    Thanks for the video. The Red looks like a great unit especially when used with a Holo Audio DAC. I have the Cyan 2 but stream Qobuz and I wanted to control with just my iPad so I went with an Innuos Zen Mk3 streamer. Their Sense app works great with Qobuz controlled from my iPad. It also has a CD ripper and 1TB of storage so great for storing and playing my CD content too.

    You could have had all those boards out if you didn't waste time talking about parts that had nothing to do with the task at hand. "Don''t touch the bearing!" would have been good enough. You get into trouble when you start guessing on the tech. Heat to remove bearing cap and it will twist right off. I did need you video to show somebody what they were up against. Their dec is running backwards when he turns it on and he can't get anybody to work on his SP10 mark 2.

    another one that comes to say that the industry is wrong in its standards, friend, the SM7b and the RE20 are the leaders of the pack, then there are hundreds of dynamic microphones with good flavor, but today I would dare to tell you that even the Rode Procaster It is ahead of the 421, it had its chance to become standard and it lost it, today, I prefer the Presonus PD-77 over the 421, you are too late, My deepest condolences to 421 who will never have another opportunity in this industry, his time has passed.

      That might be internal to your Antelope. This is more for 60Hz power line noise. If you have broadband noise or hiss, I would suggest using a Klark Teknik CT1 booster or a Cloud Lifter. 57db of gain is a lot to ask from most mic preamps.

    Like all manufacturers, Schiit builds its products to a price point. That necessitates leaving out improvements in components in all but the most expensive ones, though cost is no guarantee of performance. In addition to the significant upgrade that better tubes provide for the Lyr+, upgrading to a better power cord is likely to further improve fidelity. Minor but noticeable improvements in fidelity can be obtained by replacing the cheap fuse and with Herbie Audio Labs Tube Dampers and Herbie's decoupling and micro-absorption materials. Plus, ByBee Audio's Quantum Signal Enhancer (QSE) has its advocates. Of course, the other components in the audio chain effect fidelity and even the cabling connecting them matters. Audio's 'dirty little secret' (DLS) is that everything counts, which means that useful accessories and 'tweaks' can cost as much as and even more than the components themselves. Finally, tweaks can positively affect one component and negatively affect another component. So tweaks are a "rabbit hole" of unknown depth. Welcome to the Matrix, Neo ;-)

    • @stereoazimuth
      @stereoazimuth Місяць тому

      Correct, and Jason does not hide the fact that Schiit does not use fancy expensive internal components. He does use good components and even the better ones in strategic places, but they certainly are not using the boutique parts. I recently saw a Mjolnir 2 that could not fit in the case anymore because the caps were so big around it. You can put a V8 and quad turbos in a Civic, but is is practical? PS - power cords are a whole different can of worms and on normal product reviews I do not mention things like that.

Did you find that this device helps to eliminate these anomalies? I was thinking that since this device has optical out, perhaps using that path would help to eliminate electrical noise coming from the pc?

    Curiosity for those that own this Ted.. I have been using the Cyan2 for a few months long with a Wiim pro. I’d be interested in having this Holo Red but only have an iPhone. Iam guessing all this can be setup on a phone as like on a computer (?). By chance can I use a ‘less common’ music service that is included with my UA-cam (UA-cam music) as well as the others listed here? Realizing of coarse it’s not a premium service.. would i experience a higher quality listening experiences using the Red and giving up the Wimmas a steamer in your opinion? That’s what this option all about quality stream?

    • @stereoazimuth
      @stereoazimuth 2 місяці тому

      Yes, you can use an iPhone for setup. With YT music, you would still probably have to use UPnP with something like mconnect for iOS or BubbleUPnP for Android. Tim Kitsune likes to run his Red with the USB out into the USB input on the May. I still think this is a better than what is in the Cyan and certainly better than the Wiim.

    Great video! Thank you for making this. Can you comment on which services require exclusive access to an output, and how that affects the ergonomics? For instance, is it possible to have Roon Read and Tidal Connect both output to the native outputs (SPDIF/I2S, etc) and switch from one to another just by stopping playback in one app and starting playback in another, without having to mess with the Red configs? Another burning question - why is there no output selection under NAA? How does determine where it outputs, or does it require exclusive access to the entire device if enabled? Hope you don't feel like Holo Audio tech support, information about the ergonomics of the Red is really hard to come by and you just became the #1 source on the internet :)

    • @stereoazimuth
      @stereoazimuth 2 місяці тому

      I do not use Tidal, but if you play Tidal through Roon, then it will use the Roon output. But yes, you can switch like you said. I did this with normal UPnP and with Roon. Just make sure to stop the player and not just pause. The services will tell you what is exclusive when you select them as you see in the video. I think the last two options are, but I cannot remember. I don't use Red OS on a daily basis. There is no output under NAA because I believe those are just going to default to the main outs and there might be a selection of outputs within NAA, I am not sure.

