"1941" is a good Christmas movie, I think. And, it's also one of the most comical movies ever made.
Never saw it. We'll put it on the list of ones to watch, which I may never get around to. Lol. I know I've heard good things about it.
Wonderful video
Thank you! I'm glad you found it helpful.
Hi Mandy, technically speaking wood is a composite. Good work.
Really? I thought it was just when it was mixed with something else. Wouldn't raw wood just be wood? Glad to learn something new though. Thanks!!
long cellulose fibres held together by lignine, if you want the technicality of it 🙂
Very cool. Knowing that, I may not make the same mistake with another one. Thanks for the info!
You do awesome work! Keep rocking the figures.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you like it!
For paint stripping delicate objects you can get a sand blaster that will connect to a compressor. Build a blasting box out of a plastic see through bin and use a gentle abrasive (like walnut shell) starting on low PSI and increasing until you get the results you like. That nose was probably done for any which way you look at it though.
I agree on the nose. I'm not sure I do enough to warrant the purchase of a sand blaster, but that is a great idea! I may still look into that anyway, just for the sheer "cool" factor of having a sand blaster. Thank you for the suggestion, and of course for watching!
What an incredible recovery! And thank you back! It's smaller channels who work so hard to create a community. I try to interact with smaller channels because they are so happy to have others comment and react to them. I'm still a small channel and I have made so many friends through other channels with less than 5k subs. Enjoy the Holidays! -John
Thanks! And yes, we've been watching your channel. Planning to reach out to you about a collaboration after the holidays, so look for that if you're interested. I think it would be fun!
@@mandysminis thank you so much! I'd love to do that!
2:42 When you said “He’s not actually wood, he’s composite” I winced. Anyone who’s had something made of MDF get wet would know what happens next.
Yeah... I'm actually still curious how he would have turned out if I didn't soak him. Luckily, there's lots of modern tutorials about how to make your own composite to give me the idea for the fix.
Does the solvent free UHU have the same effect?
I haven't used it, so im not sure. However, I did take a class with the late, great Michelle Farnsworth, and she said the German manufactured uhu works better, so I would guess that would be the difference? I got 3 tubes in that class for various reasons, so I haven't actually had to buy my own yet.
@@mandysminis the UHU glue Solvent free says it's from Germany. UPDATE. Would not recommend. It does not give off that stringy effect
Thanks so much for the correction!! That's good to know.
What colors did you use for the skin?
I'm not sure about the exact colors, but the mid tone was reaper miniatures olive skin tone. Probably chestnut brown (reddish brown) shadow and ak interactive sunny skin tone for the highlight and a glaze of scale 75 fuchsia.
@mandysminis thank you.
@@mikebalis9963My pleasure. Remember, there's nothing special with the exact brands, so translate those into those you already own.
You do nice work!
Thank you very much! I'm glad you like it. I've done a couple skin tutorials so far and am planning a few more. Thank you for watching!!
That looks so much better than the products decoration. Bravo!
Thanks so much! I'm so glad you liked it!
Welcome Taylor! Thanks for the video. I think marks of wear and time are the things that bring life to pieces of terrain and real building too! They help to tell a story behind
Well said! I couldn't agree more. It's every bit as important as basing since it is setting a scene. No matter what game you're playing, a good scene helps the enjoyment and immersion. Thanks!
This is a great video! You got a sub :)
Thanks for the sub! I'm glad I could be useful. Welcome and thanks again!!
I have 5 cats too! Keep them locked out of my hobby space
Me too. Thats why they are not typically in my videos. Wet paint and cat hair make for a bad mix. Not to mention the havoc with them chewing on my brushes, hiding them and attacking the figures and breaking them.
i was always wondering, do they shave those sables to get the hair or... you know...
Good question... so I looked into it. What I found is: The hair comes from the tail of the kolinsky, a type of weasel. The "finest" brushes are made from the male hair, but most brushes are a mix of male and female hair. The hair is harvested in Siberia and the Far East, either from trapping or as a byproduct of farming.
Pretty sure they don't "do in" the animal since it's more profitable to have the hair keep growing.
yes. congrats and celebrations are in order. 🎉 😊 bloopers…. very cool. thanks !!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed.
Aw congrats on the 1k Mandy. Been here from the beginning cause I love yours and Ben's style. Videos are always very relaxing and informative with a sprinkling of added fun. Right, now on to the 10k mark!!
Thank you so much!! Yeah, and we've loved having you. You were our first livestream commentor. I'm so glad you are enjoying them! Thanks again!!
