class... Those guys could paint some pictures. The thing about brilliant writers like McCarthy is that they sometimes have broad appeal. Sometimes it will appeal even to annoying people,. and sometimes those annoying people like it for strange reasons. Sometimes they think different ideas are being expressed than what's on the page. No matter who you are, you bring yourself on the trip. Does that make it bad material? Of course not. I know you're not saying he sucks, clearly. I can't stress this enough: GOOD ON YOU FOR INVESTIGATING. I'm going off a bit about the notion in general of 'dudebro lit' because that mention will draw eyes to this video. That notion is hot garbage. Final note: By the way, if you're looking for a good Western film to watch, I recommend both "Unforgiven" and the newer version of "True Grit," for different reasons, but I don't want to say more about either. I think they're best viewed with no expectations... or at least that's how I saw them in the theater, and I was so impressed I forgot to eat my popcorn.
Have you considered doing a Vonnegut video? If you’re trying to look into authors that “dudebros” like to co-opt, he could be a good one!
Thanks for the idea!
Try Larry McMurtry. LONESOME DOVE, TEXASVILLE, THE LAST PICTURE SHOW, STREETS OF LAREDO, BUFFALO GIRLS, THE EVENING STAR, DUANE'S DEPRESSED, TERMS OF ENDEARMENT. All great, great reads.
2666 by Roberto Bolano is easily top 3 novels of the 21st century thus far, and though wildly different than Blood Meridian it has a lot of the same thematic ideas. There's an entire portion of the book called "The Part About the Killings" and it's one of the craziest, harrowing, deeply intense moments of any book I've ever read.
19:11 the card was reversed, when he pulls it he turns it around to look at it. reversed tarot cards have different meanings
Nice try, FBI
Have you read Lonesome Dove? Widely considered the greatest western novel ever written