    You made my day! Great vid👍👍 I had to discover the software like you but I had to figure out an extra step. Using my 2013 iMac I could not login to the RED software. ROON resides on a Mac Mini M1 (headless) in another room so what I did was to use Remote Sharing and pull up a Google web browser remotely and type in the red IP address and then IT WORKED! I have my RED connected to my Holo Cyan2 with a USB cable. I was able play several DSD files I got for free from Steve Guttenberg/HD Tracks and it plays just fine. I plan to go back in to the RED setup and take a look at the USB Redirector like you demoed. I have Airplay 2 going as well so I’ll try the RED without Airplay 2 on and see if I notice a sound quality improvement. Many thanks to you for your first RED video to inspire me to buy it. As a great sounding streamer would you also call it a transport, much like a CD transport? Best to you👍👍

    • @stereoazimuth

      I would not call it a transport, because there are no moving parts. I guess it is kind of moving the bits from one to the next, but Transport is more or less taken. Streamer or DDC is probably the best descriptor.

    Thanks for the video man! I was exactly looking for something like this and was wondering why there aren't any! Couple of extra capacitors in a ultra low noise PSU are not really worth the extra 150 euros. I'm going to build mine in the next days.

    • @ariansadafi4033
      @ariansadafi4033 2 місяці тому

      So for anyone reading this later! I tried it out. First I tried to measure the noise with a Smartscope digital oscilloscope. The results were quite disappointing. But I believe the oscilloscope was on itself quite noisy on that level (I was aiming for 5v for my Wiim Pro Plus). I even ordered two sets of caps only to know that I have the good Nichicons (they are quite hard to find, just like the hammond). Later I also added another inductor+100uF cap after the main caps trying to build a second stage low cut. Also a resistor in parallel helped to reduce some high frequency noise. I can’t exactly tell before testing with a proper high res scope. But still I don’t believe I could go below 10uV level by any means. And maybe for 5V there are cheaper options than the hammond. I paid 25€ for a Chinese one. But anyway I connected it to my wiim and call me crazy but I can really hear a better bass punch and deeper sound stage. 🤣🤣 thanks again for the video. It’s definitely a cool project and totally worth the time to avoid a +200€ PSU.

    I’m a Holo May DAC owner and I also own Kitsune’s Sigixr D2D converter, so I am familiar with how amazing all their products are. And I haven’t tried the Red. Having said that, I really like the Sonore Signature Rendu network bridge, because it stops all the noise that comes through Cat 6 copper cables, which act like noisy antennas. It uses a fiber optical connection, which essentially isolates all the noise from your streamer/computer and the network from getting into your DAC. It sounds fabulous and makes a difference with a high end DAC like the Holo May.

    • @stereoazimuth

      @@stereoazimuth Yes but there are also lower cost one too I think. I got the top of the line because it was basically parity for the KTE Holo May. If I has a less expensie lower performing DAC I would have probably gone with the lower priced model, but I was going for overkill. I also got the KTE Sigexur D2D converter, which it turns out I probably didn’t need because the input to the Holo May is plenty good already and I barely heard any difference. But there was a noticeable difference from going from my M1 Mac Mini directly into my dac via usb vs. using the Sonore network bridge. The difference was about 7-8% improvement in overall SQ.

      @@stereoazimuth Also Tp-Link makes a $20 ethernet to SFP fiber adapter. So for around $200 you can get two of them and a sfp network switch (netgear) that will allow you to isolate your computer from your DAC. I use those with the Sonore transport, but it should also work with the Red as well and provide further noise reduction.

    this device works with dts?

      Not sure on that one, but as long as you have a player that just passes through the DTS to the USB device, then it should work. I don't have a DTS decoder to try.

    why would anyone cut a hole in the front driver foam?!? why not just remove the whole thing? better yet, why not just leave them alone?! sennheiser foam is acoustically transparent!

    • @stereoazimuth
      @stereoazimuth 2 місяці тому

      The foam provides damping. Cutting a hole removes damping, but not ALL the damping.

    Same PI based approach as Volumio Rivo. That's a comparison that needs to be done before people buy a new shiny 😊

      Not all Pi's are created equal. I mean, it will run Volumio. The Rivo is a locked system and slightly more expensive than the Red.

    Thank you for this video. Do you find some changes in the audio quality, dinamics, etc, using the GND Defender?

    • @stereoazimuth
      @stereoazimuth 3 місяці тому

      Not at all. No loss of dynamics. I would not say there was a real improvement except the hum is gone. So it does not add and does what it supposed to do.

    USB straight from my phone or Wiim Ultra to my Geshelli R2S dac sounds phenomenal. I love USB.
