    I was taught/learned that the ultimate tonearm would be defined as an infinitely rigid nothing. The closest tonearm I'm aware of that meets that definition is a straight arm made of tapered carbon fiber called the Black Widow by Infinity. At stylus, it has an effective mass of a mere 3 grams. If anyone here knows of a lighter high compliance arm I would love to hear about it.

    I agree with you! Man you are only like a week ahead of me. I did not want to spring for the official windscreen, but I also didn't want just some random cheap one, so I bought one meant for the e906/609. Ended up having to trim about 3/4" off the back of it. It's some nice dense foam and has a cool square look that somewhat mimics the design of the mesh area on the business end of the 421. I have a comparison video putting it up against the RE20, but I'm going to do another better one soon. The levels are way too low on that last video so it'll be removed once I have the new one done. Just wanted to say I 100% agree on the sound of this vs the SM7, and I even like it better than my RE20. If I had heard a comparison of the 421 vs the RE20 for just speaking, I probably would have just gotten a 421 originally. It's just a mic I've always wanted to have around, and I finally found a good deal one one. Versatile is definitely the word for it. I'm convinced you could put it on literally anything and it would sound good.

    • @stereoazimuth
      @stereoazimuth 22 дні тому

      I actually had the windscreen many months before doing this video. I was about to sell my SM7, so I thought I needed to a video on it since the SM7 is so beloved, but I did not love it. RE20's are also nice, but have the foam on the inside, which makes it harder to replace over time. They also have a slightly lower output, but still very good and what I would call the broadcast standard.

  • @mertonnephake
    @mertonnephake Місяць тому

    I feel the reason for the VTA offset among old models of SL-1200 is just the thickness of the supplied mat. The MK2’s came with the thickest ones, they were 6 mm, I think there were also 4 or 5 mm mats (with different part number). I know the newest rubber ones were just 3 mm and I’m guessing that felt slipmats were likely only 2 mm, but honestly I haven’t measured them. I remember I’ve read on a forum that the new models 1200G and GR are supplied the 3 mm rubber mat, and unlike the G model which has the platter taller thanks to its brass upper part, the 3 mm mat was not thick enough for some cartridges on the GR, so their owners had to use either spacers or two mats (or higher ones if they found it), the original 6 mm mats were not easy to find or they were quite pricey. (The arm assemblies on the new models are actually different from the old ones, so in that case a different height wouldn’t surprise me.)

      I recently made two pair of Mogami 2497 and it is very close to the LC-1. The 2497 is a bit more flexible, but man it is huge. You do need the right connectors with it because normal RCA connectors won’t do. But overall it is almost nearly as good as the LC-1 in SQ.

    A nice and simple solution, I was in the throws of making a linear supply, however I will have to try this. Apart from me replacing the barrel connectors with USB ones as my target DAC is an SMSL 5V device, I will probably add some clip on ceramic cores and a 0.1uf ceramic cap straight across the output jack. Those big electro"s and iron core inductor are great at low frequencies, but not so with very high frequencies. for best results with the 0.1 put is as close as possible to the output jack, with the shortest leads, if one gets into radio and RF you soon learn this stuff.

    • @paulstubbs7678

      @@Douglas_Blake_579 Yes, definitely not something to hang off a computers USB port, the DAC I speak of has a separate USB port just for power, so I will have to carefully choose the power supply to suit. Some supplies are more happy starting up into such a load as they ramp up, so maybe happy, as opposed to just shoving the cap box into an already powered up supply. I've done something simular with a Raspberry Pi 400, so it could better handy a hard drive starting up, hanging off a USB port, without the cap I had all sorts of strange crashes etc.

    • @stereoazimuth

      I do agree I would not put directly on a ISB port on a computer or laptop, but a direct wall supplied power supply. That dead short will only be very quick, but a lower amp out will take more time to charge those caps.

    Very good. A couple of things. The case must be metal and continuous [no gaps]. The limit on voltage is limited by the voltage rating of the capacitors. A fuse might not be a bad thing to include.

    • @stereoazimuth
      @stereoazimuth 2 місяці тому

      Not really. You can make a case out of plastic. I don’t see why not. And yes, limited on voltage of the caps. I do mention this on the video. A fuse is fine, but most units running g DC don’t have a fuse. And then the rating will change depending on voltage and current draw. A fuse would only protect the power supply in case of a short.

    Basically this is a 2nd order LC filter with a frequency of 30Hz. This also explains why the "wobble" of your linear source (which is either the mains frequency or twice the mains frequency) is still slightly visible. If using plugs I would invest the few extra cents and install a fuse and an asymmetric TVS diode. The TVS diode will act as an reverse polarity and overvoltage protection and with overvoltage for too long will go short and protect the expensive capacitors and preventing the ElectroBoom effect.

    Hello When you talk about the Vali 2 , having « harsch top end « . Are you talking about Vali 2 + or ++ or the Original Vali 2. Cause the Original Vali 2 has smoother top ends then the + ++. Cause some review put the sound of the Piety in par with the OG Vali 2

      The 2+ and the 2++. Because yes, the 2 has a smoother more rolled off top end. The Piety is more laid back than the Vali 2 as well as a bit more mid-centric. I think the Piety is much more enjoyable amp though with more clarity.

    I wasn't that impressed with the Piety because I like to listen to my music really loud. Pietus Maximus tho........now that's the stuff dreams are made of.

      I have not heard the Pietus Maximus yet, at least the final version, but the one prototype I heard was a good improvement. I have a final version coming my way soon.

      @@stereoazimuth I've noticed, because I got my hands on a hd6xx finally, the there's a serious synergy between that and the PMax. 660s2 also sounds stellar, but some of my others not as much. Just wish the little Piety pushed more sound thu it.....then again....I haven't tried it with the 6xx...
