Quick test flight footage with a new camera, the Insta360 X4 on a Carbon Cub FX3 in the Anchorage area. Set the quality to 2160p if you wish. The camera came with some kind of thin plastic shell that snapped on but was showing up in the frames, will not be using that shell again. #tacaero
CubCrafters Carbon Cub FX3 STOL contest in Alaska
Переглядів 634Рік тому
I've never done any of these sorts of competitions, but this is a video of my first attempt at a STOL contest in my FX3. Specifically, I participated in the short-takeoff and spot-landing contest at the Sourdough Fly-in at Port Alsworth Alaska in May 2023. My best short takeoff was 85 feet and my closest touchdown to the landing line without scratching was 20 feet 10". Definitely a lot of room ...

Flying with my friend Boaz in 2 CubCrafters Carbon Cub FX3's, we departed Anchorage toward Tok to begin his journey onwards back to the lower 48 states. There we parted ways after 10 days of exploring with our Orange Carbon Cubs in Alaska. We visited Valdez for several days during the airshow, some sandbars on the Susistna river, Homer, Seldovia, Nanwalek, Lake Clark Pass, Port Alsworth, Iliamn...

Glacier Landings in the Carbon Cub FX3: Tailwheel View

I wanted to try some ski flying without my tail ski so I took it off and put my flightflix xploring alaska tailwheel camera mount on to see what would happen. I'm also experimenting a bit with the settings of the Acme tailwheel shock stinger. Met up with a friend, @Supercub_Adventures from instagram, in his PA-18 on the glacier. Then I picked up another friend nearby who rode in the Tac-Aero ta...

Time lapse video of a relaxing drive from Anchorage, Alaska to Chena Hot Springs and back + Aurora

I wanted to fly in my cub for this trip but the first half of the video should make it obvious why we couldn't. So we turned it into a relaxing drive, filmed in late March (technically early spring but still winter in effect). This is a time lapse of our drive from Anchorage to Fairbanks then Chena Hot Springs on the Parks highway, with a stop in Denali and Healy to see the Aurora. The vehicle ...

