valve events sound off for a 3 cylinder engine, when it's pulling slow it's as if there 3 beats & then a pause rather than a smooth 6 beats per revolution & some sound harder & some softer than others

We were on a day trip on a special train from Poole to Weymouth Harbour round about that year. The train met the ship Earl Harold to take us to Jersey. We were told that no passenger train has since ploughed through the town since that day. The train was late at the ship due to cars on the line - yes, you read it right, cars not cows.

As a guest house owner in Weymouth I would like to see the re-introduction of this tramway. It could be a unique tourist attraction that not many (if any) other seaside resorts could match. Weymouth needs regeneration and it something The Council should take onboard and address as there are too many shops closing. It will soon be a 'ghost town' if nothing is done. This tramway could just be the tipping point it needs to inject new life into Weymouth.

What a lovely video. I too was involved in the restoration of 80064. Used to come up from Plymouth one day a week whilst in final year at school, so would have been circa 1978. An elderly gent called Roy Gregory used to bring two or three of us up every week. I painted the inside of the left hand water tank. In those days I was so skinny that I could fit in the hole for the filler hatch. There used to be a dent nearly the length of the tank. In its working life it had collided with something which left a huge gouge down the side. It took MONTHS of filler, sanding, filler, sanding to get it right. Nice to see it again.

What happened to this part of the line? I knew that it terminates at Buckfastleigh but how come the track was lifted to/from Ashburton, was it taken up during BR days before the SDR could obtain it?

Hi there. Just found this film and what memories it brought back. I grew up in Buckfastleigh and my dad worked on 80064 until his death in 1977. He never got to see it run but my mum took us down to the station to see one of its first runs up and down the platform. It must of been the day shown in your film because I remember all of the locos out running together. I was about 10 at the time. I've seen 80064 rotting in a shed on the bluebell. She is still there as dar as I know with currently no plans for restoration. Very sad. Thanks for sharing this film.

As a boy I spent many hours in Sapperton Box. Checking my own photos I reckon the film was taken in June/July 1970 (Boxes closed on 5/10/70). One can see the partially completed Xover ground frame in the first shot and new relay boxes for the MAS at Brimscombe. Sapperton Box was rarely photographed so this material is so precious. Brimscombe looks so sad and bare of any activity in what was a large complex. The box was only retained for a farmers Xing. I cannot thank you enough for posting this.

I was brought up in Stroud and as kids we spent hours riding around on our bikes in the late 50s early 60s and remember the simple pleasures we enjoyed. One was watching the Brimscombe Banker chasing the coal trains to help them get up Sapperton Bank. Kids today have things we never even dreamt of and yet I cant help feeling that the kids today have lost something precious.

Great film. To date it is the only one i have seen of 80064. Helped with the restoration of this loco 1978/79. Was taken to Buckfastliegh by Roy Gregory on day release from school in Plymouth. I painted the inside of the water tanks on both sides on 80064. Seem to remember Roy trying to sort out a long dent on one of the tanks. The amount of filler and rubbing down we did was very time consuming. Note the signalbox being built at Buckfastliegh. Bet Nick Perring was involved with that.

Nice to see, I remember the SDR around this time. 80064 was moved to Buckfastleigh in 1973 and she returned to steam in 1981. In 1984, she was moved to the Bluebell Railway. (courtesy of the SDR web site). Keith
