How are they when viewed at night at say 10k feet in flight?

They can be great from an airplane too! Some of the best I saw were from an MD11 at 35,000 over eastern Siberia back in 2020.

Yes it is unusual. Usually they aren't that strong until closer to midnight, but this time they were pretty strong as soon as the sun went fully down!
