I worked as a Panasonic service center in my town for 20 years until Panasonic closed it in the early 2000's. I worked on many of the Technics linear tracking turntables, both belt and direct drive. Two other techs and myself went through factory training on them with a Matsushita tech from Japan in 1981. He was great and showed us the "tricks of the trade." They are not difficult to repair if you have access to service manuals. I still have my SL-DL1 and performed restoration work on it two years ago. When we got a service note from Matsushita in 1992 that they were discontinuing replacement phono cartridges and styli, I purchased two spare cartridges and four spare styli with my employee discount.

I liked your video, i have 4 SL DL1's just can't stop getting them. Technics linears are not hard to fix. Great full auto turntables.

Back at the beginning of recorded sound the Edison cylinder players had a linear tracking arm . The patent for it was issued in February 1878 .

It’s the MC cartridge that needs the extra boost for the signal before going into phono stage. The MM just goes into normal phono stage. SL-7 and SL-10 are a technical marvel but hard to fix. The J series are little better/easier to fix but does not have the record clamp.

You can bend the Adapter for 45 if you have a Hairdryer! Warm it up, and then bend it. With care for sure... but it should work!

I see you got the little Owon benchtop multimeter. I have been looking at those for ages but keep thinking I'll wait and get something with a few more digits. They look great in the reviews.

Yes, for my puroses accuracy is more than I need. What I noticed it that I started measuring/testing a lot more - just by having it right in front of me on the bench.

What kind of lubricant did you use for the tone arm rail?

I have this turntable and it admits a lukewarm feeling on the turntable mat. Once played a Vinyl Record it feels very slightly warm. Is this normal? I have used this player for 5+ years and replayed many of the same vinyl records and it hasn't warped them. Just something I have noticed with this turntable.

This looks kind of like the first Technics linear TT I had in 1982 and loved that machine, So was this the first version of the Techincs linear tt series bc of the J1 marking? I now have 2 - SL -5 and it’s also a great machine.
Oh now I have to check if my SL-5 is a direct drive or not. I know later Technica started adding the Quartz lock on these turntables.

When i was watching you take off the lid, it reminded me to always watch these how to videos to prevent damage. Meaning when I make attempt on my own, I walkways run into something I shouldn’t have done. Many times bc you don’t expect something to not work or break. Lol! So watching others for either what they did wrong or what to look out for. Like something you’re not sure if you turn or just pull out like when k had to just change the cartridge. I first just pull the whole head forward to snap off and later discovered o first had to screw off this screw on the side and after getting off, then pull.
If you’re not careful, you might be trying to fix one thing and after trying, need 4 broken parts you broke. Lol!

Interesting. I have a Technics SL-QL15 linear tracking turntable. It also has the buttons to program the play order of the specific tracks on a record. Although my unit is working perfectly, I do wonder if it would be worth it to get it refurbished and cleaned up. Also, I noticed that you sprayed the cleaning solution directly on the unit. Whenever I need to clean any of my gear, I often like to spray directly into the cloth and then wipe it on the unit that way, so as not to risk spraying into something I don't want it to go.

No. If it's working well don't let anyone anywhere near it.

The "cleaning solution" is pure iso propyl alcohol. It evaporates quickly and leaves not residue. If it would be leaving any residue, I would cover areas that I do not want to be touched of course. If you keep on using it and its not playing up, nothing wrong to leave it alone.

@@ClassicHiFiReviews Okay, with isopropyl that makes sense. It is just whenever I was told if using any type of cleaning solution, to spray it directly into the cloth. Anyway, good point in that I should just leave my Technics SL-Ql15 alone as it is working just fine.
