"Passerby" by Marcel Dominic (Fingerstyle Acoustic Guitar)
A dreamy song about a daydreamer...more on that later. First though, I thought about a street musician who is completely engrossed in the performance of a musical piece and simultaneously watching people pass by. You might have heard of the term 'sonder' (The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, by John Koenig). A realization probably all of us have had at some point. I am by far the first person the reference it.
All these people passing by. They are going somewhere, have to be somewhere, hastily get to the train station or calmly walk to get lunch. Whatever they are doing though, none of them notices the musician, who currently plays the soundtrack of their life.
The musician? Well, he is feeling most satisfied in this exact spot. Deeply engaged. Feeling most fortunate being allowed to witness everything from the wayside and simply take it all in.

Imagine a life with someone. How adventurous.
Our eyes met and my heart stopped for a brief but full lifetime.
I had a typical almost-mid-thirty day in a 21st century western life. Grappling with said life.
Brooding over decisions made, and outcomes yet to come to terms and live with.
Up until our chance meeting that is. Why is it always on these dark days? Though, of course it is…
I was not prepared for happening upon you right here. To be engulfed in beauty in a place of such…existential simplicity. Not prepared to fall in love at the grocery store. But there I was. How beautifully naive.
And when our eyes met there for a second you knew not my story and I knew not yours. And your look was without judgement or premonition. It was only intuition and pure, rejuvenating excitement.
Our eyes met for a mere second but my heart stopped for a lifetime. A brief lifetime, because I imagined us in this moment. Imagine us!
I am in love with the idea of you. Cannot truly know if I dare not to take the step, can I?
I froze at the sight of your smile that sent warmth through my body and mended my soul. How did you...
The cold touch of reality brought me back from the dream when they told me the amount due for my purchase. I paid at checkout and packed my things.
How much more can I give, though? I have felt and fought. I have been broken and mended.
Like the double edged sword of perception - for everything gained something is lost.
If forever we only realize too late.
The emotional reserves are finite and strength is limited in this, my shell and mind. So I was wondering. How much more do I have left. For you?
I fear it is not enough and this thought is winning. I wish I were the one to speak first, but I can’t.
Can you see it?
I need you to say something.
Will you?

Oh, well. It’s fine. Shouldn’t be, I guess. I mean, yeah, it’s fine. What was I thi…right?
Imagine a life with someone. How refreshingly adventurous. How incredibly exciting.
I mean, I want you to be fulfilled and happy in this life, my dear passerby. I went through the automatic doors and that was goodbye.

"What We Share" (Original Version) by Marcel Dominic (Percussive Fingerstyle Acoustic Guitar)

As an emotionally charged snapshot of life "What We Share" delineates bitter lonliness while trying to conciliate that lonliness with new gained - and rightful - hope for brighter days of connection. Communicating and sharing what is locked off or locked up in the head or heart can make the difference to how the world around sees us and we it. Opening up in the right way, and to the right peopl...

Ephemerality is what gives moments their meaning. It is what makes experiences special. Even though some days it saddens me I know it is the nature of..hm..everything, probably. A modern camera is capable of doing a lot of work for us to mend the fading memory, but it can only provide a faint remnant of what once was. That moment, indeed, had its time to shine and now takes its rightful place i...

Waiting. I have already spoken a lot about this song and the impact it had on me. What else is there to say at this point? Well, I tried to do it justice. To me it is a call to action and a call to patience. It is security, a sense of belonging and the pain of loneliness. And the hope that one day this loneliness shall be no more. "Deer in the Dawn" by Marcel Dominic (Fingerstyle Acoustic Guitar)

The inspiration for the title of this song is multifaceted. The elegantly illustrated book called “A first book of nature” by Nicola Davies, which I have read to my boys countless times, has two pages dedicated to this magical meeting. A child happens upon a deer on a misty morning, and the beauty and ephemerality of this encounter make this dream-like moment, a special one. One, which captures...
"Sapling" by Marcel Dominic (Fingerstyle Acoustic Guitar)

A sapling is a little seed which has just begun to grow. Colloquially used it can also mean “young man”. It is Father’s Day in Germany today and I feel so very old and so very young at the same time. I was playing this melody in front of my boys for the last 2 to 3 months. At first, I thought I wouldn’t even make it a song, but then I considered the circumstances I was playing it in, the beginn...

