YES! The sacrifice for pottery seemed so off-kilter. 😆 You’ve convinced me to give People We Meet on Vacation, Book Lovers, and Funny Story a chance. Excellent video!
I read Funny Story. It’s a fun story. To be fair it’s well written compared to the popular romantasy books (acotar, 4th Wing), the characters are pretty good, side characters too, we know what will happen but the road there has some entertaining points. It’s not “all for smut” like the mentioned romantasy and not toxic. So overall it’s a good book like a sitcom to watch.
Great vid! I love seeing the different opinions on EmHen books because everyone seems to have their own favorites and unique rankings! It really just speaks to how good of a writer she is as she's seemingly written a little something for everyone. The way you felt about Beach Read, how you thought the personal struggles/family dynamics were more captivating than the romance is actually how I felt about Funny Story, but I get your points for both. I'm also happy you like People We Meet on Vacation, that book is definitely not perfect but it doesn't get enough love, I adored Poppy and watching her grow
I can trust you recommendations. I'm also not a romance reader ( I'm a fantasy reader) cause I find most of them to be insta love, smut which doesn't make sense to me. But listening to your reviews..... I can trust you and your recommendations. You've have a new follower. ❤
I love watching people read outside of their typical genres-this was such a fun video 🌟 I find Emily Henry books so fascinating because people have such strong feelings about them (and it's different for everyone)! So far I've only read Beach Read and Book Lovers and I felt pretty meh about them both. I'm excited to check out the rest (especially Funny Story 👀) to see if I can find my favorite
It was great to get your views on these books. Although the premise sounds really cheesy, you've sold me on Funny Story. I like the idea of noticing and truly knowing somebody, and the concept that love (without similar goals, lifestyle and values) isn't enough. That said, I think these things already factor into love, for me, so it adds a welcome touch of realism, and "You've got to be realistic." I've put a hold on Libby but it will come in marginally before the heat death of the universe, so I'm tempted to buy it to see what I think. You're spot on about the stories that really work are the ones that align with what the reader finds attractive, matches their experience and plays into their romantic ideals. It's weird because I usually love to get a different viewpoint or opinion when reading, but I can't relate to a romance if it's something I can't personally buy into. I'm glad you finally found a MMC, in Miles, who wasn't irrelevant or a bit meh :) I prefer stories where we get both MC's POV, but it's often more from the female POV and we don't really get to understand both sides of the attraction. The only two I've read are PWMoV and Beach Read. i thought they were both quite good but I preferred PWMoV because it felt less contrived. I took Poppy as somebody who was unhappy with life, rather than depressed, and I liked Alex a lot more than you. Both books had a certain inevitability, but I imagine, in romance, it's very much "journey before destination". They both had an immediate physical attraction and a nebulous personality-based attraction that isn't acted upon until some realisation occurs later in the book, but it might have been more interesting if these things were developed over time and they each came to a different realisation of what love is.
I quite liked Beach Read (4 star), which was my first Emily Henry read. I don't have too many other romance reads to compare it to, however, which might explain my high score :) I've got to read Funny Story soon for a book club, and your high rating gives me hope!
I just caught up with all the videos on this channel so it's good to see a new one. I think the only bad take you've had so far is your dislike for westerns 😂
As someone that reads a really wide range of genres, romance is still my least favorite :( I find they can be fun and quick reads, but after reading them I'm left feeling like, wait, that kinda sucked, haha. Since you like fantasy I would really like to see you try and tackle the Anne Rice novels! At least the first two, Interview with the Vampire and Vampire Lestat (second of which is one of my all time favorite books).
Romance novels aren’t my thing, but I still enjoyed your review on these books. In my experience romances and love interests in books I’ve read are usually hard to write. Maybe it’s because I mostly read sci fi fantasy? Mat and Tuon? Uhuh..Perrin and Faile? Uhuh…Lan and Nynaeve? Maybe… lol Brandon Sanderson not much better! But I’m in it for everything but the romance..just my opinion though..
Only read You and Me on Vacation (I still think that title makes much more sense) and I quite enjoyed it. As you said, I thought Alex could have done a bit more. Like, by the end, he was also in love with Poppy all along. So why didn't he do anything? The book would have 150 pages less if they just talked. I also think that it was a detriment to the book that he was so handsome and fit and went to the gym everyday. Makes Poppy more of an idiot for not doing anything earlier and it's also a lost opportunity for having some character growth for Alex. Like, he could start chubby and decide to take care of himself and have some arc.
I watched this but I don't read romance and don't plan to. But I appreciate your reviews. Im currently reading Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger. Have you read it? If not, I highly recommend it. Its up there with Dandelion Wine for me. Its an amazing story about family, loss, faith and coming of age in old town America. Thanks for your video! You included a ReviewBruh clip in your video. :)
@@valliyarnl I completed it last night and I can say its one of my all-time favorites. Its definitely the book of the year so far for me. Just FYI- Mike from Mikes book reviews and 3 other booktubers, called the Quilluminoty, will be reading this book in September and sharing their thoughts on it (that's how I found out about it). I cant wait to see what they think. Def think you should read it - if you dont like it you NEVER have to listen to a rec from me again. :-)
What? Didn't you know that pottery is the ultimate form of human joy and fulfillment?? It certainly solved my life... I have very odd view of love tbh. On one hand, "Love is dead. Society has killed it." - dearKristin. On the other hand, love is a very beautiful but very difficult thing. There's nothing easy about deep human interaction, but there's something about love that makes it even harder to maintain. Love in it's fullest form is devotion, respect, sacrifice, courage, a desire to spend the rest of your life with your spouse. There are so many human interactions that are difficult on their own, but love wraps them all together and makes them even harder but also increases the rewards. Love when full, pure, and shared is an experience that can't be described, partially because it's so personal. And that's one of the most beautiful parts of it: that it's different for everyone. Except for pottery!! Pottery is universal perfection! When I was making a coffee cup one day, the woman of my dreams and $90 million fell from the sky. Jk. Unfortunately... Pottery is still perfect though.
Wow Kal this is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing your perspective on love and all. Of course tho it’s all trumped by pottery and it’s magical powers… jealous of the 90 million 😭 maybe I should try pottery myself
