STOP Dropsy! How to Keep Fish Alive
Stop loosing fish to Dropsy! Learn everything you need to know about what causes dropsy in fish, how to prevent it and how to treat it
Dropsy, also known as "pinecone disease," is a condition caused by a buildup of fluid inside a fish's body cavity, leading to swelling and protrusion of its scales, resembling a pinecone. This condition often indicates underlying health issues such as bacterial infections, organ failure, or poor water quality.
Prevention is key to maintaining the health of your aquarium. We'll discuss essential steps to prevent Dropsy, including maintaining optimal water parameters, providing a balanced diet, and quarantine procedures for new fish to prevent the spread of diseases.

Stop Making These Mistakes! Safely Add Bettas
I keep mine in a non heated shrimp tank. Still growing and thriving at about 65 degrees F
Great to know :D
I'd agree they are underrated, but imo THE most underrated fish is the white cloud mountain minnow
Personally I found the Vietnamese White clouds to be better than the regulars.
@@Lefty3213a you're right, and there has been so much cross-breeding. They can range from boring silverish color to bright purples and yellows
When I was a toddler, my aunt lived with a roommate who had a fish tank in their condo. One of the fish was a plecostomus whom they had named "Hootie", after the band Hootie and the Blowfish.
Haha that's awesome!
Thanks for the info. Big help. These fish are so smart I think. I have a dojo and a pleco. 2 angel fish, harlequin rasboras, cory catfish, black shirt tetras, in a 75 gal. I am at my limit I am sure, unfortunately I mixed the 2 angels with the dojo and now the temp needs to be at 75. Now after watching I will put that down to 74. I feel like the dojo needs a friend to school with. Do you think I can add one more dojo?
I also have 3 clown loaches in the tank.
Well that limit will depend on how many of the smaller fish ya got. And don't worry TOO much abt temp. Fish are adaptable.
Thanks
You're welcome
I got my congos in a 60 gallon and for some reason 2 weeks in after I got them they started to die one by one every 2 days
So to diagnose this we'd need to go through a whole list of things. 1st would be age of the tank as in how long has it been up and running. Then we'd move onto water parameters providing the tank has already cycled. Is there ammonia present, or nitrites? Did your nitrates spike? Has pH drastically changed? Then was anything new added to the tank, decor, plants, fish. Then where the fish came from, how'd they look when they came in did any seem off. How have they died?
I just started with the Black Phantom, I love mine, beautiful and easy going
They are an AWESOME fish. Best of luck with em :D
I have one that's 6 inches in a 10 gallon tank, I feel bad for it but petsmart wouldn't take him back
See if you have an local fish keeper groups and if anyone will take him. Ask local pet stores that aren't petsmart.
All good choices! 😊
Ya they did a great job with the selection
Thank you this was very helpful. I wanna get my betta back to life and I feel like it’s tumors are concerning so I’m glad that I’m able to help it
You're very welcome. I am glad I could assist you
Do you think it would be appropriate to keep them with another kind of loach, like java loaches? Or would they spaghetti slurp em
I'd imagine keeping them with anything smaller than their mouth is a risk.
i have a 3 year old dojo i call mr. bigglesworth and that boy is a whopping 14” long and about 1” thick! dudes got a massive appetite. i got him in october 2021 and he wasnt any bigger than my finger. he is now in a 55 gallon with my 12” pleco, some dalmatian mollies, and rainbow shark. my fish guy said he's never seen one that big before
Damn! Mr. Biggledworth sounds like a BEAST!
I bought 2 today for my 40 breeder
Nice! Enjoy them
Hey can I use it with a separate timer or only with this controller?
I have not tried this particular light on a seperate timer. I will test it for you and get back to ya
I'm a lemon fan. Look awesome in a shoal. More docile than other tetras and mine were tolerant of hard water that exceeded 8.
Dang that's higher than I'd think :O where they tank raised?

lol some parts of Canada, up here we get all the sunfish ( except the dwarf ) every were
I always thought dropsy was a kidney disease and difficult to near impossible to recover from or reverse, however if it is food related it’s pretty sad that poor quality foods are on sale.
You are correct that yes it can be an issue with an internal organ. But I think in todays day and age a lot of the cases people see is just do to bad food that gets pushed out thanks to really good marketing. I know since I switched my foods to a better quality food ive not had a single case in my fish
This is the thing that people don’t realise you have to dose based on the amount of water that’s in the tank. Now you have to be able to take into consideration that when you add substrate and hard scape your water capacity isn’t what it would of been had the tank been bare
All valid points.
