Han, I really like you- I do BUT don’t feed a horse and then ride it. You really risk Colic with doing that. I’m not being horrible, I just would hate for that to happen. Han, why are you so scared? Affie’s doing EVERYTHING you ask of her. She’s incredible. Is it a kick along type you want? Is Affie being in front of the leg scare you? Would you sell her for something that doesn’t scare you? Maybe it’s worth having a big think because honestly, Affie’s a wonderful little mare. ❤️

It’s actually been proven that feeding a horse 30mins before riding can reduce ulcers as it lines the stomach and there is less of a acid splash back. So I feed her before I ride her on purpose. X

She really is a wonderful mare but remember social media isn’t everything you see. Aff has a good rear and buck on her which is why she can worry me. I wouldn’t ever sell her as that would be incredibly irresponsible due to all of her issues. In the summer she’s a delight, in the winter I just have to deal with her the best I can

Follow your instincts. If you don't think you should do it, then don't. Han, why are you so nervous? I think Americans lunge their horses much more than Brits do. In this case, many American riders would stop, lunge the horse, and then try the jump. Or if they knew the horse was spicy to begin with, they would have lunged it before mounting. The stupidest thing I ever saw was a top British rider who constantly complained that her horse always acted up in outdoor arenas. You'd see that horse buck as soon as she got on it. I suggested that she lunge the horse before she mounted it. She went on complaining for the next 4 weeks until I wouldn't watch her videos anymore because I was tired of the whining. Finally her trainer told her to lunge the horse before she mounted. She did. The horse was perfectly calm in the rink and won the competition. If the horse is acting up because she hasn't jumped in a while, lunge her first and help ensure your own safety.

    • @Nohorsehan
      @Nohorsehan 5 днів тому

I did actually lunge her this day. She’s fine in the summer/warmer months, she struggles with her PSSM in the winter. So I’m just getting used to this slightly wild horse that I haven’t had to sit on for a good 6 months because she’s been delightful. It’s a double edged sword thought because really I’d like to give her winter off if her muscles are tight, however, giving her the winter off would make her sooo much worse because she was to be in daily work for her PSSM. Appreciate your advice and I’d agree that we don’t tend to lunge as much here. X

I'm not going to be negative, I totally no where your coming from... saying your gonna die lol, but you are a great rider, and you and Affie are amazing together! When you say your gonna die try reversing and saying I'm not gonna die today, don't feel like it, it definitely helps me. And its only cause you had major issues at the start, I did as well, so I do feel you. But I love watching you ride, and jumping. Thanks from New Zealand 😊

This video made me a bit sad to be honest. You two are such a great pair but I feel like your fear is really messing it up for you. There's so much negativity in your speech and body language while you're on there, and I feel like that is making you way more scared... Obviously what it looks like is wayyy different than what you feel in this video. She was just happy to be jumping and I kind of feel like you're projecting on her: you're scared, but you're feeling that as though she's a ticking bomb. There's really no need for that, as you're making it worse for yourself, I think. I hope you still have fun riding, because it doesn't really feel like that... Fear is so human but is actually really well treatable, so getting some mental help could definitely do so much for you!! You are 100% capable of riding Affie, but at this moment it looks like you really don't enjoy it. Obviously this is one time and can be different every ride you have, but the negative body language and language are really bringing you down I think :/

One more advice nothing to do with riding or her: This exercise encouraged her sort of running around because the jumps were on one side of a large arena. Work on a bit tighter line so she doesn't have all that time to gain momentum running around to the next cycle.

affine is such a good girl, and she isn’t afraid! It seems as if you struggle with your confidence slightly, I would recommend maybe perhaps having lessons every week or so. It can help give you a little bit of guidance and insight with Affie. With my riding, I used to have rubbish confidence, I would stress myself and my horse out every lesson. A little while ago, my whole mindset changed to ‘ oh just get on and do it. ‘ and I’ve really learned a lot and actually enjoyed riding. Just do things, Han, and if affie can’t she will make it known. Although if you’re doing something for the vlog or for us and you genuinely don’t wanna, don’t. We’re not bothered if it means your confidence gets better. I’m only saying if it’s something you’ve beeen told to do or something that you wanna accomplish, just give it a go, and if it goes wrong, take a step back and work up to it again. Your an incredible rider, Han, you know that and Affie does to! ❤