OMG!! 🎉🎉🎉 Congratulations!! I really like your videos, they are heartwarming and motivating 😊
Thanks so much. That's my whole goal, and it means so much to me. I'm so glad to have you along this journey as I know you've been with me a while now. Thank you!
Congrats on 1,000 subs! Well, I'm 999th, so I'm certain that by the time you read this, you'll be over 1k. Just discovered your channel, and I like your style. Plus, you taught me a couple things new. I look forward to seeing what's to come!
Wow, thanks! Your prediction was right on. I'm so amazed! I'm so glad you found us and that it was helpful (my ultimate goal). I look forward to hearing from you more!! Thanks again!
Nice guide! I use a lot of those same products and a few others not mentioned. You might want to check your thumbnail, there's a teeny tiny spelling error. Keep up the amazing work, you're almost to 1K! -John
Thanks you! Opps... how'd that get past 2 of us!? Lol. Appreciate the heads up.
@@mandysminis no worries. Us small channels gotta look out for each other 😎
Definitely. And congrats on your 1,000! 😁
Thank you so much! -John
Great video! I was thinking you added to much highlighting until you showed the min under different lights and it looked so much better. One thing I do on my own minis is to use a glossy black to bring out the shapes that are already there. After minimal highlighting dull coat/cheating coat balances it out. I’ll have to find a bottle of nightmare black.
Yeah, playing with finishes like gloss vs matt is a great way to get different effects. Thanks!
Great vid. Now I need to apply this to black fur. Thanks.
Can't wait to see it! Thanks!!
😁👍🏼 ….. it’s starting. Just glued it to the base.
Yay!!!
I don’t paint as quickly as you. Hopefully won’t take toooooo long.
Lol. Some projects take a day or two.... others are more than 6 months in the making. All that matters is that you're happy with the final result.
Thanks for this, very helpful and i love your content.
I'm so glad to hear it. Thank you!!
Even with the limited colours it still looks great!
Thank you! Limited pallet, doesn't mean you can't have great figures and mixing colors adds so much. Thanks for watching!
just my two cents, but speed painting doesnt always equal it being a rush job. I enjoy the speedpaint process, certainly not rushing through them at all though.
Everyone has their own speed painting process. I'd love to hear yours! I also think enjoyment rules all, so if you have a system you enjoy, you're golden. That's what really matters.
@@mandysminis i rarely prime in black, generally i prime gray and then dry brush white. I did prime with necrotic flesh, and dry brush with a really light tanish white for a horde of zombies once which came out cool, but beyond that I guess i just take my time a bit more. I see some people rock out multiple minis in like an hour. My mind just wont allow me not to be more detailed about it. so technically it's speed painting, but i also still go back in and dress it up a bit more. also i hate eyes. sooooo much.
I agree. I can paint fast, but I'd rather enjoy it and take my time. That's the point of a hobby, right? The details really make all the difference. Eyes are a challenge. Did you see my video on how I do them? It works for me. It just takes practice. Lots and LOTS of practice.
Fantastic work, as always. Thanks 👍🏼😁
Thanks you very much!
@@mandysminis🙏😁
Looks great! I'm going to have to try that! Gotta ask though, what is the figure? I'd love to paint it up as well! Almost at a thousand subscribers! Keep up the great work! -John
Thanks. Glad you like it! The figure is from SFG Godtear. It was given to us at adepticon a few years back.
You should give it a try. It's a lot of fun to play with. Thanks again!
For me 4 hours would be an incredibly fast mini. The only actual army I ever tried was my space marines and that took much longer as I was picky about each of my soldiers looked before they died a horrible painful death on the table. Do blood bowl teams count? I saw some good tips in there. Face and skin first then working your way out is good until I realize my mini is really over accessorized. Great looking mini!
Thanks! Yes, I believe blood bowl counts.... i count any mini your painting. I still prefer to take longer, but sometimes you just have to rush. I think 4 hours is really fast for a quality mini.
And it's really too bad when they over accessorize a mini. I don't like that as I feel it's unnecessary and always takes the focus to the wrong place and hides a bit of the paint job.
Im not a huge fan of speed painting myself. although painting armies does have a benefit. Nice job on those eyes! Keep up on the amazing work! -John
Thanks! I'll keep cranking it out as long as amazing people like you keep watching. Really appreciate it!
I started with chibi’s but the ones I work on are between 4” - 6” tall. Absolutely agree that they are great for learning!
I love the videos you upload to your channel, they always feel comforting and motivating. Thank you very much!
I'm so glad! I'm always here when you need a "pick me up." Thanks for watching!
