Is SMSL RAW-MDA1 DAC the SECRET to GREAT Midrange Sound?
Many popular DAC/AMPs use identical ESS chips, the same XMOS USB interfaces, and similar switch-mode power supplies. The SMSL RAW-MDA1 seems identical on paper but is completely different in practice.

$29 "Audiophile" DAC... This CAN'T Be Good, Right? - SMSL PS100
In China, you can buy this headset for about $203 including postage, which completely kills other headsets of the same price.
Hi, you are a number one! Currently I have a Philips Fidelio X2HR and a fiio KA5. To experience the widest soundstage, an holographic experience "out of the head" what headphone+DAC/AMP you suggest below 1.000 EUR all together? So far ANANDA Stealth + Topping DX5 is what I have been told.
I'm glad to be your number one! I'll try to continue this trend by providing you with something that's going to blow your mind and (actually) beat what everyone else told you. On hifiman's website you can currently get Arya Non-Stealth (refurbished) for $499.00. You buy that. The non-stealth is the widest sounding arya ever. Only organic gets close, but at a much higher price, stealth is much more closed-in than both. Then you're left with a rather bright sounding headphone, but one that has a very good soundstage and around $500 for a DAC/AMP to tame it. You get an EF400 (open-box) for $309.00 (it's a warm sounding R2R DAC/AMP). Then, for the rest of your budget, you can upgrade it with a much better DAC-chip in the HiFiMan HYMALAYA Upgrade Program. I hope it was helpful, I'm sure you won't get anything remotely close to being better for your specifically at anything near this price. The Arya line is much more comfortable than Ananda too! Topping gear is not a good match for HiFiMan, because it sounds thin and overly bright.
Hi nerdy boy ! Why don't you look at the camera when you are describing your stuff? It is obvious Monosaudio sponsored you!!
I bought and tested these against the edition xs and 6xx. Also have tried the stax srx9000, he1000 unveiled, meze 109, etc recently. The Ananda stealth are one of the most sibilant sets I've ever listened to even with oratory1990's eq's. It's particularly bad when testing on onerepublic's counting stars. The fingersliding on the guitar frets, are like knives and needles to the ears. I did EQ it down quite a bit myself which helped a lot, but you lose some soundstaging and airiness
7:15 this one what changes can you expect you'll get slightly lower noise floor and lower Jitter which can contribute to a wider more accurate Sound Stage The jitter in the signal transported using Ethernet cables has NOTHING to do with the jitter in the audio playback. Every streamer has a data buffer there data coming from the Internet (or a local server) is stored at the speed as it arrive and readen from that buffer by a clock rate defined by the streamer. As long as the data arrives fast enough so this buffer never runs empty it does not matter if it is arriving in exact time - in reality the data is received much faster that needed for the playback and sometimes even in the wrong order.

I just replaced all my power cables in my hifi system last year. The difference was huge!! It was like getting all new components. This simple change makes listening to music so much more interesting!
Damn, sounds nice! What cables did you end up getting?
@@TheAudioStuff I got two types of Shunyata cables. I got the Alpha v2 XC to plug from the wall to my power conditioner. The other cable is the Alpha v2 NR that connects all my components from my power conditioner. These were a bit on the pricey side, but man they sound so good! I highly recommend them!
@@toddb1765 Oh, I see! What's the different between the XC and NR cables from Shunyata?
@@TheAudioStuff XC stands for "dynamic transient current delivery." This cord is best suited to power the power conditioner whereas the NR cable is best for cd players, turntables, pre amps, etc.
What power supply did you plug into the DAC? Nice review, thank you!
This DAC has an internal PSU, it's AC powered from the wall. You can't use a different one because of that. Thanks for the kind words!
you know that quality of digital data cannot be improved, right? there is no better quality bit value 1 and worst quality bit with value one.
Of course, it can't, otherwise the internet wouldn't work at all. Those cables carry power though and radiate noise - that's what matters.
@@TheAudioStuff So when you talked about USB cable(s), you meant not about the transferred music through it, but the noise it produce in your analog circuits?
