In this episode we cover 5 different spoons. We will cover additional spoons in a future video. We also plan to make multiple videos covering serving pieces,...

Love your channel and videos! Would you be open to doing a china identification series? I would love to know the difference, if there is one, between a cream soup bowl and a bouillon cup, and a demitasse cup vs. coffee cup. Also, how to table set and serve each. Again, these are so interesting and informative. Thank you!

First question: When we have guests, should we first put the water bottle, the butter and bread dishes, serve ourselves, then get up and bring the soup with respective dishes and after having finished with the soup, get up again to bring the platters with the meat and side dishes? This makes three sit/ ups and three servings, not to mention the coffee/pastry serving. Am I right? Second question: Is it proper to ask our relatives to help us bring the dishes and platters to the table and again to help us remove them at each serving?

    • @finechinaman3448

Great questions, For the first question: There would be a lot of getting up and sitting down but quite often much of the dinnerware would already be on the table. I have seen the host carry around the serving bowl or platter and dish out in front of the guest. I have also seen where say salad plates are collected and then are brought back out with salad on them. You can also do like you say and just bring the pieces out as they have food on them. I prefer that the empty pieces be on the table if possible (except for a dessert plate) at the beginning of the meal because it is the best time to admire the fine dinnerware and also give the guest a hint as to how many courses are in store. If you look at the historic dinner video I made (link below) you will see that most of the dinnerware is on the table empty from the beginning. The two items in each pacesetting that were not included at the beginning were the cream soups (because we had two soups and the rim soup took up the space and was being severed first and the bowl that the dessert was in. ua-cam.com/video/FQe4nwppCR8/v-deo.html For the second question: I would never ask guest to do that myself but quite often some will ask if they can help and if you would like them to you can accept their offer. In the old days some middle class and most higher class families would quite likely have someone hired to serve the dinner.

@@finechinaman3448 When I say a relative, I mean your sister, daughter, or close friend, who is also guest. Thank you for your answer. Again I haven't understood well: All dishes on the table, OK. Soup gets served first, with the host carrying the soup bowl round the table and serving. Then host sits. After finishing the soup, she gets up again to just bring the meat platters and vegetable toureens and asks the guests to pass them around, or lets them get served on their own, in case she has two or more platters on the table for 6 guests. Is that right? BTW. I admired the gorgeous set you showed. Great choice. I assume you will be doing a vid with your silver cutlery, which I'll be waiting to see! Do you happen to know what the use of a roll top silverware on four feet and a glass container is? I bought one, being advertised as butter dish, but I doubt that it was used as such. I'll send you its photo. Again do you happen to know if silver plated tableware of the '40s to '60s or even earlier contained zinc, pweter and other heavy metals?

What if you serve individual, covered soup tureens to your guests? I assume the tureens should be placed in front of the guest, cover on, on top of the salad plate. Should you also place a side plate to the left of the silverware for them to place the lid, or should they place the lid on the bread plate?

Yes, most pieces like this do not have a ton of value but have seen many for sale in the condition you describe. Although I prefer the English ones many do like the ones made in Japan. Some people like displaying plates when they look old and crazed. Chipped pieces would not be worth as much unless they are rare. It doesn't surprise me that just about all of my most popular videos are covering Blue Willow.

I just came across a Royal Albert coffee pot, sugar bowl, and cream jar. Also eight cups & saucers. I think they're 14-16 ounce cups. It looks beautiful with no damage that an amateur like me can spot. I'm just an old wild punk rocker, but I know high class shizit when I see it, so I grabbed these things from being thrown out! I'm gonna keep two cups for me and my imaginary friend to drink coffee with, and sell the rest as a set to a pawn shop. I couldn't imagine packing it all to sell, so the pawn star is gonna have to come get this set. Is $150 too low? I better look around online for a place to sell.

I liked to see a video showing in detail how the antique sterling cutlery of Kings or Queens pattern had been produced and how the same can be produced today. There are some household articles as the China porcelain from Meissen or Nymphenburg, Germany which are still produced by hand as 300 years ago. Is this also today with silver cutlery as once produced 200 years ago in London ?

  • @gauriblomeyer1835

I came to know that there are different kinds of silver cutlery as 950/1000 and a new mixture with a rare metal which prevents the silver to become dark. From the pattern I love Kings and Queens pattern made by George Adams in about 1820 to 1860. You get it still in best quality at the Silver Vaults Nr. 18, a must see location when you love silver cutlery and other silver articles. It is costly but it is the far best in the world.

The jelly server was actually more utilized for gelatinized dishes. It was quite popular and en vogue to serve jellied bouillons and broths as well as aspics or molded fruit gelatin salads. The Victorians extracted gelatin from boiling pig and/or cow hooves for several hours. So yes…it can serve jam, jelly or preserve spreads in our modern fashion of dining but that was not its primary or first utilization.

Not much. In my experience some plates have a warped shape but it isn't the glaze, it is the actual plate. Also some plates have more depth than others and so they do not stack well. If I am buying open stock I inspect each plate. If you have to buy via amazon you won't have a choice.

Were those *not* made in England and use of the word England in that case only refers to Spode being an English company? Or were those also made in England, even though they don’t say “Made in?” Tricky business! I’m trying to quickly make a purchase decision and can’t find the answer anywhere!