If you feel the need to jump by yourself and you're not feeling so brave, chant, things to yourself like, rhythm, straightness, look up....anything that may keep you confident and brave and not thinking of negative stuff, or if you are feeling not so brave and a bit unconfident, do pole exercises and work you way up. Having said that, you did awesome!!!! You did awesome keeping your brave and being fair to her as well. Also a wee trick I found that helps me is counting the amount of times I DIDN'T fall off during the ride, any spook, look or any situation where a gasp, howl or swearing occurs from you counts as a NOT FALLING off, it seriously beats the usual - I fell off doing X you can say - I didn't fall off 6xs (or however many)... and remember keep having fun!

I just love your story it reminds me so much of my Arabian mare and myself it also took us 4 years to get our properly. (She’s a pure dressage horse) and she also has PSSM 2 and took me a long time to figure out. The winters are so hard I have to give my mare a month off every year when the weather is changing or she goes kinda funny mentally. I think it’s related to the PSSM. I love watching you both so much and I’m glad you’ve made it through and are still together. I blanket really heavy in the winter and am deeply attached to my quarter sheets in the winter to help her hind end stay warm.

Okay, I mean this in the nicest possible way… do u actually enjoy riding? The problem isn’t Affie I’m afraid. She’s game. What u have to remember is the last yr you’ve uped ur riding, you’ve had more professional training and eyes on so Affie has matured and is ready to level up and you’re holding her bk. You just make excuses for herPSSM, her being fresh, it being winter, her being cold backed. The list goes on. In parts of the video you had your reins so short you were affecting her way of going and in turn created the short bouncy canter. You need to ride forward and let her open up, you were ridged and not sitting the canter. I know I’m coming across negative but it’s hard not to after that vlog, you passed all ur nerves onto her when actually she’s game and ready to jump and learn. You’re a capable rider, it’s okay riding different horses I agree there, but it’s no good if u the jump on Affie and think u need to ride different because u don’t. Remember her knowledge has grown, she’s more capable but you are holding her and yourself back. Btw, you’re not going to die😅

Hannah, what about doing some work with the person Meg and Tina use to help with your confidence? You are a fantastic rider and capable horse person. Look at all you’ve accomplished with Affie this year. Also, remember you DO NOT need to do anything “for the vlog.” If you aren’t comfortable jumping her, don’t. You can do a vlog on groundwork or just grooming her and having a chat. Do you know the amount of non horsey vloggers who spend 90% of their videos talking and have massive followings? Hang in there and I hope you had a great Christmas ❤ Also….it is kind of a big ask for someone without years of experience to jump on their own. Many barns in America don’t even allow this - jumping is only with the trainer present in lessons or schooling sessions. This is just to say you’re asking a lot of yourself, so try not to be so hard on yourself. Remember Affie feeds off your nerves.

Hannah, I mean this with the very best wishes for you as a person, as a rider, and as a channel. Please consider trying to practice editing out all your fear based, negative, or neurotic comments the next time you make a riding video. Only use what remains. Watch the video and see what a better product you produce. Notice how many of your thoughts and words need to be cut and how different, more successful and positive the riding appears as a result. You could begin the process by editing your videos and over time begin to notice these thoughts as they occur and delete them from your mind little by little. A good therapist could help as would befriending confident riders to ride with who do not amplify or affirm your insecurities .

I think what people can’t see but you may feel is that she pulls through the reins so you feel you don’t have control as she doesn’t respond lightly to bit pressure (at least from experience riding my own boy when he first arrived it looks exactly like the ride he used to give me - the classic nose poker). They are very good at subtly making you give them more rein without you realising it and then when you try take a contact will throw in little head flicks etc as they are used to getting more ‘space’ in front. If you stand next to her side from the ground with reins in riding position and take a bit of contact (one hand at bit and other on reins over her neck) it would be interesting to see if she leans into it by poking her nose forward and gets heavy or quietly accepts it. If she pulls into it resist without pulling and then you have your answer that you need to work on. Easier at the halt and walk, harder obviously as speed increases. I spent a lot of time with my boy ensuring I wasn’t giving him more rein when he pulls when riding - so thumbs holding down on index fingers practicing that she isn’t sneakily taking more rein from you than what you have given her. You may find she thinks she needs ‘more space’ to go forward as that’s what she’s used to getting particularly through upward transitions but resist her pulling and back it up with your leg if needed so she realises she doesn’t need to take more from you. Practising a slow walk and rein back (but with your hands lifted so the bit acts on the corners of her mouth not the bars of her tongue) will be your friend - I suspect she will be very heavy to rein back initially 😊