@ when you plug in a usb cable to a dac, it outputs analog signal which can be affected by noise and other factors
It’s not like the files are going to magically change after transferring them with a different cable
@@TheAudioStuff It easy to misunderstand each other from such short messages, but lets see. USB cable does not carry analog signal. It carries power + digital stream of data. The DAC generates analog signal from the digital data you send through the USB cable. And the sent digital data through the USB cable is not effected by noise. It is either correct or corrupt. There is no better or worst digital data. Noise can only effect your analog signal generated by your DAC.
this is a satire, right?
try it for yourself and see
Nice video! I was thinking about selling my DX3 Pro+ and buying this MDA1, do you think it's worth it? I notice that the DX3 is very thin and lacks mids, I usually increase the mids by 1db when I'm using it
Thanks! I think that the RAW MDA1 is going to be PERFECT for you. While its technical aspects are probably a small upgrade from the DX3 PRO+, its tonality should align with your preferences. It's always best to try it out and see if you like it though.
The use of high-quality materials for the internal wiring shows a commitment to sound quality that I can respect.
Absolutely! The choice of materials definitely plays a crucial role in achieving that high-fidelity sound. We really wanted to emphasize that commitment to quality throughout the entire design process.
I’m interested in how well these speakers perform with different types of music. Do they handle rock and classical equally well?
Great question! These speakers are surprisingly versatile, and I've tested them across various genres. They do a fantastic job with both rock and classical, so you can enjoy the nuances in each type of music without missing a beat.
The midrange description really caught my attention. It sounds like these speakers would be great for vocal-heavy music.
Exactly! The midrange clarity is something I was really impressed with too. Whether you're listening to a soulful ballad or a dynamic rock track, the vocal reproduction is where these speakers truly shine.
I love that these speakers can be bi-wired. It gives so much flexibility for those who want to experiment with their setup.
Absolutely! Bi-wiring really opens up a lot of possibilities for tailoring the sound to your preferences. It’s a great feature for those who enjoy tweaking their audio setup.
I’m definitely looking into these speakers! They sound like they could be a great option for both casual listening and critical listening sessions.
Definitely!
Your mention of soundstage depth is intriguing. I often prefer speakers that create an immersive listening environment.
Thanks for that! A deep soundstage really can transform the listening experience, making you feel like you're right in the middle of the performance. Glad you found it interesting!
I’m definitely looking into these speakers! They sound like they could be a great option for both casual listening and critical listening sessions.
Great choice! They really shine in both casual and critical listening, making them a fantastic option for any audiophile or casual listener alike.
I’m intrigued by the dynamic driver design. It’s nice to see a company putting thought into materials for better sound quality.
I completely agree! The choice of materials can significantly impact sound reproduction, and it's great to see brands investing in that for a better audio experience.
Your description of the midrange as “chocolatey” is spot on! I love warm, rich vocals.
I’m glad you resonated with that description! There's something about a warm, chocolatey midrange that just elevates the listening experience, especially with vocals. It really brings out the emotion in the music, right?
It seems like these headphones are a great all-rounder. I’m considering them for both music and movies.
They really are versatile! Whether you’re diving into a movie or listening to your favorite album, they deliver a fantastic experience across the board.
I can see myself using these for long gaming sessions as well. Comfort is key during those marathon playtimes!
Exactly! Comfort is crucial for those extended gaming sessions, and these headphones are designed to keep you comfortable without sacrificing sound quality.
I wonder how they perform with different genres. Do they shine more with certain types of music?
They handle a wide range of genres beautifully! Whether it’s classical, rock, or electronic, you’ll find that they adapt well and bring out the best in each style.
The comfort level sounds incredible! I can’t stand headphones that make my ears sore after a few hours.
Totally understand that! These headphones are designed with long listening sessions in mind, so you can enjoy music or movies without discomfort.
Its crazy... a year later these are $269. An absolute steal
This pricing is INSANE
The fact that they come with a hard carrying case is a big plus for someone like me who travels a lot with gear.
I hear you! A hard case is a game changer for protection and portability. It makes it much easier to take your gear on the go without worries.
Real wood earcups? That’s definitely a premium touch! I love how they’re combining aesthetics with functionality.