Dedicated to @CalumGrahamMusic I took a good look at my life back in 2019 when I knew my first son is on his way and many things changing inside my head. In Conscious Slumber is about the focused passivity / inward, determined mindwork preceding action. It is a meditative state of preparation. Touched by your description of this song’s story/meaning/inspiration. That this music is a real soundtrack to a particular (and relatable) journey of yours. I love the hope, gratitude, and acceptance expressed in spite of the presence of pain. I’ll go ahead and say, I think in every section of the song, the music beautifully conveys its intended meaning. Aside from the music’s effectiveness at storytelling, it’s beautiful to listen to. Thank you as always for sharing this piece of yourself and your story Marcel

@@marceldominic Hey Marcel, sorry for the delayed answer I had a lot of work to complete this week. Well, I am not a big fan of the transition part you added around 3.00-3.30. But your percussion play after was really nice, so overrall I would go for the second (original) version.

@@Fingerstyle-Magazine No worries at all. Ah, yeah I absolutely get that. Thank you for your feedback. It is a somewhat weird part and comes in pretty abruptly. I decided to go with my gut feeling and write it this way after all. It fits my personal narrative for the song. However, that is also part of the reason I wrote the alternative Contemplative Version, because some days I just want to listen to “pure” fingerstyle without any fancy stuff and figured some people might feel the same.

@@marceldominic Yes it's a good thing to do to write for yourself and what you would like to hear. Always more enjoyable than let's say trying to fit techniques just for the potential audience ^^. Oh, out of topic but I m writting an article theses days on the relation between fingerstyle artists and musical theory so I m trying to collect data. Would you mind telling me your relation to the musical theory and your musical background ? No pressure, if you don't want to or do not have time it's perfectly fine

    • @marceldominic
      @marceldominic Місяць тому

@@Fingerstyle-MagazineSorry for the late response. If it’s still of any value to you I’ll just quickly say that I had a year of classical lessons at the age of 11, learning Christmas songs and what not. It was there and later through music as a school subject for two years that I learned some basics of theory. After that I had one year of lessons in electrical guitar focusing more on practice and techniques, but it was here when I first learned of modes. It was only a couple years later (2020) that I started writing my own fingerstyle guitar music using songwriting and playing techniques that I applied from songs and tutorials from Calum Graham, R.D King, Andy McKee, Maneli Jamal, Trevor Gordon Hall and more. These days I don’t think of theory whatsoever, but I have a strong feeling that more knowledge could be beneficial for me in situations where I’m looking for how to make a song wholesome and more interesting.

This song deserves more views and it pops up in my brain pretty often. Despite being a somewhat recent song of yours it invokes a sense of nostalgia for me and takes me back to my childhood and teenage years where life was stress free and amazing. No one told me about how hard the monotony of being an adult would hit me later, but this song puts me at ease and helps me be a bit more optimistic. Really beautiful playing. Definitely inspired to play my guitar more now. Also that Lowden is so sexy and one day hope to get one.

Thank you for leaving your words on the song. That is so great it is inspired you to pick up the guitar more. Love it when that happens to me and a piece resonates so much I just want to play all day. I’m trying to find a quote on life that went something like this: life is only bearable if we don’t take it seriously. Though I don’t think it truly fits in your circumstance, nonetheless I was thinking about it when reading your comment. Maybe our parents and the like left this information out on purpose or they forgot about these times, or have never experienced anything like it. Personally, I struggle with taking everything too seriously and it is…debilitating. I like to think of life in phases / chapters. It is always easy to say to someone, because they don’t know the whole story, but try to enjoy the chapter you find yourself in now. Dark times can be an unexpected catalyst for great things. 🎵🌳🕯️ And yes, with each passing day this Lowden and me grow closer and closer. What a masterful instrument. Ever since I first saw it, it was like that Harry Potter wand-scene for me 😄

Dude I love this song so much. This and mountain trail have quickly become some of my favourites. The melody is so beautiful, it’s another one I’d love to learn eventually :) Cheers man

That’s awesome to hear, man! Yeah, I really enjoy the melody of Liminal Spaces as well. It’s interesting because I would locate these two songs somewhere in the same mental space if that makes sense.

@@marceldominic 100 percent man, I think that’s why I gravitate so much towards the two songs, they both have “that vibe” and I feel it deeply. Have you put anymore thought into a Mountain Trail tutorial? I know you’re busy guy but man .. I’m absolutely dying to learn it. I have a little break in February from work, and would love to get it down over that time. It literally goes on repeat at least 10x a day aha … and I can only imagine being able to play it 😌

@@sc7244Absolutely! Pretty different tunings but both are about that up and down in life and carry a certain atmosphere and that shows musically, I feel. Sure did! Dude, you’re a heavy inspiration for me to making this tutorial a reality. You’re not going to believe me, but when I finished writing it last year I wanted this song to get the first tutorial 😄 Am preparing the tutorial at the moment. It is going to happen and February is realistic, but that’s all I can say. ✊🏽

So much room to breathe! Love your cover, Marcel! And your interpretation of what Calum said non-verbally: "A call to action and a call to patience. It is security, a sense of belonging and the pain of loneliness. And the hope that one day this loneliness shall be no more." Thank you!
