Rusty AIWA AD-6500 Restoration
The AIWA AD-6500 is nice deck from the 70ties. In good condition a true gem, with VU meters, lights and thick solid aluminium front. The one I got has spent some time outside. Its quite rusty, got oxidised buttons and overall looks more like a piece of junk.

One of the limited tape decks in history that came out with Dolby DBX. This deck has received a full restoration, all capacitors and belts replaced. The outside already required some makeover. The result is great. Its an amazing sounding and good looking deck!
Akai GXC-65D Delayed & look at the project stack
I ran into a blocker with the GXC-65D restoration. There are only two ICs in this oldie and one is broken. The ICs are in the pre-amp stage for the left and the right channel. Will left is fine, right remains silent. One of the infamous SANYO LD3141 has failed. Time to go shopping for one!

50 year old calibration reel played on a SONY TC-350
Hi there. I've recently inherited one of these, and I'm incredibly new to turntables! Apparently there's a certain set of speakers that go with the turntable... is this correct? Can anyone point me in the right direction? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Unfair, indeed. That's a dictaphone, not a Walkman. The frequency range on those was usually 250hz-6500khz, i.e. no bass and no highs.
It's an art and you sir are an artist. Looking forward to part 3
Wear a leather glove on the left hand to protect your hand in case the screw drive is slipped off the motor.
Nice Production Sir, would be terrified to buy that in the condition it is in. Black face on CL for sale considering.
Thank you for your time! Excellent example of the tedious detail required to service (without damage) these delicate mechanisms.
You're way more committed than me, I refused to service tape drives anymore.
way too much talking
Had one of those in a „not perfect“ condition, but very impressive build quality and heavy as a truck!
ELO Time.
Ciao.
Good day! Can you tell me the length of the rubber straps on this deck? or send the service manual for this deck to my email. I have a Pioneer ST-S330 deck with exactly the same tape drive mechanism and I can’t find a service manual for it.
@everybody: this is a case with a lot of these decks - bad capacitors. Particularly with Pioneer decks, causing dimmed fluorescent displays
It's November 20, 2024 . I have 480, 482, CR-3, BX-300 ...etc ... I wonder if you'd accept service requests .? I am in the DC area
I do, but I am in Australia.
Thanks, this video got me started on a refurbish of a 615 that I recently picked up. I have most everything working now, but I have a question I'm hoping you (or someone else) can answer. Looking at the parts and schematics, the auto-stop seems to only be a function of playback (not FF or REW). The auto-stop mechanism on my unit successfully stops the takeup idler tire, but I've noticed it doesn't release the PLAY button. Is this normal?
Hello, can you tell us where to find parts, please. I'm having no luck.😢
Ciao Classic HiFi Reviews. Buona giornata. Antonio
The classic mechanism is a Sankyo unit made to Nakamichis specifications.
I had one of these many years ago. I wish I still had it. Great machine.
8:40 A little bit late, but could you use silicon oil for plastics and rubber? Not the common one? Regular oil disperses in the rubber and many plastics and causes harm. Or even turn rubber to goo. There is special rubber that does not interact with regular oil, but I bet it is not in the cassette decks.
Gracias
Timestamp 4:04 shoulda said, "...main purpose is to improve sound... Let me throw some ABBA on the turntable... Ummm... Nope! Doesn't work!" "Ain't no way to improve that." 🤪
I have the SL-J1 myself and did the following: gave a temporary leg to the 45RPM adapter, replaced the cartridge, and installed a belt. Gotta get a preamp so it'll have better audio output vs plugging them directly to my sound bar. Gotta fix the buttons since they seem to act up. I only paid $22.99 for the record player and $51 for parts. Going to get a 3-D printed 45RPM adapter soon (I have a buddy who has a 3-D printer) for a good price.
Great job. I just bought one of these. Hoping it arrives as described, fully working, as I have zero clues. Respect for your detail and patience.
Nice. what deck did you use for reference to record test tape ?
Hello, at minute 2:45,you see the cassette loading. My cassette loading motor turns, but the cassette is not loaded inside ( i have to push it by hand). What could it be? Thanks, Orlando.
Heard about that spring on idle tire, just too temperamental of a machine for me. 1 came up for sale on CL. chickened-out, seller claimed new belts but seem so far from the truth from his limited pics.
Good day. I have the same device however, it is turninh at lower speed and would need some advice
I appreciate that this is an old video, but the pinch roller could be 'roughed up' via careful 'sanding' while the roller is in PLAY mode. Clean periodically with IPA or even acetone, although careful with the latter dripping on to some plastics. I used folded grit paper held with forceps, holding it evenly across the roller. It works unless the roller's rubber is 'shot'. Good photography here, very clear.

What kind of lubricant did you use for the tone arm rail?
You can bend the Adapter for 45 if you have a Hairdryer! Warm it up, and then bend it. With care for sure... but it should work!
How does one find or make those stickers?
Good work, especially tuning BLE, because I have err problem on my ct630. But, if I tune BLE to those tracks with error, will it be able to tune other tapes?
Who is your belt supplier? Thanks for the info.
It is even more effective if you own a high end turntable with an acrylic platter. I have an older Rega with an English made acrylic platter (heavy by acrylic types). The more the record is pressed against the acrylic (weight), the more effect you receive. The back ground is darker, the bass is more pronounced, and the highs are clearer. You're talking about a $1000 turntable with $125 English made acrylic platter for the Rega. I have taken it off and returned the original platter, but the music is noticeably less detailed. With the platter, the records and platter meld into one, with no ringing.
It’s the MC cartridge that needs the extra boost for the signal before going into phono stage. The MM just goes into normal phono stage. SL-7 and SL-10 are a technical marvel but hard to fix. The J series are little better/easier to fix but does not have the record clamp.
Sorry I think this is a self explanatory question but I just wanted to make sure before I buy replacement hinges for the dust cover, I have everything except the clips that hold them on. If I buy replacement hinges do they just slide into the black metal piece on the back of the turntable? Thank you for your help.
Where did you get the belts for your akai gxc-65 cassette tape deck ?
thanks for sharing!
Great, thanks for the hinge hack. Now my dust cover works.🙂
4:10 The tray cover is too hollow in the center. More weight, disc will be higher on the edge. (sorry for the translation)
I've seen one for sale untested. I might take a chance on it
There are only 2 belts needing changed, one for the tone arm scan and one for the lift / drop, It was quite easy! The turntable is direct drive so no belt required. I have just done this job today and i am so delighted to get my 40 year old Awia fully functioning again and giving it to my son to enjoy!. Wonderful engineering and very advanced for 1984
That was my first tape deck purchased in 1982. Sound was amazing. Strange that dbx never took off.
where did you get the belt for the belt drive?
The fit on the spindle will vary from table to table as all are not machined to exactly the same size, but the minute amount of play makes absolutely zero difference in how it performs, its a non-issue. The main benefits of these is to reduce surface resonance of the record and to a lesser degree help with minor warping - I have a few different weights and I decided not to use the heavier ones on my belt drive Harmon Kardon as its a bit harder on the belt, I also have settle mainly on the weight youre using here and for warped records I have a record clamp from record doctor, works like a dream to flatten and dampen the record
Radio waves also affect the area around the sound head.Since the sound head terminals are visible, you can reduce noise by making and installing a shield cover.
hello, I just bought from ebay this turntable. on the speed selector button it is also write "auto" and "manual". do you know what it means? thanx