Absolutely! Real wood not only looks stunning but also helps with acoustics. It’s great to see a focus on both design and sound quality.
It seems like these headphones are a great all-rounder. I’m considering them for both music and movies.
You’re spot on! They really excel in both areas, providing a rich audio experience no matter what you’re listening to or watching.
Soundstage and imaging are crucial for me, and your description of the RAW-MDA1’s performance sounds exactly what I'm looking for.
That's good! Sounds like you'll love dual mono chip designs, R2R DACs and tube gear - try all this if you haven't already ;)
I’ve always wondered why DACs sound so similar. Your insights into the SMSL RAW-MDA1 really shed some light on this topic.
I appreciate your feedback! DACs can often be subtle in their differences, but understanding the nuances can really enhance the listening experience.
I love the idea of having double digital connectors. It adds so much versatility for connecting different devices.
Exactly! Having multiple digital inputs really enhances the versatility of your setup, making it easy to switch between devices without hassle.
You mentioned they don’t get too hot during long listening sessions. That’s a major plus for summer months!
Definitely! Keeping cool during long listening sessions is a big plus, especially when you're enjoying your favorite tunes in warmer weather.
I can’t wait to hear more about how the SMSL RAW-MDA1 compares to some other popular models on the market.
I’m excited for you to hear that too! The comparisons will definitely highlight what makes the RAW-MDA1 stand out in the crowded DAC market.
I appreciate how you broke down the technical specifications. It's helpful for those of us not as knowledgeable about the inner workings.
I’m glad you found it helpful! Understanding the specs can really enhance the appreciation of what makes these headphones special.
The measurements you provided really show how impressive the RAW-MDA1 is. I’m definitely considering this for my setup.
Thanks! The RAW-MDA1 really does have some impressive specs that translate into great sound. I think it’ll fit perfectly into your setup and make a noticeable difference in your listening sessions.
The build quality looks solid! That metal enclosure gives it a premium feel that I really appreciate.
Thanks! The metal enclosure not only adds to the aesthetics but also contributes to the durability and overall performance. It's a well-thought-out design.
The semi-open design is fascinating; it must provide a nice balance of sound isolation and openness.
You got it! The semi-open design strikes a great balance, allowing for a natural sound while still providing some isolation from external noise.
The swivel design sounds perfect for a comfortable fit. I hate it when headphones clamp my head too tightly.
This one has fairly light clamp, it won't do that for you!
I was skeptical about the differences between DACs, but the RAW-MDA1 really changed my perspective on sound quality.
It’s awesome to hear that the RAW-MDA1 shifted your perspective! Many people underestimate how much of a difference a quality DAC can make. It really opens up the details in the music once you hear it.
Soundstage and imaging are crucial for me, and your description of the RAW-MDA1’s performance sounds exactly what I'm looking for.
Absolutely! The soundstage and imaging are key elements for a truly immersive experience. The RAW-MDA1 really excels in those areas, making it a fantastic choice for anyone looking to enhance their audio setup.
The build quality looks solid! That metal enclosure gives it a premium feel that I really appreciate.
Right on!

Huh? What do you mean?
Do you suggest them over Tanchjim Origin or more budget one like Meze Alba? İ am very confused right now can you help me to decide( i am mostly listening soundtracks, RnB jazz and alternative rock) i want to use it also for movies, gaming and
For a more budget-friendly option, the Tanchjim Origin provides great value with good sound and build quality. If you're looking for something even more affordable, the Meze Alba is a great choice for casual listening and watching movies. When making your decision, consider your budget and what features are most important to you. In my opinion, the Orchestra Lite is the best all-rounder in its price range. However, if you're also interested in gaming and prefer a different sound profile, the EM6L could be a suitable choice. You can find its review on my channel here: ua-cam.com/video/zCVXqanAMs0/v-deo.html.
@TheAudioStuff thanks man for responding and all of ur helps. We are lucky to have a great youtuber like you, i eventually decided to buy meze because of their price difference and comfort. For sound quality i am expecting to have better quality than my bose qc45 and other bluetooth devices.