It's hard to know what someone feels in any situation. Watching this, it looks absolutely fine ... to me. But you are obviously finding it incredibly stressful. ❤️ I'm watching this on the evening of Christmas Day, in hospital. I have multiple chronic illnesses (and haven't been able to ride for 15 years) and with that, my share of mental health struggles. You absolutely CAN ride, and you can slow her, sit up, get collected but bouncy. You have the practical tools and knowledge to jump well! But something in your brain and body are getting in your own way. Making noises of dread and saying "Oh my god I'm going to die" is going to just transmit all the wrong messages. I get she scares you, and yes she can be silly. But expecting her to be perfect when your brain is in chemical chaos is just not going to happen. See counselors, medications, psych professionals, do a lot of yoga, meditation etc... whatever you need to do to get your brain and mental health fitness so you able to react more appropriately in situations. There are certain learnt responses to stress (like in PTSD) that *can* be changed. Otherwise riding with your (incorrect!) lack of self belief is actually dangerous. I've watched Meg since early Bear days and feel like I know you a little. I'm choosing you out of all the youtubers out there to watch and keep me company on Christmas on my 5th day in hospital. This is all said from a very positive place. Look after yourself and be proud of how far you and Affie have come over the last year!! I hope your Christmas Day was really good (better than mine! lol). If you read ALL of this, thanks! It just made me sad to see you so doubting yourself. Be well. ❤❤

Its so easy for us to find an excuse for anything. Every emotion has a trigger but its literally impossible to remove all lifes triggers. Instead we need to instil coping mechanisms. The alpha is not the biggest and baddest, its the most grounded energy that set reliable boundaries. Until you can be that leader you cant work on establishing those coping mechanisms. I love how simon narrates his rides so jolly and calm. Perhaps concentrating on the way you are talking is the first step? Take it all with a bit more humour and sweetness. You are more than capable with her 💕

Absolutely no hate as I’ve been in the same position with my pony but I really think it’s worth getting to the bottom of your nerves and having someone more experienced present. Also watching other people ride her might help to show you that nothing is going to happen.

Oh Han, so much negativity. You really need to get your head in the right space, stop fussing over Affie and get to a place where you enjoy riding. I guess I'm old school, but I find all this 'tack' everyone uses so excessive, brushing boots, tendons boots, over reach boots, rugs for this, rugs for that, oh she's cold, oh she's warm!......too much! Affie is doing nothing wrong, so everytime you say, there's a van coming, there's a horse, I'm scared etc she is feeding off it. You are a good rider, you have the skills, you just need to work on your mental health. Sorry for the rant....it just makes me so sad to see a lovely, talented girl in this negative space. Have a great Christmas and come back in 2025 with a positive outlook.

You’re so RIGHT Sarah. I love what you’ve written. Affie’s a wonderful horse, I would’ve done anything for such a cracking little horse back in the day.

Wow! I don’t think I’ve ever seen you that scared on her! I think she was picking up on your terror!

As for riding other people's horses: I highly recommend a Rich lesson on Bear. She's not going to scare you doing dressage and she's a little dressage schoolmistress. I'm sure Meg would be on board with that! It would do you SO much good b/c you can feel what it is you're striving for!

I second this, but I think all riders need to ride a verity of horses at a variety of skill levels and honestly even other disciplines. But I’m also in favor of cross training.

I think there are some similarities between Bear and Aff too, so this could be really useful for Han.

Bears to sharp for Hannah she doesn't have the confidence and bear herself needs a confident rider

@sparkle.-buggg3610 Aff is pretty sharp and sassy, Hann would have no confidence issues. Besides I think I have heard where she's hacked on bear before, when Meg was traveling.

@@ArtsyFarm Yes, she's hacked her out. I think on the flat and with Rich instructing, they would be fine!