My Betta was lost due to improper food. The food was supposed to be designed specifically for Bettas, but the granules were pretty hard, elongated and as it turned out too big. The betta chew the sticks with a crisping sound, which I thought was ok, after all, this was Betta-specific food. But I figured out it caused a wound inside his mouth, and that's how infection got him
That is very unfortunate, but it is sadly reality. Once bettas became extremely popular a bunch of companies jumped on the band wagon and started making and marketing betta foods that were not good for them. I only feed my betta fish, bug bites, Northfin betta food Xtreme Nano and then Hikari Freeze dried or frozen Blood/Tubfix worms now. I am planning to do a new food guide for 2024 to hopefully educate people on this topic as well. I am sorry that you lost your fish to greedy company marketing and lies.
Brilliant video...I would also say some garlic I the water has definatly help me save a fish or two.
Good tip to know! Thank you for sharing and thank you for watching. I'm glad you found it to be useful information. I just wanted to help spread awareness because I know the first time I had a fish get dropsy I was at a total loss for what was going on and I don't want others to also go through that.
@@Lefty3213a this video was great I have a number of tanks and have experienced all you said...I'm based I'm cape town south africa and ofcoarse different climates also play a role...I found that the pine coneing...and loss of energy I notice first and then sometimes Popeye I immediately remove and start with some salt and garlic and change diet to only live food to also trigger their appetite.. I've only done the more naturals ways...the medication advice and the things you said about spotting the various types top notch thank you.
Wow! That's awesome to see my video is reaching someone on the other side of the globe! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and wish you the best of luck with your fish keeping journey
@@Lefty3213a thank you so much for that keep doing what your doing the way you put your videos together and the information you gets any fish keeper thinking about different ways to add to the health care of their aqauriums never stop no matter the changes your doing amazing and I will let people know who are interested in the hobby of you as some to help give brilliant information.
@reonmartin2636 thank you so much for the kind words! I appreciate it
Love all platies. I have 5 bumble bees in with my harlequins and a red honey gourami. They all get on great. The bumble bees sometimes group like a little army and set off round the 20 gallon tank. They explore all the rocks and plants and they like glass surfing with everyone else.Like all platy fish they are good eaters. All 5 are female hence no babies. If you look really carefully, they are not 100per cent identical. I can tell them.apart and they all have a name.Brilliant little fish.
Awesome information! Thank you for sharing your story on these beautiful fish :D
Thank you Lefty ,great advice . Lovely to see you take care 🤗💙
Thanks so much for watching Debz :) I miss seeing everyone too! Hoping to get back into the swing of things

Lovely fish, you would know it was one of the Danio family, similar in shape as the Zebra ,Leopard, Pearl Danios.
Very cool fish indeed
just got a new clown pleco, I’m super excited❤
Awesome! Best of luck to you :D
Ohhh that is cool I might get one for my betta ❤
Ya I always thought they were useless till mine started to hang in it
i ve got 10 of them a few days ago but they are super shy i barely see them they are always hiding behind the driftwood and in the plants and they dont even want to eat much
Give em a few days. Keep the lights off. Eventually they will get comfortable
Be aware people it only tests FREE ammonia not total ammonia. API and other test kits test for nh3 and nh4, this product only tests the harmful ammonia type.
For me it's still better than nothing 😌
I love this product, thing is many people are unaware of what I said regarding nh3 and nh4 ammonia, and it receives alot of critics saying it doesn't work, when it does.@@Lefty3213a
I love mine and I'd like to add one more. I got the 3 inch and the water has stayed very clear longer. I just put in bowl of water to clean it & the water blows out. Had a bubble wand with light changing. Hated it.. hardly any bubbles. This is thebest investment I've made for my fish. We havea 10 year old angel fish. This is quiet & I love the small bubbles..
Awesome happy to hear! I've got the prototype one and love it. Nice low profile high flow air stone
I have one of these I was at Hollybush aquarium uk and a guy came up with it in an ice cream tub and asked them if they wanted it, they said no so he said he was going to flush it down the loo so I took a look and said I would take it. Well I've had it around a year now and its around 10 inches long and doing well luckily I have a 450 litre 5 foot planted tank so it has plenty of room to move around in. How someone can even contemplate flushing a live fish down the loo beggars belief.