I drive it with fiio k9 pro. Tried once with Topping. It was too flat😅
Fiio K9 Pro sounds like a great match! I'd not recommend those with topping, it's probably gonna be either too flat - as you mentioned, or too bright.
what amplifier does anyone recommend to get the best performance out of these?
If you want the absolute best, you're going to spend really big money - thousands of dollars. It probably is not the best idea for that headphone. Go for something mid-range.
What is the cheapest best way to get great sound stage dac amp combo on this bad boys?
I'd say atom stack is the cheapest, entry-level DAC & AMP to get you started. It won't get the most out of this headphone, but you'll get a feel of what it's capable of. It's gonna be a big upgrade from any built-in audio solution or even a dongle. A review of this stack is coming to my channel soon-ish - I already have it on hand, but lots of other videos have to be finished first before I can get to it.
Hai, pretty good review. However, the main question I wanted an answer to is still left in the cold. I had an Edition XS in the past, how much better is this headphone?
Hi! Sorry for not including an answer to this question in the video. I'd be glad to answer it though! The Arya Stealth is a very significant upgrade from the Edition XS. It improves mostly in those aspects: Resolution Sound Stage Imaging Bass impact / Dynamics Dryness (Arya Stealth doesn't sound as "dry" as Edition XS - it is my main problem with the Edition XS by the way) Comfort
I like audiophile power cables, they look good plug in better and dont kink. For all other cables, audiophiles should be making their own cables. Seriously, it should be a part of this hobby and too many dont bother AND spend huge amounts of money. Make your own!
I've experimented with DIY cables, that's a very very fun thing to do! Unfortunately, we can't do everything that big manufacturers with their advanced tools can. Nevertheless, for a budget set of cables it's going to be a great idea!
Hi, I have a question for you, The Audio Stuff. No matter how hard I try to find the differences or comparison between these 2, DO100 Pro vs. DO200 Pro, I just don't seem to find any comparisons out there. Then I ran into your videos. I hope my question finds you, and you will be able to help me choose which one to go with. Just a short explanation of my setup. Sony TV and a Genelec 8020 active studio monitor. I tried multiple DACs from 10 quid to 40 quid, but none of them worked for me. I was able to get sound out of the 10 quid cheapest version via optical cable, but I am unable to adjust the volume using my TV's remote. Have to be changed manually in the settings each and every time, which drives me crazy. Then I ran into this SMSL Do100 Pro. I believe I found the solution to my problem. I am quite sure that I will be able to adjust the volume using this DAC, so adjusting the volume manually in my TV settings will come to an end soon. My main question is, what is the main difference between these 2 DO100 Pro vs. DO200 Pro, and which one would you recommend to buy and why? I like when the sound quality is crisp and clear, but will I hear a significant difference between these 2? Thank you for your answer.
Hi there! Thanks for reaching out and for your interest in the SMSL DO100 Pro and DO200 Pro. I'm happy to help you make an informed decision. The DO200 PRO uses twelve Cirrus Logic CS43131 DAC chips. The DO100 uses 2x ES9038Q2M DAC chips. Those different chips have a different sound signature, that you might want to consider. Ultimately, the best way to determine the right DAC for you is to listen to them yourself. If possible, try to audition both models and compare their sound quality. However, based on your current setup and requirements, the DO100 Pro seems like the most suitable choice. The DO200 Pro is more expensive, and while it offers a bit better performance, you're not very likely to hear that. Your system is not very resolving at the moment to show all that. I'd say you'd be just fine with the DO100 PRO and a few more bucks in your wallet. They measure rather similarly too - I'd assume it's important to you, as you're running a pair of Genelec active speakers.
@@TheAudioStuff Hello there, Thank you for response. I think I will go with the 100pro after this converstation and I have the feeling I won't regret it. This will be a good entry level dac for me as I am looking to get a decent sound or something other than a cheap dac which offers no option for manually change the volume. Anywho, many thanks once again. Take care, bye now
Oho, I see you have the Sundara closed back up there. Most people seem to hate them, but after EQ I find them really really good. Even though ist closed back, how would you compare them to the Arya Organic?
They're just too mid forward - there are even mods by custom cans to take out some of it! The Arya Organic is HUGELY better at every single aspect haha
