The 3" Python is one of the nicest feeling guns I've ever held.

If the 686 had wood grips then 100% I'd choose it, the python is beautiful but i don't like the colt style cylinder release as much, its got a heavier DA trigger, and one less round. Even carrying around a $900 revolver I'd be worried about it getting scratched up but if I had the python it would just spend most of its life in a display case.

Per S&W website the model 686 is a 357 Magnum while capable of firing 38 Special unless yours got a custome cylinder installation it’s a 357 Magnum. They do have a customs shop so you could get them to put an38 Special cylinder on it but as it comes stock the 686 is not a 38 Special only gun it’s a 357 Magnum gun. The plus just denotes a seventh chamber. Also better triggers than Colts so why try to downgrade the 686 at all just own that Colt is 2nd or maybe third place in revolver manufacturing. Ruger May take second place from them.
