  • About a month ago I went railfanning for a day in downtown St. Louis. Now, once again, I return not just to the city but the surrounding areas as well. As you’d expect, there’s many railroads in store this time around.
    Music used:
    HOME - 26
    C418 - Stal
    Cheel - Soft Feeling
Haircuts for Men - 空き家 / Alex Picciafuochi - Undersea
St Louis/Illinois map view from Google Earth
Massive thanks to my mom for taking me to these places, my brother for providing the view, and all you viewers for watching what is now 5 years of my train content on social media.

When I Was At Scranton It Was A Little Run Down, Still Could Be Worse But If You Ever Wanna Catch A Delaware Lackawanna Train There's Plenty Of Freight Trains On The East Side Of The States, including Norfolk Southern

10:30 ayy that's my home! It's awesome getting to see Dupo and the Chester Subdivision get some recognition! As someone who lives in Dupo I can proudly say that this town is one of the best places to railfan that I know of (partially because the Chester Sub is one of the only places I railfan) but I digress. Glad to see it mentioned here and I knew that yard tower in the thumbnail looked familiar!
Also Dupo is probably one of the safest places in the area aswell.

Good to know, I’m glad you enjoyed. Brief as my visit was, I did still catch a lot of trains I’d been hoping to see (NS Dash 9s being on the top of that list). I’ve heard that there’s the front end of a Missouri Pacific steam engine in Dupo, though some say it’s been removed from its spot and we didn’t look for it on my trip.

@@imatrainperson1195 Yeah that's Missouri Pacific 124, it was removed in 2022. Although I don't think it's going to be scrapped Rather somebody bought it.

The problem is you went south when you crossed the river to Illinois. If you head north on Rte 203 past the Worldwide Technology Raceway, you will pass quite a few areas of interesting Railroading. You'll pass a yard where there is a private company that rebuilds old passenger cars for private use and has a large number of them in storage (search Gateway Rail Services. You robably could set up an appointment to visit and film), there is a large yard in Madison near Rte 3 that is kinda the border of sketchy/not sketchy and around the steel mills in Granite City where you'll see tons of trains at the crossing by the mill. However, if you want a good, old timey place to watch trains, head north out of Granite on Rte 203/Old Hwy 66 to Mitchell. That is where the UP, NS, and CPR lines split so you'll see these three railroads plus BNSF, Amtrak, and even caught an old Soo Line loco there once. There is also a pretty good dive bar there named the Luna Cafe near the tracks with pretty good food and was made famous by being on Rte 66 and supposedly a watering hole for Al Capone when he'd come to StL.

I did look around the Granite City and Madison area via Google Earth when I was searching for good locations. Unfortunately those places are a lot closer to East St Louis than Dupo, and by going to Dupo we could bypass East StL entirely. But I still get what you mean, that area is loaded with a lot of good trains. In any case, I was still able to catch what I had been looking for.

I’m afraid I won’t be able to go to Canada for a while, but I’m still open to it. I’d love to go to Canada sometime and I have heard the legend of the train there.
