Years ago, in the latter stages of art college, I set about my ‘chair in a field’ project, which at that time, was more innovative than my previous works. Photography was a new medium for me, and like Bresson, I chose to take as many photographs as possible with B&W 35mm rolls, which left me with several photographs to work with. My friend Matthew agreed to be in the shoot and to use the fields...

    Coming back for my Sam Lynch medicine and need it bad today... now 3:10AM. Never heard of someone who paints with strings. With brushes, yes. Strings? Sooo this guy paints a forest wearing its golden coat of sun. Thank you as I just hung it on my soul's wall celebration, my gallery of framed scapes of resonance and rhyme. Wow! This is awesome. It evokes the same magical sound as listening to Nick's original version, and I haven't heard anyone else come even close to getting the same feeling. Marvellous. This is my yardstick to learn from now, after struggling with the clarity of Nicks home recording.

    Fabulous. Saw in a documentary where a producer was saying Nick Drake 's finger picking was so consistent and strong. Not everyone can finger pick with such strength and precision. …Oh I hope you mean the dog? And you would be correct for the dog was also deaf and partially blind. I know this because the lady came back all flustered and panic stricken, asking if I had seen said dog (I can’t remember his name 😣), he had wandered off and could not respond to any calls or visual cues sufficiently. We didn’t have much luck so we exchanged numbers and went our ways thinking the worst but we got a call later from the local pub (who happened to be frying sausages for lunch), that he was there! So amazing his sense of smell got him home.

    Sounds great, Sam! I just learned this piece but am finger picking each note individually. Do you happen to know if your technique is how Nick played it vs the individual finger picking? Again, great performance and backdrop 👍

    • @sam-lynch
      @sam-lynch 6 місяців тому

      That is a good question, Steve. I think Nick was picking most strings individually as you are, although he misses the 6th string 27 seconds into Introduction, as his thumb may have overshot its rightful position, indicative of playing two or more strings. The texture of the picking pattern must be from utilizing most fingers. In most photographs of Nick playing guitar he appears to be wrist bracing / anchoring on or around the bridge for accuracy.

    I've noticed in your version that you strike the low C a lot more than in the original, and I like the sound of it, arguably more than the original. Where did you get the idea for it and how do you manage the timing on it?

    • @sam-lynch
      @sam-lynch 6 місяців тому

      Nick tended to attack the bass note more generously in his recordings outside of the studio, and float around with other arabesque notes/slides/hammer-ons. This one is a beautiful little recording he made with such ideas - ua-cam.com/video/HV42hEH6-ow/v-deo.html Adding the notes in will take practice, as the low C is utilized between the main refrain cluster, and this will feel unnatural.

    • @sam-lynch
      @sam-lynch 7 місяців тому

      Thank you. In the summer of 2004, I rented a room in a cottage and worked nearby doing bicycle repairs. By then I was obsessed with Nick Drake and everyday I would spend around four hours working out several of his songs, either holed up in the cottage or at work between jobs. This was made easier by Chris Healy having already scored most of Nick’s work, with those left unscored still with hints towards tunings and possible chord shapes. He published his workings online, which since then has become a masterwork. You can see his workings here nickdraketabs.co.uk I also came to know some alternative ideas at The Annual Nick Drake Gathering, by observing and speaking with musicians, which is where I met Chris Healy funnily enough. In 2018 I revisited Nick Drake’s work in a similarly obsessive manor when I became seriously unwell. I thought by working on his songs again would make me feel better.
