Collagraphy is a really versatile printing process in which a textured plate is inked up and put through a press. Different textures hold varying amounts. of ink and print different tones. Anything with a low relief texture can be stuck down and used: wallpaper, leaves, fabrics, tapes and threads etc

I was quite surprised by the look of "no varnish". This is something I will be using in the near future. Thanks.

I used to always varnish my plates and once I discovered that no varnish was so much better I never use varnish at all

Thank you, that was really helpful.
I used wood glue but now I will try it with Shellack and without coating (that was astonishing).
I like your channel and your artworks.

Great video. Thank you so much for this. I have used masking tape to create some texture on a collagraph plate and am worried that the rubbing would remove it. That would be my main reason to use a varnish. Really love the depth however with no varnish at all.

I love your collagraphs. Is it possible to make a very detailed video of step by step making a collagraph close up so we can follow to get the hang. I don’t have a home press but something to use for embossing and cutting out. I am fascinated by the process and frustrated I can’t get a good plate made. I bought a few books but sent them back because it is all for profs😢

Suzie Mackenzie's book is very good - you do really have to get to grips with the basics in collagraph, I've found. And I would recommend a craft press for a cheap printing option. You can't really do intaglio without some sort of press 😊

That’s a really good idea, I will look into doing a step by step video 🤗

This video DID help me get the notion to have my students along with myself . . . NOT get attached to the collagraph plates. If anything, be willing to make multiple plates with the same design or similar designs. Basically, art is temporary and permanent at the same time. It's passing and static. etc etc etc. Thanks for this video, it's exactly what I needed to see.

Brilliant, thanks for sharing this! I'm just starting with collagraphs and getting the best results from tetrapaks as they already have that finish. Varnishing, not so much! I'll give the wood glue a go. Love the crackle detail showing up in the shellac version - but overall I agree that no varnish is best. I won't be editioning anything for the foreseeable future 😊

Tetrapak is really great fun and I’ve used it in the past. For best results it’s good to flatten it under your press first. Thank you and glad you found the video useful 🤗

Hi Marta, I love your videos. You are so creative and you give great practical info. Because of this, I always learn something. I do have one request - Your videos are quite quiet compared to much of what I watch on UA-cam. I have hearing impairment, but I'm able to hear most videos at about half volume. For your videos, even with the volume at maximum level, I cannot hear you very well so I always have to turn on the captions. Unfortunately, when I'm reading the captions, I don't always see what you're doing. I'm hoping that if you read this, you can find a way to increase the volume on your videos. Thanks for all you do!