Filmed from downtown Anchorage facing west in late February 2023.
Why dont you fly it lean of peak. Is it injected?
How did you pick an alternate? Am I correct by saying that the FX3 does not have ground-based navigation?
The FX3 can have vhf ground based nav if you build to equip it. The gnc-355 has waas augmented GPS so both the destination and alternate can be based on gps approaches, you just have to use LNAV only or circling mins to determine the suitability of the alternate, even though you can fly to LPV mins if you actually go to the alternate. There are many airports that satisfied alternate requirements this day, and I believe I chose Cordova where the TAF called for VFR.
@@EricMassey748 you define airmanship with everything that you do with that FX3 and that Cub is truly a Swiss Army knife for all you can do with it.
@@stephendeklerk2479 Thank you, you're too kind!
Nicely done.
Man I want one of those. You should get you some rain-x plastic and apply it.
Beautiful!
Been going fishing up there and staying at the lodge at the airport for many years. Good thing you didn't have to dodge any bears on the runway! Fun video. thanks for sharing!
Absolutely beautiful plane. Just learned short field takeoffs and landings today and they’re a blast. Would love to learn on a tailwheel.
Thanks for the kind words, you should defnitely make it happen!
🧈 Smooth!
Nice footage !
I was there the day the plane crashed at the end of the runway. One of our motor pools was right there too.
That was a greaser. If I never go back there thats fine by me. Congrats on Skweetna win 👍
Too kind! I think we had a mortar attack siren while unloading that day too. A little more interesting than the SDF turns these days.
Very nice plane you got there bro, the panel displays look more advanced than whats in an A320neo! Enjoy it, its like a flying Land Rover!
89" is amazingly Good, Congrats 👍
Beautiful plane. “Windshear” on approach? Go around.
Thanks for the feedback!
do a x country trip vid with just the a/c engine sound n no commentary at some stage, there's a good chap ;-)
That looks like SO much fun!. The narration was well done and informative. Laying tracks is smart. I've seen some videos of people setting down on top of snowy mountains without testing/packing the snow first, and becoming stuck.
Maybe some day I will be lucky enough to bring my FX3 to Alaska. Enjoy!
love the video! just curious, I'm in instrument right now and didn't know if i was missing something for cirlcing approaches, we were always taught to circle 1.3 miles from the runway and try our best to maintain that 1.3miles distance around the runway as we circle (at least in a category a plane), did you circle at the MAP or when did u start ur circle?
When I saw that the airport was VMC I decided to fly overhead the airport and join the traffic pattern to make left traffic for runway 16, and cancelled IFR on downwind. If it was IMC at the airport I would've needed to start the circle either at the MAP or at about 1.3 miles from the runway if I saw it that soon; I also would've had to circle west of the airport and not fly left traffic as is the normal pattern for runway 16.
@@EricMassey748 ah gotcha! i don’t know why I didn’t even think of that when i watched haha must’ve been locked in on only flying instrument, kinda forgot u could just cancel and proceed vfr. Thanks for hittin me back love the vids!
These Carbon Cubs don’t usually have pitot heat. Is that a problem for you when you fly IFR?
Mine has pitot heat. It's nice to have but usually airframe icicing is the bigger problem, it will ice up in the clouds if the temperature is less than freezing inside of them.
Love the plane … And love the vid! Thanks for sharing! That just might be my future airplane!!! Blue Skies and Tail Winds to ya Brotha! 😎🇺🇸
Late model PA-18s have all metal flaps and ailerons.
Very good, I didn't know that, thanks for the feedback. Never been fortunate enough to fly any built in that timeframe.
Is that a “fixed pitch prop or constant speed prop ?
Constant speed
Very Enjoyable I was stationed at JBER and I miss Alaska and those mountains. I like to watch what planes I am flying in flight sim just to compare the model and other then avonics its 90% the same.
I enjoyed this flight! Excellent view of panel and over the nose! Having ATC audio, put your video way over the top! My dad and I flew vicariously with you! Feel free to post more with this same format!! 👏👏👏
love this plane...but your avionics cost the same as my whole plane :)
i absoluetly love the cub its my dream aircraft for sure, currently flying around in a 1946 aeronca champ, do you own this aircraft? and what do you do to afford it?
I spent 2 years locked up in a Chinese hotel room while flying for a cargo airline during 2020-2022, except for when I was flying. I was able to save the money for the airplane by doing this, plus I live in a small apartment and don't have a family, so I made sacrifices.
@@EricMassey748 thank you for the reply, who needs a family when you got a cub aha
i absoluetly love the cub its my dream aircraft for sure, currently flying around in a 1946 aeronca champ, do you own this aircraft? and what do you do to afford it?
Hey beautiful cub, how do you think it compares to vans rv7a it seems like in paper they're very close. Only maybe the rv has more power. Thoughts??
RV-7's are great, very different mission than any cub though. If you need to go fast and do light aerobatics, you want the RV-7. If you want to takeoff and land short, especially in places that aren't airports, you would need something closer to a cub. It's like comparing a Ford Mustang to a Ford Bronco; even though they might have the same engine they perform very differently.
Lived in ANC for 12yrs and it's still surprising how much farming is done in the valley.
Very nice airplane, sad that I can’t afford one! Lucky you…
heheheheh that is not the ''normal cubbie 5 pak there....'' wait, 6pak... lol hahahahaha ;) wouldn't be AS BAD ihn that one as that one JIMMYSWORLD dude was trying to get... lol bein in IMC in that thing,,,,,, shudder..... anyhow pretyyyyyy slick aircraft... dig the panel!
2 Savage Norden in 1 plane...
Thanks for the comment, Savage Nordens are no doubt great airplanes!
Why the gravel runway? Is it easier on the Alaskan Bush Wheels or tires in general? Nice video and plane!
Yeah, it saves wear on the tires. Thanks!
This is so cool! Currently studying ground school for PPC, Love all the information you provide and seeing the procedures in real time.
Absolutely gorgeous. Just came back from High Sierra Fly in and STOL drag got to see some amazing carbon cubs. I think I need one lol I don’t think the wife will like living in a tent though. Lol
You can live in a plane but you can’t fly your house!
That’s what I tell her. Lol.
Did you have an aoa indicator by chance? Have a 61 182d, sportsmans stol and vgs. Trying to figure out v speeds😳
No. This one has the sportsman and vgs as well. I think I was doing approaches at around 60, maybe 55 mph ias if I was real light. Have an AoA in the cub I have now and it sure is nice.
congratulations!
Such a short take off wow!
Exactly the plane I want 😂 great vid!!
Section 179 and you can afford it also
Thanks for the info! I'm not savvy enough to pull off anything like that unfortunately!
Beautiful aircraft
Amazing views!
Good short IFR flight.
Nice work!
SHOULD!!
Nice video! That’s a superb airplane and it looks like you’re having a great time putting it through its paces.
I can’t help but wonder…What does L and R actually control on an EI engine? Is it still plug 1 vs plug 2 or top vs bottom?
With the key switch in "R" only the lower plugs are firing, and with the key switch in "L" only the top plugs are firing. There are two 12v powered ignition modules which recieve tach and manifold pressure inputs from system sensors and use that information to set spark timing and intensity. Each module in turn powers 2 ignition coils each (4 total). Each coil in turn powers 1 spark plug on 2 opposing cylinders. The manifold pressure and RPM are passed to the engine instruments by the ignition modules. You can search for the Lightspeed Plasma III CDI manual online for further details, I believe the manual is publicy listed.
85' - 100' T.O. will beat my Cub. You have an Amazing machine 👍
IFR in a Cub. Well done, sir.
Another awesome video! Handled that crosswind landing at the end so smooth