100%!!!! Make it 500%! This is another great video about things many painters need to hear. Some things came easier than others but There is no skill in my toolbox that did require incredible investment of time and effort. And that means everything from painting minis to welding. You made painting the genie look easy but there’s no way to show the work and endless effort that went into her. Even so Those who know what to look for can see it and it shines. Nice shoutout to more traditional painters too. We could not do this without learning from them first. Keep it up!!!!!
Aww... you're making me blush. Lol. Thanks, though!
"Art is just working on shit, until it isn't shit anymore." Loudermilk season 3. Good video.
I love that! Thanks.
Sage advice !!
Great vid. Awesome advice. That’s just the way it is for us Humans…. gotta put the time and effort in. A lot. Then, it slowly gets better. Said to me once by an Old Grey Wizard, “Experience keeps you from making mistakes. Mistakes bring experience.” Or something like that. A vicious little cycle.
That is another really cool idea! Love that one, too. One of the most important things to me is sharing the message you can do it if you choose to. If you don't want to, that's good too, but you still can. Unlimited potential in all of us! Thanks!!
Great discussion, I feel like a lot of people get easily discouraged when they don't get fast, easy & good results, these days... It takes time! Also, I really like the effect of the "smoke" on the mini!
So true! That's why I thought it was a good message to get out there. I was thinking I might do a tutorial on the iridescent effect. Do let me know if you'd like to see that. Thanks!
@@mandysminis definitely!
Its great to see this process on a larger figure-thank you this is really helpful. I might have missed it, but what bust is this?
Glad it was helpful! I always try to use larger figures so it's easier to see on camera. The figure is a 3D print from White Werewolf Tavern. They have a ton of great busts. Here's the link: www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-greta-fish-scale-bust-pre-supported-235636 Thanks for watching and reaching out!
Another excellent video! Your end result look amazing as always. I will confess that I love using metallic paints but they often do not shade or highlight well. You may have an achieved a good workaround here.
Thank you very much! Yeah, I love metallic too, but it's good to have more tools in your arsenal.
the end product looks good. i need to practice some. i printed out a bunch of weapons to play with.
Thanks! That's how I started. Just doing axes. It's a hard technique. That's why I try to make it bite size as I try to progress to being good at it. Lol.
Hi, I'm a total beginner and I very appreciate your tutorial video. The question I'm always asking to me is why do we use the base coat (medium rust) as we cover it totally with the next coat ? Many thanks for this great video
Great question. That threw me off for a while when I was first starting too. While it looks like it's totally covered, it isn't. It shows in all the under parts and deepest recesses. While hard to see on film, if you lift the model up, you'll see mostly the rust color when looking at the bottom of the arm/hand, chin, between the fingers and places like that. For more dramatic lighting, you can keep even more of that shadow color showing. Also, since acrylic paints are translucent (you can see through a coat of it) the darker color on the bottom gives the figure more vibrancy and depth as you add more layers on top. I go into more detail on it in my layering video: ua-cam.com/video/3-DWxMd_h-0/v-deo.html I hope that helps, but please let me know if you have any more questions and thank you for watching!
just got some uhu glue to add saliva for a painting contest. I'm looking forward to how it can enhance my miniature!
That is awesome! Please send me a pic of contest piece when you're done as I'd love to see it!! Good luck in the contest and thanks for watching!
As a long time Gen Con attendee (and ZOE fan) it's great that you were able to give it a shot. I do find the crowds annyoing and spend a lot less time in the exhibit hall than I used to. Last year I entered the mini painting competition for the first time (on what was probably my 30th Gen Con.) It was more fun than I expected to have minis in the case and to be competing with the likes of Vince Venturella and all the other great painters there. I've enjoyed meeting content creators at conventions (just Gen Con and Adepticon for me). I'd happily attend a class if you wanted to teach at one of those conventions 🙂
I'm so glad to hear your experience! Great job for entering the competition... that's how I feel entering the golden demon. I really appreciate the vote of confidence about one of my classes at these cons, and I do have plans to do so in the future (if not 2025, 2026 for sure). Just did a class locally this past weekend. I'm getting my in-person teaching practice on the locals first, lol. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
The Gamers : Dorkness Rising is the BEST movie !!! 💥💥💥
Totally agree!! I watch it regularly and recommend it all the time. Then I feel sad because I don't get the first time joy anymore, being able to quote the whole movie. However, now that the new kickstarted has funded.....
Yeah, pretty excited about another movie. Dorkness Rising and Hands of Fate were both very enjoyable. Brought back so many gaming memories.
I was so bummed out they were out of the pile of dead bards mini when I got there. Lol.