Damn! Good thing you were there to save the fish! Ya the flushing and improper disposal is why our souther state if Florida has these things clogging up their water ways. Becuase people can't be bothers to take 5 minutes to research a fish before they get one and can't properly take care of it
My clown is so skiddish. I've got a 20 gal with spiderwood, live plants and rocks and he always is hiding. If we spot him he will immediately move to where we can't see him. He's now 5 years old and I see him maybe 1-2 times a week if I'm lucky. It's fine though I'm like that myself lol.
haha ya every pleco but like commons seems to be super skidish! its kinda crazy. My zodiac loaches act the same way too but they get the zoomies and ZIP all over the tank
how big is it now i want to get a place but i dont want a big one or one that destroys plants
Mines a little over 3 inches now
I just bought one but he’s so small I hope he doesn’t get eaten. I didn’t realize my other fish would be that much bigger than it. 😬
If anyone tries to eat him he will get suck. I'd honestly be more worried about him not getting enough food.
i have a heavily planted 20 gallon long tank, current plan is 12 harlequin rasboras 3 honey gourami 8 albiono cory and 7 of these black phantom tetras I know its a little bit overstocked but I do have appropriate filtration to deal with it. Any aggression relating to the phantom tetras? Currently the harlequins and HG's are in the tank and no problems so far
There shouldn't be any from the phantoms. I would say just keep an eye on those gourami I have heard they can be a little territorial. But in my experience it w as fine and I had em mixed with a betta. But the tank being heavily planted should help that
My tap is 7.4 ph with 80 ppm kh and I use ordinary coated aquarium gravel as substrate. After a week in my tank my ph is stable but my kh drops to 40. So it’s either dose buffer or water changes. I will pick dosing……lol
Ya I really like this stuff. Hope it works out for you
What’s the name of the fish food you recommend?
At present I would recommend any of the bug bites, North Fin foods or hikaris freeze dried / frozen foods.
I just got a clown pleco about a month ago. I have him in a 20 gallon with 3 leopard danios and 3 zebra danios. I'm kinda worried because the clown pleco shows no interest what so ever in anything I put in the tank. He is totally munching on wood and algea but seems to turn his nose up at anything I put in there. I have tried pleco wafers, various vegetables, even cantaloupe. He refuses to eat anything but algea and wood. Should I be concerned?
Mine typically didn't eat much either as far as veggies went. I would say asking ad he's munching on stuff you should be ok. You could try rapashy or maybe a North Fin algea waffer or hikari bottom feeder
Thanks I will have to look into those
@Mr-8 sorry miss spoke it's hikari carnivore pellets. My plecos love em. Uh if you're on the US I can send you some samples so you don't need to buy it. If you wanna shoot me an email
I bought some brine shrimp and another type of food to try. I'm holding off cause I'm treating my tank with general cure right now. He had some white stringy poop going on so that might also be a factor.
@Mr-8 ah ok! Yes keep an eye on everyone if yoh have the white stringy poops going on
Has anyone managed to breed them in captivity?
As far as I know yes they can be bred in captivity like other plecos providing you can sex them properly and have the patience to breed them.
Hi, I live in Hungary and really want to buy some betta fish. But Thailand and the USA are all away from my country. And I was reading some comments saying that the transhipper costs a lot. Should I buy fish from them or no?
I only had the one bad issue with a transhipper. I bought like 50 bettas from Thailand and had none show up dead. I would say talk with the seller and their transshipper first find out their polices especially with dead fish and refunds. Take pictures of everything. and the buyer protections on ebay and PayPal should keep you safe
Thank you~ ♥ Dojo loach are so cute and have BIG personalities ♥♥

My favourites here in Singapore!
Awesome :D
I use them for my drosera carnivorous plants
thats an ingenious use :O I know people used them for assassin snails but I guess if they are made from flies it makes sense that carnivorous plants would like em too! What to feed carnivorous plants was actually one of the things stopping me from getting some. But now I might just have to get some :D
Thank you for the video! May I please ask what is the advised male-female ratio? :)
It's always best to have more females to males I would say 2:1 or 3:1 would be even better.
@@Lefty3213a thank you so much! 😊
@margaritavalcheva you're welcome
Great info.. I personally do not like Hygger products.. they are super reasonable in price but it comes with a defective water temperature meter. The hygger heater I have marks almost 10 degrees Fahrenheit of a difference..
Woah! That's alot omg! I've not had that happen with mine. It's with I'm a degree or two of what I set it as. Did you reach out to them? They are usually good with customer service.
just started growing some from seeds and wanted to know ... Does trimming it make it spread and fill in quicker?
Trimming will always help plants grow. I am not necessarily sure if it will help this carpet faster, though unfortunately. Sorry.
