Knife Making: Thick Knife from a Lawn Mower Blade
Переглядів 4474 роки тому
Here I make a thick knife from a lawn mower blade. I start by cutting the blank out of the lawn mower blade and using an angle grinder, belt sander, bench grinder, files, and sand papers I carve the knife to shape. To harden I heat up the blade until it is no longer magnetic and quench it in water, then I temper it at 200℃ in a toaster oven. Then I sand the surface to 200 grit to leave a matte ...

    Oh lord. This is beautiful but please, don't grind dry. Silica dust is terrible for your lungs. You can use a plastic tub under a dribbling faucet (as you don't want the dust going down the sink, long term it can damage the pipes. Usually it's safe to dump outside unless the rock contains toxic elements.) Or, use a bowl of water, at the very least. In addition grinding dry will wear your bits out way faster. Rocks you are carving will also be more prone to fracture due to heat stress. The only downside of carving wet is having to be mindful of keeping it away from the motor of electrical tools. But it is still necessary. Edit: Just thought of one more thing. Fine shop dust is flammable, even silica dust or fine metal shavings. If it accumulates it will become a fire hazard. Even regular sparks coming from a dremel motor could light the dust and cause a fire.

    Could you do s short vid on how you mark and carve it again but maybe just show one petal in real time. You know, how you get that amazing separation between levels. Also what kind of rock is that? I tried it using soapstone but it crumbles to easy. Easy as hell to sand thought. lol. Great work.

    Nice work! Have you though of investing a tumbler? In that case the rough and jagged surfaces would've been gone all you would need to do is shape out the heart. Since you'd be doing most of the carving by hand the tumble time would be only enough to round the stone.

    Different sandpaper’s are made from different types of abrasive so maybe the reason why the sander didn’t work well is bedside it wasn’t hard enough

    Please please please wear a respirator and work outside when you are creating rock dust. Silicosis is no joke, and you don't want it. Rock dust can stay suspended in the air for a while, and get disbursed around your home. Other folks in your home can be affected by it as well. I liked your project, BTW. Just please work safely. You need your lungs. :)

    Hello!! I have a huge question and for this... I need help!! I bought a dremel sometime ago... And its been good... But at the sametime annoying... Which is frustrating cause I can not enjoy the process... I do not know what I am doing wrong or if its the tool its self... Reason why I am taking the liberty to ask a few questions. Is there a reason why a bit will loosen up and move from the position it was needed? (Even when I tighten it up hard?) This is the main one. I use water to prevent the bits to over heat (that is good right?) I need help to identify the right bit for the right rock type... Cause I would see videos and for me I have the right bit... But then when Ive tried them out... It does not work. 😥 I would appreciate the input... Thank you.

      If your bit is moving you probably need a new pArt , I forget what it’s called , but when you remove the black piece , under it us a part that holds your bit. That can get worn and loose and will result in the bit moving . Water is definitely good , helps the bit cool down . And makes your bit last longer . Make sure you have a splash protector or cut off protector to prevent water getting in the motor . A drip is really beneficial . Don’t over do it . Water can cause electrical shock . Look for carbide . That is truly the best in my experiences.

    Get a shop vàc to suck up the blow by dust and a water drip system to wet the bit while working and wear a mask. It is a sure sined way to get a lung disease breathing the rock dust. Should not have all that dust on the woork top and your hands this is a garenteed way to die of a terrible lung disease.

  • @patrickrenschler5972
    @patrickrenschler5972 3 роки тому

    I saw you changed bits during the video but I think it was because you wanted a different shape bit. Did you ever have to change bits because they got worn down by the granite? Or do they typically last through several stones?

    • @notlocked4734
      @notlocked4734 3 роки тому

      The way I’m doing it here will wear the bits down quite fast, a bit should still last for a couple stones. It is better to keep them cool by having the stone in a water bath, it also helps to keep the dust down. If they are properly cooled they should last a long time.
